Palms West Hospital breaks ground on patient tower
HCA Florida Palms West Hospital has commenced construction on a new 42-bed patient tower, which will significantly enhance the hospital’s capabilities and address the increasing healthcare demands of the western communities.
June 20, 2025 – HCA Florida Palms West Hospital has broken ground on a new 42-bed patient tower that will transform the hospital and help meet the growing healthcare needs of the western communities.
“Today isn’t just about turning dirt and signaling the start of a large-scale construction project. Far more profoundly, it’s about turning a new page in the healthcare story across our entire region that will never be erased. This groundbreaking symbolizes our unwavering commitment to progress, innovation and, most importantly, the health, safety and welfare of our community. We are not just constructing a building; we are building a healthier tomorrow for generations to come, ensuring access to advanced care and a brighter future for all,” said Jason L. Kimbrell, chief executive officer of HCA Florida Palms West Hospital.
The tower expansion, which was announced in March of 2024, will stretch the footprint of the hospital nearly to Southern Boulevard and include a new hospital entrance, main lobby, registration area, coffee shop, academic classrooms, an auditorium and courtyard. The tower’s 42-beds will be dedicated to patients of the hospital’s Robotic Center of Excellence. While the initial plans are for a one-floor expansion, the tower is being developed to grow to five stories. The design is inspired by a five-star hotel with high-end appointments.
The groundbreaking timing was chosen due to its significance in the history of the hospital as HCA Healthcare announced plans to build the hospital in Loxahatchee in June of 1981. The hospital opened 1986. In a nod to the hospital’s history, former chief executive officers, Mike Pugh, Bland Eng and Heather Rohan attended the ceremony. HCA Florida Palms West Hospital’s beloved first CEO, Mike Pugh, was honored with the announcement that the courtyard in the new tower would be named in his honor.

Health Foundation of South Florida Chief Strategy Officer Featured at 2025 Grantmakers In Health Annual Conference
June 16, 2025 – The Health Foundation of South Florida is proud to share that its Chief Strategy Officer, Dr. Janisse Schoepp, was a featured speaker at the 2025 Grantmakers In Health (GIH) Annual Conference on Health Philanthropy.
Dr. Schoepp was a panelist during the Learning Lab session titled “Impact Investing: A Tool to Bolster Impact and Catalyze Place-Based Collaboration,” a three-hour deep dive into how foundations can align capital with their mission to accelerate systems-level change. The session equipped philanthropic leaders—foundation executives and trustees—with tools and real-world examples to help launch or scale their own impact investing and anchor collaborative strategies.
Drawing on her work at the Health Foundation, Dr. Schoepp shared insights on structuring early-stage impact investments, building buy-in from boards and staff, and engaging anchor institutions—such as hospitals and universities—in regional, equity-centered investment strategies. She also spotlighted the Foundation’s South Florida Anchor Alliance, which she helped establish to create a more inclusive economy through local procurement and workforce development.
“Impact investing is not just a financial tool—it’s a strategic lever for advancing equity and improving population health at scale,” said Dr. Schoepp. “We’re demonstrating how health foundations can move capital in ways that shift systems and deepen their impact beyond grantmaking.”

Researchers identify key B-cell lymphoma traits linked with greatest benefit from CD19 CAR T cell therapy
Largest study of its kind provides new insights on lymphoma biology to guide clinical approaches
Study points to opportunities for alternative approaches to treat patients who do not benefit from CAR T cell therapies
JUNE 18, 2025 ― In the largest study of its kind, researchers from The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center identified three subgroups of patients with large B-cell lymphoma (LBCL) who have different levels of benefit from CD19 chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cell therapy.
In the study, published today in Cancer Cell, researchers profiled samples from 232 patients with LBCL to create “LymphoMAPs” that provide detailed information about the environment surrounding lymphoma cells and how they relate to clinical data and patient outcomes. The findings offer new insights to guide physicians toward the best potential clinical pathways for patients based on the underlying biology of the tumors profiled.
“This study marks a pivotal step in refining precision medicine for patients with large B-cell lymphoma by accounting for the non-malignant cells that surround and interact with the malignant B-cells,” said corresponding author Michael Green, Ph.D., associate professor of Lymphoma/Myeloma. “By identifying the three patient subgroups that have significantly different outcomes following CD19 CAR T cell therapy, we move toward enhancing treatment selection for clinicians and pave the way for biology-driven targeted therapies for patients who may not respond as well.”

