NICKLAUS CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL FORMS CLINIC TO ASSIST PATIENTS WITH UNDIAGNOSED CONDITIONS
April 11, 2023 – Nicklaus Children’s Hospital this month has launched a new clinic dedicated to assisting families seeking answers for a child with a rare or undiagnosed disease. The Undiagnosed Diseases Clinic, which occurs monthly, offers the latest genetic testing technologies for eligible patients.
“For some families of children with rare diseases, the search for a diagnosis can be a prolonged and often frustrating experience,” said Dr. Parul Jayakar, Director of Clinical Genetics and Metabolism. “These families may have already visited multiple specialists and undergone a variety of tests in hopes of finding answers. The Undiagnosed Diseases Clinic is dedicated to helping such families identify the genetic condition affecting their child in hopes it leads to diagnosis and treatment.”
The clinic has access to new genetic testing technologies, including whole genome sequencing and metabolomics. These new technologies make possible the detection of genetic alterations that are not typically identified by more common clinical genetic tests.
Candidates for the clinic usually have two or more of the following characteristics.
Inborn anomalies (differences) of the heart, kidneys, brain, hands, feet or any other parts of the body. A lab test that suggests a genetic disease, such as an abnormal newborn screen, or suggesting the body is having trouble processing certain foods or substances.
Abnormal response to standard therapy, or unusual presentations of certain medical conditions.
Low muscle tone (hypotonia).
Seizure disorders that do not respond to medication or require multiple medications. Undiagnosed neurodevelopmental conditions, including difficulties with language and speech, motor skills, behavior, memory, learning or other neurological functions.
Abnormal growth parameters, including height, weight or head size (too big, too small for their age and gender). Have visited a genetic specialist and undergone standard clinical genetic tests, without a diagnosis.
Families who wish to have their child considered for the clinic should schedule an appointment with a Nicklaus Children’s Pediatric Specialists genetics provider by calling 786-624-4741.

Sal Italiano LOCAL ROCKER GETS BACK ON BEAT AT BROWARD HEALTH
April 12, 2023- Out of the blue one night, 68-year-old heavy metal bass guitarist went into cardiac arrest after going to bed in his Deerfield Beach home.
His wife Christine frantically performed CPR on him with the guidance of a 911 phone operator until paramedics arrived.
A cardiac catheterization procedure revealed he had three blocked arteries and needed a coronary artery bypass graft (CABG). This surgery involves taking healthy blood vessels from a patient’s legs or chest to create blood flow around a blocked artery in the heart.
Italiano was in critical condition and being kept in an induced coma for several days so he could tolerate his breathing tube. However, his cardiothoracic surgeon, Kenneth Herskowitz, MD, needed confirmation that his brain was still functioning.
The hospital staff periodically eased his sedation to check his condition and after four days he was awake and neurologically stable and able to have his open-heart surgery. After the surgery, Italiano had no memory of the events that landed him in the hospital and was experiencing no pain; he could not believe what had happened.
“I don’t remember the first part of my journey, but from the point that I do remember, the care I received at Broward Health Medical Center was absolutely stellar,” Italiano said. “The doctors, nurses, everyone on staff were wonderful. I have never had such a caring experience.”

CLEVELAND CLINIC LOU RUVO CENTER FOR BRAIN HEALTH JOINS MICHAEL J. FOX FOUNDATION’S EXPANSION OF PARKINSON’S PROGRESSION MARKERS INITIATIVE (PPMI) The center is now recruiting for the global observational clinical study aimed at detecting biomarkers of Parkinson’s disease progression
April 11, 2023 – Las Vegas: Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health is participating in the expansion of the Parkinson’s Progression Markers Initiative (PPMI) study with The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research (MJFF).
The landmark observational study is composed of researchers, funders, and study participants working toward the goal of identifying progression biomarkers – or disease indicators – to improve Parkinson’s disease therapeutics, prevention and prognosis. Joining Cleveland Clinic’s main campus in Ohio as part of the global PPMI network, the Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health in Las Vegas is the first and only study site in Nevada.
“Disease-modifying therapies that can actually slow the progression of Parkinson’s disease are desperately needed, and the PPMI study is an important step in helping us achieve this goal. By identifying indicators of disease progression, we’ll be able to better predict disability and, ultimately, slow or prevent it,” said Zoltan Mari, M.D., FAAN, director of the Parkinson’s and Movement Disorders Program at the Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health and the PPMI site principal investigator. “To be selected as a study site is a milestone achievement not only for our center, but for the broader Parkinson’s disease and movement disorders community in Nevada.”

