HCA Florida JFK Hospital is Nationally Recognized for its Commitment to Providing High-Quality Stroke Care
July 14, 2025 – HCA Florida JFK Hospital has received the American Heart Association’s Get With The Guidelines® – Stroke Gold Plus quality achievement award for its commitment to ensuring stroke patients receive the most appropriate treatment according to nationally recognized, research-based guidelines, ultimately leading to more lives saved and reduced disability.
Stroke is the No. 5 cause of death and a leading cause of disability in the U.S. A stroke occurs when a blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrients to the brain is either blocked by a clot or bursts. When that happens, part of the brain cannot get the blood and oxygen it needs, so brain cells die. Early stroke detection and treatment are key to improving survival, minimizing disability and accelerating recovery times.
Get With The Guidelines puts the expertise of the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association to work for hospitals nationwide, helping ensure patient care is aligned with the latest research- and evidence-based guidelines. Get With The Guidelines – Stroke is an in-hospital program for improving stroke care by promoting consistent adherence to these guidelines, which can minimize the long-term effects of a stroke and even prevent death.
“HCA Florida JFK Hospital is committed to improving patient care by adhering to the latest treatment guidelines,” said Ken West, Chief Executive Officer. “Get With The Guidelines makes it easier for our teams to put proven knowledge into practice every day, which studies show can help patients recover better. The end goal is to ensure more people in Palm Beach County can experience longer, healthier lives.”

New Program Strengthens Emergency Care Through Baptist Health and Fire-rescue Partnerships
July 16, 2025 – Florida Atlantic University’s Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine has received initial accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education for its sixth university-sponsored fellowship. The FAU Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Fellowship will be based at Boca Raton Regional Hospital, part of Baptist Health, as a member of the FAU College of Medicine Graduate Medical Education (GME) Consortium.
In addition to the FAU EMS Fellowship hospital partners, FAU has partnered with local emergency medical services and fire rescue agencies to provide fellows with varied experiences across multiple emergency medical service systems. Additional municipal fire rescue partnerships are expected to be finalized in the coming months, broadening the scope and reach of the fellowship’s prehospital training.
“Florida Atlantic University’s residency and fellowship training opportunities are not only expanding in number, but also in their ability to directly impact the health and well-being of our communities,” said Lewis S. Nelson, M.D., dean and chief of health affairs of the Schmidt College of Medicine. “The new EMS Fellowship brings a vital layer of expertise to our training programs and underscores our commitment to producing highly skilled physicians who are equipped to lead in any clinical setting – whether in the hospital or out in the field.”

UM: A Florida First: Breakthrough Treatment Gives Young Man New Life After Sickle Cell Disease
For 21-year-old Javarian Weatherspoon, life without pain feels like a miracle.
July 15, 2025 – After growing up with sickle cell disease, he became the first person in South Florida to receive a groundbreaking gene therapy, one that offers hope for a cure.
The treatment, Beam-101, is a new type of gene therapy from Beam Therapeutics that genetically modifies a patient’s own blood cells through base editing. Unlike other types of gene therapies that cut or break a DNA strand, base editing is more precise and can correct or make edits to genes.
The genes of patients with sickle cell can be altered so they produce a fetal form of hemoglobin in red blood cells that don’t change shape. This decreases or even eliminates symptoms of the disease. The modified cells are then transfused back into the patients, similar to a bone marrow transplant procedure.
After receiving his genetically modified cells, Weatherspoon is back home and pain-free.
“I feel good,” Weatherspoon said. “My life is a little easier right now because I am doing everything I was doing before, but I was in pain every day. But now I’m not in pain.”

Scientists Develop High-Performance MRI Scanner in Effort to Define Microscopic Brain Structures
Next-generation system noninvasively images tiny nerve structures disrupted in brain disorders.
July 16, 2025 – A scientific team supported in part by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has developed a new, ultra-high-resolution brain imaging system that can reconstruct microscopic brain structures that are disrupted in neurological and neuropsychiatric brain disorders. The new system is a significant advance over conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanners that cannot visualize these tiny but clinically important structures.
The system, called the Connectome 2.0 human MRI scanner, overcomes a significant hurdle for neuroscientists: being able to bridge different brain regions and probe tiny structures necessary to define the “connectome,” the complex matrix of structural connections between nodes in the nervous system, and to do it noninvasively in living humans.
