A Historic 15-Year Streak: Memorial Reduces Tax Rate Again While Expanding Care

September 25, 2025 – In a continued demonstration of strong fiscal responsibility and commitment to the community, the South Broward Hospital District Board of Commissioners has unanimously approved a new millage rate of 0.0805, the lowest in the district’s recorded history. This marks the 15th consecutive year the rate has been reduced.

“Reducing the millage rate reflects our commitment to the community,” said Elizabeth Justen, chair of the South Broward Hospital District Board of Commissioners. “Thanks to Memorial’s strong financial position, we are able to ease the burden on taxpayers while continuing to deliver the exceptional care Memorial is known for.”

Despite ongoing challenges across the healthcare industry and rising operational costs, Memorial Healthcare System’s exceptional financial management has made this historic reduction possible. The newly approved rate represents nearly a 7.4% decrease from last year’s rate of 0.0869.

“This milestone is a testament to our Board, disciplined management and the dedication of our entire Memorial team,” said Shane Strum, Interim CEO of Memorial Healthcare System. “We’re delivering world-class care, expanding access, all while continuing to focus on innovation, efficiency and putting patients first.”

Florida Blue has Taken Memorial Healthcare System Out of its Provider Network: Here’s What You Should Know

BY: Holly L. Neville, MD

October 2, 2025- As a physician and surgeon at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, I often see kids and families in crisis. Regardless of severity, having an ill child, or one who may need surgery or hospital admission, is incredibly stressful for the entire family. This is especially evident at a facility like Joe DiMaggio where we provide complex medical care to the sickest children in the community. Our focus is always on minimizing suffering and getting kids back to good health, school, and the activities they enjoy, and our record of quality, safety, and outcomes shows we do it extremely well.

Today, a new kind of pain is impacting patients and families at the children’s hospital and throughout Memorial Healthcare System that’s beyond a doctor’s clinical abilities to remedy. It’s the anxiety and dread that comes with having the doctors you know and trust no longer available for your family’s care, the result of Florida Blue’s decision to remove Memorial’s in-network status from the health insurance it provides, and it’s something your friends, neighbors, or maybe even your own family is experiencing right now.

REAL CONSEQUENCES

The choice by Florida Blue places patients at risk of higher costs, disrupted care, and leave families facing an impossible decision: either self-pay the increased costs to stay with the providers that know them best, or start over, often in the middle of a treatment regimen, with a new medical team in a different healthcare system that may require significant travel to access a lesser level of care. All because Florida Blue refuses to provide market-based reimbursement for the services we deliver, an action that prioritizes profits over patients and removes the easy access to care our community depends on.

Good Samaritan Medical Center Offers Advanced Treatment for Radiation Fibrosis

October 2, 2025 – Good Samaritan Medical Center now offers advanced treatment for radiation fibrosis, a serious long-term complication of cancer therapy that can greatly impact a patient’s quality of life.

Radiation therapy is an effective treatment for many cancers, but it can sometimes cause the body’s tissue to become scarred, stiff, and less functional over time, a condition known as radiation fibrosis. For patients treated in the head and neck area, this can mean difficulty with swallowing, eating or even opening the jaw.

“Radiation fibrosis is a challenging condition that can affect mobility, comfort, and everyday life for cancer survivors,” said Dr. Anastasia Quimby, head and neck oncology and microvascular reconstruction surgeon at Good Samaritan Medical Center. “At Good Samaritan, we’re using innovative approaches such as NanoFat Therapy to actively reverse tissue damage, restore function, and improve long-term outcomes for our patients.”

Nominations open for 2025 Lifesaver Award

Award to celebrate local hero who saved a life with CPR

Oct. 2, 2025 – Three beachgoers performed CPR this year on a man who collapsed on Peanut Island. A mom saved her then-six-year-old son’s life when a baseball stopped his heart in West Palm Beach last year. Palm Beach, Martin and St. Lucie counties are filled with heroes who jump from bystander to lifesaver in cardiac emergencies. Nominations are open now for the 2025 Lifesaver Award to celebrate one of those local heroes.

“CPR can save a life, and we know that more than half of U.S. adults don’t feel confident in their ability to perform it in an emergency,” said Stacey Comerford, executive director of the American Heart Association Palm Beach County. “Sharing stories of local lifesavers through this award, along with offering CPR demos at workplaces and at the Heart Walk, are a few ways that we can help everyone build that confidence.”