April 11, 2023 – Tampa General Hospital today announced reverifications of the TGH Wallace Trauma Center as a Level I Trauma Center by the American College of Surgeons (ACS) for both pediatric and adult care. The Adult Trauma Center and the Pediatric Trauma Center are each reverified as stand-alone programs extending through 2026.
“Tampa General is home to the only Level I Trauma Center in West Central Florida,” said Dr. Thomas Joseph Herron, a critical care specialist and trauma surgeon at Tampa General and assistant professor in the Division of Trauma & Acute Care Surgery in the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine. “Achieving reverifications for adult and pediatric care is a collaborative effort and, each day, our incredible trauma team members go above and beyond to care for critically injured patients and their families with the highest level of skill, compassion and commitment.” Herron served as the director of Regional Trauma at Tampa General during the reverification process.
Tampa General’s Level I trauma centers for adults and children are the first in Florida to achieve verification from the ACS for the quality of their trauma care. ACS and its review team of nationally recognized experts in trauma care performed an in-depth, on-site assessment of every aspect of Tampa General’s trauma program.

CMS PROPOSES POLICIES TO IMPROVE PATIENT SAFETY AND PROMOTE HEALTH EQUITY Proposed Rule Would Reward Hospitals that Deliver High-Quality Care to Underserved Populations
On April 10, 2023 , the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) issued a proposed rule for inpatient and long-term care hospitals that builds on the Biden-Harris Administration’s key priorities to advance health equity and support underserved communities. As required by statute, the fiscal year (FY) 2024 inpatient prospective payment system (IPPS) and long-term care hospital prospective payment system (LTCH PPS) rule updates Medicare payments and policies for hospitals. The rule would also adopt hospital quality measures to foster safety, equity, and reduce preventable harm in the hospital setting. CMS is proposing to recognize homelessness as an indicator of increased resource utilization in the acute inpatient hospital setting, which may result in higher payment for certain hospital stays. This action aligns with the Administration’s goal of providing support to historically underserved and under-resourced communities.
“CMS is helping to build a resilient health care system that promotes good outcomes, patient safety, equity, and accessibility for everyone,” said CMS Administrator Chiquita Brooks-LaSure. “This proposed rule reflects our person-centric approach to better measure health care quality and safety in hospitals to reduce preventable harm and our commitment to ensure that people with Medicare in rural and underserved areas have improved access to high-quality health care.”

PRAGMATICA-LUNG STUDY, A STREAMLINED MODEL FOR FUTURE CANCER CLINICAL TRIALS, BEGINS ENROLLING PATIENTS
April 12, 2023 – The National Cancer Institute, part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), has helped launch a phase 3 randomized clinical trial (NCT05633602) of a two-drug combination to treat patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Called the Pragmatica-Lung Study (or S2302), this is one of the first NCI-supported clinical trials to use a trial design that removes many of the barriers that prevent people from joining clinical trials. This “pragmatic” approach aims to increase accessibility to clinical trials.
The study is part of a broader effort by NIH and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to modernize clinical trials. Pragmatic clinical trials have fewer and simpler eligibility criteria than conventional trials, while still ensuring the safety of patients. The hope is that this type of simplified trial can be less burdensome to patients and investigators, accrue study participants faster, be more representative of the real-world patient population, and serve as a model for future cancer clinical trials.
“This study is designed to eliminate potential barriers to enrollment and provides a model for increasing diversity and enrollment in clinical trials,” said Monica M. Bertagnolli, M.D., director of NCI. “Pragmatica-Lung, with its critical public and private partnerships, reflects the innovative approaches NCI is taking to achieve the Cancer Moonshot℠ goals, including reducing the cancer death rate by 50% within the next 25 years.”

PREDICTIVE ANALYTICS GIVES HOSPICES A LENS INTO QUALITY, COMPLIANCE April 12, 2023 – Hospices are leveraging predictive analytics to get a clearer picture of their performance amid regulatory pressures.
Hospices have relied on data to enhances their ability to assess the quality and quantity of bedside care delivered during a patients’ final days.
This includes two key quality measures: Hospice Visits in the Last Days of Life (HVLDL) and the Hospice Care Index (HCI).
The U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) designed the HCI tool to paint a picture of care processes that occur between a patient’s admission and discharge. Whereas the HVLDL metric specifically assesses the last three days of life, as well as any respite, continuous home and inpatient care services.
Using data gathered from predictive analytics systems can give hospices an advantage when it comes to performance on these measures, particularly during the last week of life, according to Charlotte Mather, vice president of nursing operations at Dallas-based AccentCare. This patient data can be especially important when it comes to compliance around the HVLDL metric provided, she said.
“Predictive analytics have been a game changer for helping us deliver excellent care at the right time when the patient needs us most,” Mather told Hospice News. “It allows us some insight to deliver quality care and outcomes and gives us a lens into how we can do that in real time so that we’re getting to the bedside when they need us most. That helps with the HVLDL metric and the last three days of life, and also impacts our quality scores, because we’re building that relationship with them all throughout their journey and ramping up intensity as we get to those final days for the patient and the family.”
AccentCare is a portfolio company of the private equity firm Advent International that provides hospice, palliative care, personal care, non-medical services, home health, care management and high-acuity home care. The company operates more than 250 locations in 30 states and in the District of Columbia, caring for roughly 210,000 patients and families annually.