Cancer before 40: Mayo Clinic expert shares 3 topics that younger patients often want to discuss
JUNE 16 2025 — Dr. Allison Rosenthal’s experience facing a leukemia diagnosis while in medical school inspired her to pursue a career fighting cancer. It also gave her insight into aspects of life with cancer for people under 40. Now, Dr. Rosenthal is among the leaders of an effort at Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Cancer Center to help younger adults and older teens receive age-appropriate care and support. In this expert alert, Dr. Rosenthal shares three topics that younger people with cancer often want to discuss with their healthcare teams.
“I have a very big passion and motivation to take care of our younger cancer patients,” Dr. Rosenthal explains. “These are some of the people who need the most support after treatment.”
Advances in cancer treatments have made many of the cancers most common in younger people highly treatable and often curable, Dr. Rosenthal says.
Worldwide, roughly 1.3 million people ages 15 to 39 were diagnosed with cancer in 2022, the most recent statistics available, according to the International Agency for Research on Cancer. The most common cancers in that age group were breast, thyroid, cervical, testicular, ovarian, blood cancers (leukemias and lymphomas) and colorectal, agency figures show.
While long-term disease control or a cure is the objective, completing treatment doesn’t necessarily mean that a younger person’s experience with cancer is over, she adds.

Universal Health Services Launches Hippocratic AI’s Generative AI Healthcare Agents to Assist with Post-Discharge Patient Engagement
June 16, 2025 – Hippocratic AI, the global leader in safety-focused generative AI agents for healthcare, and Universal Health Services (NYSE: UHS) announced today that GenAI agents that support clinicians by making discharge follow up outreach to patients by phone have been deployed. The program was initially launched in two UHS subsidiaries: Summerlin Hospital Medical Center (Las Vegas) and Texoma Medical Center (Denison, TX). UHS is one of the largest and most respected providers of hospital and healthcare services in the nation, with its subsidiaries operating 29 Acute Care hospitals, 331 Behavioral Health inpatient facilities, 31 freestanding emergency departments and 60 outpatient and other facilities in 39 states in the U.S., Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the United Kingdom. Most recently, UHS was named a Fortune Most Admired Company and ranked #271 on the Fortune 500.
The goal of the initiative is to support clinicians to continue to monitor their patients after they leave the hospital, quickly detect and alert UHS clinical staff to changes in patient conditions and address any questions patients might have. This initiative should increase patient engagement through more frequent post-discharge patient calls. Thousands of patients have been contacted since the beginning of the year. Hippocratic AI’s GenAI agents began making post-discharge check-in calls, reviewing post-discharge and medication instructions, probing for any new or worsening symptoms and answering patient questions. The average patient rating of the GenAI agent engagements is a highly favorable 9.0 out of 10. Due to positive results, the initiative has expanded to other locations.
“We have been exploring and experimenting with AI for several years now – monitoring carefully and responsibly how AI can effectively support the patient care experience,” said Marc D. Miller, President and CEO, Universal Health Services. “We trust and work closely with Hippocratic AI to determine the safest and best way to integrate our data into their ecosystem to help ensure we can create a meaningful and realistic experience for patients. We have been quite pleased to see the reaction of patients in the overall engagement with the GenAI agent. To date, we have experienced a high degree of success, and we are looking forward to continuing to expand the sample size, iterate and generate results that enhance the patient experience.”
“At Hippocratic AI, our mission is to enhance patient care through our generative AI healthcare agents. Partnering with Universal Health Services has allowed us to showcase how our GenAI agents can deliver compassionate and reliable follow-up care, bridging the gap between hospital discharge and recovery,” said Munjal Shah, CEO and Co-Founder of Hippocratic AI. “This is one example of how we are supporting healthcare professionals and also improving the patient experience across the care continuum. We look forward to continuing to build our partnership with UHS, support their clinicians and cater to patient safety at the highest level.”

