NEW DEAN OF UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI SCHOOL OF NURSING AND HEALTH STUDIES NAMED
Hudson Santos is an internationally renowned nurse investigator and educator who studies the impact of the social determinants of health on mothers and their children and has significantly increased the school’s research footprint. CORAL GABLES, Fla. – May 16, 2024 — Amid a setting of sutures and stethoscopes, bandages and blood pressure cuffs, medical successes and sometimes setbacks, Hudson Santos found his calling at the tender age of 9: nursing.
His mother, unable at times to arrange childcare for her young son, would sometimes bring him along to the hospital in northeastern Brazil where she cared for patients on her rounds as a licensed practical nurse. “Her professionalism was imprinted on me at a very early stage of my life,” Santos recalled. “She inspired me, and nursing became our shared passion.”
So he followed in his mother’s footsteps, becoming a nurse and caring for marginalized groups at clinics in Brazil and in the United States before conducting nursing-related education and research as an internationally renowned academician.

FLORIDA BLUE MEDICARE ACHIEVES HEALTH PLAN ACCREDITATION FROM THE NATIONAL COMMITTEE FOR QUALITY ASSURANCE (NCQA)
May 17, 2024 – Florida Blue Medicare has received renewed Health Plan Accreditation from the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) for its BlueMedicare HMO plan. Accreditation shows that health plans are committed to providing outstanding quality care and service to members.
NCQA is a private, nonprofit organization dedicated to improving health care quality. Considered the gold standard in the health care industry, NCQA recognizes health care companies that lead the market in demonstrating evidence-based standards and procedures.
“NCQA Health Plan Accreditation demonstrates that we are adhering to the highest standards and doing the right things to make sure our members receive the service and high-quality care they deserve,” said Camille Harrison, executive vice president of Medicare and chief innovation and experience officer at Florida Blue and GuideWell. “We also received a 100% score on our Accreditation.”
NCQA is the only program in the industry that bases its Accreditation on clinical performance and the experience of health care consumers. Health plans are evaluated on a variety of measures, such as quality management and improvement, network management, population health management and more. The Accreditation process lets health plans know what they are doing right and where they should focus their improvement efforts, particularly in areas most important to health care consumers, such as access to care, care coordination, and availability of health and wellness resources.

BIOHYBRID ROBOTIC HAND WILL HELP UNRAVEL COMPLEX SENSATION OF TOUCH
FAU Engineering Study Will Boost the Science of Neuro-prosthetics and Refine Control of Artificial Hands
BOCA RATON, Fla. May 15, 2024 – Brain-machine interfaces are devices that enable direct communication between a brain’s electrical activity and an external device such as a computer or a robotic limb that allows people to control machines using their thoughts.
Although this technology is still largely experimental, it holds great promise for people with a spinal cord injury or an amputation. Through electrophysiological signals transmitted between the brain’s neurons and the external source, turning thoughts into actions could help them regain control and sensation of their limbs.
However, restoring motor control and sensation from an assistive device in a natural way remains a scientific “holy grail” due to the complexity of the problem such as fully understanding and restoring the myriad of distinctly different sensations of touch for object friction, moisture, temperature, pain, among others.

NCH BONITA EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT VOTED BEST IN THE NATION FOR OVERALL QUALITY OF CARE
May 16, 2024 — NCH Bonita Emergency Department proudly announces its latest accolade: being voted the best in the nation for overall quality of care by PRC, a leading national vendor specializing in measuring HCAHPS (Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems) surveys for the second year in a row.
PRC, one of America’s largest vendors for administering HCAHPS, partners with organizations to support their efforts in improving healthcare for all by becoming better places for patients to be treated.
HCAHPS (pronounced “H-caps”) is the first national, standardized, publicly reported survey of patients’ perspectives for care received at a healthcare facility or hospital. It is a survey instrument for measuring patients’ perceptions of their care experience. While many healthcare facilities have collected information on patient satisfaction for their own internal use, until HCAHPS there was no national standard for collecting and publicly reporting information about patient experience of care that allowed valid comparisons to be made across healthcare facilities locally, regionally, and nationally.

MEDICARE TRUSTEES WARN OF PAYMENT ISSUE’S IMPACT ON ACCESS TO CARE
MAY 6, 2024 – CHICAGO – Echoing warnings from the American Medical Association (AMA), Medicare trustees warned today that the physician payment system has failed to keep up with the cost of practicing medicine and that failure could hinder seniors’ access to health care.
“This report continues the drumbeat of recommendations that all point out that the payment system is failing patients and physicians. When physicians face a set of facts, we respond to improve the situation. It would be political malpractice for Congress to sit on its hands and not respond to this report,” said AMA President Jesse M. Ehrenfeld, M.D., MPH.
In the Medicare Trustees Report (PDF) released today, the trustees warned that the program faces “challenges,” notably that physician payments are not based on underlying economic conditions—such as inflation—and are not expected to keep pace with the cost of practicing medicine. The trustees warned of the gap created between rising costs and physician payments, noting that the “quality of health care received by Medicare beneficiaries would, under current law, fall over time compared to that received by those with private health insurance.”

ADVERSE SOCIAL DETERMINANTS OF HEALTH LINKED TO TREATMENT-RESISTANT HYPERTENSION IN BLACK AMERICANS
NIH-funded study suggests addressing these factors could reduce health disparities.
May 16, 2024 – People were more likely to develop a type of treatment-resistant hypertension when they experienced adverse effects of economic and social conditions that influence individual and group differences in health status, known as social determinants of health. Additionally, this risk was higher among Black American adults than white American adults, according to a study funded by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), part of the National Institutes of Health.
Factors linked to this increased risk included having less than a high school education; a household income less than $35,000; not seeing a friend or relative in the past month; not having someone to care for them if ill or disabled; lack of health insurance; living in a disadvantaged neighborhood; and living in a state with low public health infrastructure. Apparent treatment-resistant hypertension is defined as the need to take three or more types of anti-high blood pressure medication daily and is associated with an increased risk for stroke, coronary heart disease, heart failure, and all-cause mortality.
