January 29, 2025- The Friends of Broward Health, led by Linda Haller, is an initiative through which local philanthropists and community leaders can support Broward Health for specific causes. Haller is also active in other nonprofits enhancing healthcare locally and nationally.

Cameron G. Duncan, Ph.D., Named Dean of FAU Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing
January 27, 2025 – Florida Atlantic University has named Cameron G. Duncan, Ph.D., DNP, APRN, FNP-C, PMHNP-BC, CNE, FAANP, as the new Holli Rockwell Trubinsky Eminent Dean of the Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing.
Duncan is the fourth dean in the college’s 45-year history and will take the helm on Jan. 27. Prior to joining FAU, he served as the interim dean of the Orvis School of Nursing at the University of Nevada, Reno, where he previously served as the director of the Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Program since 2017. In his new role at FAU, Duncan will work closely with faculty, staff, and local community partners to further enhance the college’s clinical, educational, and research initiatives. His extensive background in academic achievement, clinical practice, and scholarship, complement the college’s strengths in research and caring science.

Rhoden, a highly skilled fetal and pediatric cardiologist, has joined its esteemed medical team. Emma L. Ducca, Ph.D., Joins Baptist Health Miami Neuroscience Institute as a Neuropsychologist
January 28th, 2025 – Neuropsychologist Emma L. Ducca, Ph.D., has joined Baptist Health Miami Neuroscience Institute. She specializes in clinical neuropsychology and conducts evaluations with patients who have neurologic, psychiatric and other medical concerns. She has expertise in epilepsy, traumatic brain injuries and neurodegenerative disorders and is trained in cognitive behavioral therapy.
Dr. Ducca earned a master’s degree as well as a doctoral degree in clinical psychology at St. John’s University – Jamaica in New York. She completed her internship in clinical psychology with a concentration in neuropsychology at Long Island Jewish Medical Center-Zucker Hillside Hospital, Northwell Health in New York and a two-year, post-doctoral fellowship in neuropsychology at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine in Miami.

January 27, 2025 – Board-certified orthopedic surgeon Aldo M. Riesgo, M.D., has joined Baptist Health Orthopedic Care. He specializes in adult hip and knee reconstruction. His clinical interests include primary hip and knee joint replacements, periprosthetic fractures, total joint infections and complex revision total joint replacements. In addition to his clinical expertise, Dr. Riesgo is committed to training the next generation of surgeons to skillfully help patients with challenging issues.
Prior to joining Baptist Health, Dr. Riesgo was an orthopedic surgeon at Cleveland Clinic in Weston and served as director of the clinic’s adult hip and knee reconstruction fellowship.

Landmark Study Aims to Enable Paralyzed Patients to Use Their Own Thoughts to Control External Devices Through a Brain-Computer Interface
January, 27, 2025 – The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis and the Department of Neurological Surgery at the University of Miami (UM) Miller School of Medicine have been selected to become the second U.S.-based site for Neuralink’s PRIME Study, an investigational medical device clinical trial for Neuralink’s ground-breaking brain-computer interface.
The Neuralink PRIME (Precise Robotically Implanted Brain-Computer Interface) Study is an early feasibility study to assess the safety and functionality of Neuralink’s N1 Implant, an intracortical brain-computer interface (BCI) implant that establishes a wireless, digital link between the brain and computers. This link is designed to help restore autonomy to people with paralysis by enabling them to control external devices with their thoughts, without the need for wires or physical movement. The study will also evaluate Neuralink’s R1 Robot, a surgical robot that precisely and rapidly places the N1 Implant’s ultra-fine electrode threads within microns of targeted neurons.

Hussman Institute Opens Cutting-Edge Biorepository, Clinical Research Lab
Worldwide impact includes more samples for research studies, increased scientific collaboration.
January 27, 2025 – The John P. Hussman Institute for Human Genomics at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine now has a new, state-of-the-art, 6,500-square-foot biorepository that greatly increases the center’s capacity to store millions of research samples and expand its laboratory capabilities. The site officially opened at a Jan. 24 event with faculty and donors, including John P. Hussman, Ph.D., M.S.Ed., whose generous gift of $20 million named the institute in 2009.

The advanced biorepository reinforces the university’s commitment to research and team science by linking its physicians and scientists to colleagues around the globe and attracting business partners looking to collaborate and securely house their samples in the automated, temperature-controlled facility. Funded by a $7.6 million grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Miller School’s biorepository is one of only a handful of academic institutions nationwide that are employing this type of biobanking automation and technology in a facility of such size and capacity.

SMH Board Approves $450M, Sumter Site for North Port’s First Hospital
January 28, 2025 – The Sarasota County Public Hospital Board approved a $450 million plan today to build North Port’s first hospital on North Sumter Boulevard in North Port.
The 6-story, 100-bed hospital will be built on an undeveloped 32-acre parcel Sarasota Memorial Health Care System owns in the 4900 block of North Sumter Boulevard near I-75. Sarasota Memorial Hospital-North Port will be the health system’s third acute-care hospital and fulfills a longstanding request from the City of North Port for a hospital of its own. With more than 95,000 residents, North Port is the largest city in Sarasota County, both in land mass and population, and one of the fastest growing in the nation.

The 22nd Surgery of the Foregut Symposium/10th Congress of the International Society for Fluorescence Guided Surgery is taking place at the Margaritaville Resort in Hollywood, Florida, on March 17-19, 2025. On March 17, in conjunction with the Florida/Puerto Rico/Caribbean Chapter of ASMBS, the course will present a full-day seminar on prevention, medical and surgical management of obesity, Metabolic Surgery: Beyond Weight Loss. On March 18, in conjunction with ISFGS, we will review new technology and techniques in surgery of the foregut and fluorescence guided surgery. On March 19, we will present interesting cases and abstracts submitted to the conference.
As in previous years, a “first-class” group of world-renowned surgeons, gastroenterologists and oncologists has been invited to share their expertise and updates on the most recent technological and therapeutic advances in this steadily evolving field. Since 1999, this course has become one of the most prestigious forums in the field of foregut surgery with attendees and faculty travelling from around the globe.