HSS Study at EULAR 2025 Congress Uses an AI Model to Predict Readmissions of Pregnant Women with Lupus Based on Social Determinants of Health
JUNE 14, 2025Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) presented a research study at the European Alliance of Associations for Rheumatology (EULAR) Annual Meeting showing that an artificial intelligence (AI)-based model can predict readmissions of pregnant women with lupus by looking at patients’ social factors and clinical comorbidities.
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), commonly known as lupus, is a chronic autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks the individual’s own healthy tissue, causing pain, inflammation, and eventually damage to various organs. It commonly affects young women, and pregnancy is a particularly vulnerable period for this high-risk population. Although lupus-related medical complications affect pregnancy outcomes, social determinants and economic conditions, known as social determinants of health (SDOH), may also be important in shaping maternal health outcomes.
“Pregnant women with lupus have five times higher maternal mortality compared to those without lupus,” said Sandhya Shri Kannayiram, MBBS, MD, rheumatology fellow at HSS and principal author of the study. “There is little data on how social factors, including Income, Insurance, housing stability, access to transportation, availability of utilities, and literacy, along with clinical comorbidities, affect pregnancy outcomes in individuals with lupus.”
To better understand how SDOH impact readmissions for pregnant patients with SLE, the team used ten-year data (from 2011 to 2021) from the National Readmissions Database of the US, encompassing approximately 66,000 hospitalizations in the United States, and counted the number of readmissions within 30 days of discharge during pregnancy and delivery. “We found that approximately 2,500 [pregnant women with lupus] were readmitted to the hospital within 30 days,” said Dr. Kannayiram.

Newer Brain Scans Helping Doctors Detect, Treat Different Types of Dementia Earlier
June 19, 2025 – If you or a loved one is experiencing early signs of dementia or cognitive impairment, specialized brain imaging used at Sarasota Memorial Hospital can help detect different types of dementia and lead to more targeted treatments for Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s dementia and other causes of cognitive decline.
Sarasota Memorial’s radiology and neurology teams use nuclear imaging and advanced diagnostic tools, including the latest DaTscan and PET scans, to detect subtle changes in brain function that help doctors zero in on specific markers for Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s dementia and other causes of cognitive impairment, which may not be visible on traditional MRI or CT scans. DaTscan, which has long been used to help diagnose Parkinson’s disease, can be used to diagnose Parkinson’s-related dementia and dementia with Lewy bodies, while PET scans can be used to detect the earliest markers for Alzheimer’s disease and other causes of cognitive decline.
Determining the specific type of dementia early in the diagnostic process can lead to more targeted treatments and better outcomes.
“Standard scans show brain structure, but these newer tests reveal how the brain is actually functioning,” said SMH radiologist Richard Lichtenstein, MD. “That gives us critical insight into conditions that might otherwise be missed until much later. These tools allow us to act earlier, which can dramatically improve a patient’s quality of life—and that of their family.”

CMS Finalizes Major Rule to Lower Individual Health Insurance Premiums for Americans
Rule Cracks Down on Improper ACA Enrollments, Protects Patient and Taxpayer Dollars, and Restores Marketplace Integrity
JUNE 20, 2025- The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is finalizing a major rule that will lower individual health insurance premiums by approximately 5% on average. It is also projected to save taxpayers up to $12 billion in 2026 by combating the surge of improper enrollments in the Affordable Care Act (ACA) Exchanges, reining in wasteful federal spending, and refocusing on making health insurance markets more affordable and sustainable for hardworking American families. The 2025 Marketplace Integrity and Affordability Final Rule restores oversight, strengthens accountability, and ensures taxpayer dollars are used only for those who are truly eligible.
“We are strengthening health insurance markets for American families and protecting taxpayer dollars from waste, fraud, and abuse,” said U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. “With this rule, we’re lowering marketplace premiums, expanding coverage for families, and ensuring that illegal aliens do not receive taxpayer-funded health insurance.”

