Health Choice Network Becomes First Health Center Controlled Network to Earn the KLAS Arch Collaborative Pinnacle Award for Physician EHR Experience
Miami, FL – August 11, 2026 – Health Choice Network (HCN) has been recognized with the 2026 KLAS Arch Collaborative Pinnacle Award for Physician EHR Experience, becoming the first Health Center Controlled Network (HCCN) in the nation to receive this prestigious distinction.

August 12, 2026 – Great Place To Work® and PEOPLE magazine have named Baptist Health South Florida as one of the 2026 PEOPLE® Companies that Care. Steven Vassil, D.O., Joins Baptist Health Primary Care as a Family Medicine Physician
August 12, 2026 – Board-certified family medicine physician Steven Vassil, D.O., has joined Baptist Health Primary Care. He provides comprehensive primary care for patients of all ages, with professional interests in preventive medicine, lifestyle optimization, chronic disease management and building long-term relationships through evidence-based outpatient care.

Muma Children’s Hospital Receives Recognition for Emergency Center Excellence
The Emergency Nurses Association announced Muma Children’s Hospital as a Lantern Award recipient.
August 11, 2026 – Muma Children’s Hospital at Tampa General Hospital (TGH) received the 2026 Emergency Nurses Association (ENA) Lantern Award, a distinction recognizing emergency departments that demonstrate exceptional and innovative performance in leadership, practice, education, advocacy and research. The ENA Lantern Award serves as a symbol of an emergency center’s commitment to quality, safety, evidence-based practice, innovation and a healthy work environment. This marks the first time Muma Children’s Hospital has received the award, making it the only children’s hospital and academic medical center on Florida’s West Coast and one of only eight nationwide to earn the honor.

Motorcycle Crash Survivor Reunites with EMS and HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital Caregivers Who Helped Save His Life
August 11, 2026 – Eight months after a devastating motorcycle accident left his future uncertain, Victor Lopez returned to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital today for an emotional reunion with the caregivers and first responders who helped save his life.
Lopez was transported to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital following the December accident. For weeks, his family faced uncertainty about what his recovery would look like. His girlfriend, Stefany, was pregnant at the time, and their daughter, Juliet, was born in January while Lopez was still hospitalized.
After nearly three months of treatment and recovery, Lopez was able to return home to his family.

As Skin Cancer Cases Grow More Complex, Early Specialist Alignment Is Critical
Florida’s year-round sun exposure contributes to one of the highest rates of skin cancer, particularly melanoma, in the country. Today, physicians are seeing more complex cases, including patients with advanced disease or multiple risk factors. As treatment options continue to grow, deciding when to operate, when to start chemotherapy or immunotherapy, and how to sequence treatment has become equally complex. Skin cancer treatment is no longer routine; it is evolving toward a more integrated, multidisciplinary model that is reshaping how and when specialists collaborate.
Skin cancer treatment is no longer a simple progression from diagnosis to surgery to recovery. Today’s treatment pathways often require early decisions about surgical approach, lymph node evaluation and the timing of systemic therapies, such as immunotherapy. In some cases, systemic therapy may be initiated before surgery, further underscoring the importance of early coordination. For more advanced or high-risk presentations, delayed alignment between specialties can limit treatment options and affect outcomes.

FSU COLLEGE OF MEDICINE AWARDED $19 MILLION IN FEDERAL GRANTS TO STRENGTHEN HEALTHCARE IN RURAL FLORIDA
August 12, 2026 – Florida State University has been awarded more than $19 million in grants through the Rural Health Transformation Program to launch six new College of Medicine projects and provide resources to improve the quality of life of individuals and communities throughout the state.
The five-year, $50 billion Rural Health Transformation Program, administered through the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, was authorized by the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, signed into law in July 2025. The program is designed to help states transform and update healthcare delivery by improving access, quality and outcomes, thereby strengthening rural communities.
Florida received nearly $210 million this year and, through the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA), awarded more than $180 million to fund proposals across the state.

Innovative knee implant system helps Central Florida nurse get back on her feet
Oviedo Medical Center, part of HCA Florida Healthcare, is announcing a new procedure that can help certain patients with chronic knee pain avoid or delay total joint replacement.
August 12, 2026- Erika Christensen, an operating room nurse herself, is the hospital’s first recipient of an innovative medical device called the Medial Implantable Shock Absorber Knee System. Erika had lived with constant knee pain due to osteoarthritis and a torn meniscus, even after undergoing a partial meniscectomy and arthroscopic surgery. Erika’s remaining options were a total knee replacement, or this newer alternative – the surgical implantation of a small device that acts like a shock absorber to reduce pressure on the damaged knee.
“At Erika’s young age and in an occupation that keeps her on her feet, the limitations of a total joint replacement would have been challenging,” said Oviedo Medical Center orthopedic surgeon Dr. Benjamin Thomasson. “We are grateful that the medial implantable shock absorber was an option for her. It has allowed her to return to work and life without restrictions.”

Lee Health: Free Autism Screening for Young Children
August 3, 2026 — Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida offers free monthly autism spectrum disorder screenings for toddlers 18 months to five years of age.
The next screenings will be held on Aug. 12 and Aug. 14 from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the Pediatric Specialist Office, 15901 Bass Road, Suite 102, Fort Myers.
It is estimated that one in every 31 children is diagnosed with some form of Autism Spectrum Disorder, making it more common than childhood cancer, juvenile diabetes and pediatric AIDS combined.