2025 Marketplace Integrity and Affordability Final Rule
Introduction
JUNE 20, 2025 – Today, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) issued the “Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act; Marketplace Integrity and Affordability Final Rule,” setting standards for the Health Insurance Marketplaces, which connect millions of consumers to Affordable Care Act (ACA) coverage. The rule finalizes additional safeguards to protect consumers from improper enrollments and changes to their health care coverage, as well as establishes standards to ensure the integrity of the ACA Exchanges.
Key finalized policies include revised standards relating to strengthening income verification processes; modifying eligibility redetermination procedures; removing Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients from the definition of “lawfully present” for eligibility and enrollment in Exchanges and Basic Health Program (BHP) coverage in states that elect to operate a BHP; and pre-enrollment verification for special enrollment periods (SEPs) aimed at reducing improper enrollments and improving the risk pool. Additionally, the rule adopts in regulation the evidentiary standard CMS uses to assess whether to terminate an agent’s, broker’s, or web-broker’s Marketplace Agreements for non-compliance; prohibits issuers of coverage subject to essential health benefits (EHB) requirements from providing coverage for specified sex-trait modification procedures as an EHB; revises de minimis thresholds for the actuarial value (AV) for plans subject to EHB requirements; requires Exchanges to deny eligibility for advance payments of the premium tax credit (APTC) upon a tax filer’s failure to reconcile APTC for one year; revises the federally facilitated Exchange automatic reenrollment hierarchy; requires individuals who are automatically re-enrolled in a QHP with a $0 premium and don’t confirm their eligibility to pay a $5 monthly premium; changes the rule setting the dates for the annual Open Enrollment Period (OEP); eliminates the SEP for persons with projected annual household incomes at or below 150% of the federal poverty level (FPL); and revises the premium adjustment percentage methodology and related parameters.

NIH to Fund Long-Term Health Studies for East Palestine After Train Disaster
June 19, 2025 – Today, at the urging of Vice President JD Vance, under the leadership of U.S. Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., the National Institutes of Health (NIH) launched a five-year, $10 million research initiative to assess and address the long-term health outcomes stemming from the 2023 train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio.
“Vice President Vance, thank you for your persistence on this issue,” Secretary Kennedy said. “You helped drive the first large-scale, coordinated, multi-year federal study dedicated to the long-term health effects of the East Palestine, Ohio disaster. The people of East Palestine have a right to clear, science-backed answers about the impact on their health.”
“As a senator, it was incredibly frustrating watching the Biden administration refuse to examine the potentially dangerous health impacts on the people of East Palestine following the train derailment,” Vice President Vance said. “I’m proud that we finally have a new president that takes the concerns of everyday, working-class people seriously. This historic research initiative will finally result in answers that this community deserves, and I’m grateful for the work of Secretary Kennedy and Director Bhattacharya on these efforts.”
On Feb. 3, 2023, a Norfolk Southern freight train derailment involving 38 cars carrying hazardous chemicals—including vinyl chloride, butyl acrylate, ethylene glycol, and benzene residue—resulted in prolonged fires and controlled burns in East Palestine. Following the derailment, several railcars burned for more than two days, and emergency responders conducted controlled burns which raised concerns about the airborne release of hydrogen chloride and phosgene.

FDA halts new clinical trials that export Americans’ cells to foreign labs in hostile countries for genetic engineering
Trials failed to inform participants about the international transfer.
June 18, 2025 – The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) today announced an immediate review of new clinical trials that involve sending American citizens’ living cells to China and other hostile countries for genetic engineering and subsequent infusion back into U.S. patients – sometimes without their knowledge or consent.
This action by the FDA follows mounting evidence that some of these trials failed to inform participants about the international transfer and manipulation of their biological material and may have exposed Americans’ sensitive genetic data to misuse by foreign governments including adversaries.
This practice was made possible by a data security rule finalized under the Biden Administration in December 2024 and implemented in April 2025 by the U.S. Department of Justice. While the rule imposed export controls to limit sensitive data transfers to countries of concern, the Biden Administration specifically requested and approved a sweeping exemption that allowed U.S. companies to send trial participants’ biological samples — including DNA — for processing overseas as part of FDA-regulated clinical trials. This exemption applied even in cases involving companies partially owned or controlled by the Chinese Communist Party.
