The latest announcement brings the total investment in mental well-being support to $18.9 million over the last five years

MIAMI, Fla. Aug. 26, 2024 – Florida Blue Foundation, the philanthropic affiliate of the state’s Blue Cross Blue Shield plan, is pleased to announce $2.4 million in funding to seven nonprofit organizations across the state to help increase access to mental well-being services and support.

The grants will assist nonprofits with programs aimed at:

Addressing youth mental health challenges; and/or

The big picture: The alarming rise in mental health disorders in recent years underscores the need to expand access to mental health resources and support, which can have a transformative impact on overall health and well-being.

“At Florida Blue, we believe there is no health without mental health, and we’re supporting solutions that help individuals and families thrive,” said Pat Geraghty, President and CEO of Florida Blue. “These grants will help address critical gaps in mental health services, particularly for youth and communities that are under resourced. We’re proud to partner with these outstanding organizations to make a meaningful difference.”

Geraghty made the announcement in Central Florida at Special Hearts Farm, one of the seven nonprofits receiving a grant from the Florida Blue Foundation.

Therapy dogs bring joy to staff at HCA Florida Highlands Hospital during quarterly training

August 26, 2024 – HCA Florida Highlands Hospital, a 126-bed facility, and part of HCA Florida Healthcare, the largest healthcare system in the state, recently partnered with Highlands County Sheriff’s Office to host a therapy dog training at the facility. Therapy dogs and their sheriff’s office K-9 teams from counties across the state of Florida gather on a quarterly basis to stay up-to-date on their ‘Paws and Stripes’ certification, run by the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office. This particular get-together included 15 therapy dogs.

“Today we focused on hospital familiarization, so that’s different sights and sounds, and it’s preparing the teams to help victims should they come here on a call,” said Liz Fischer, therapy dog handler at Highlands County Sheriff’s Office. “It’s acclimating dogs to different exposures and experiences.”

Kimberly Goddard, the manager of the medical/surgical/telemetry/orthopedics unit at HCA Florida Highlands Hospital, was the main facilitator of bringing the dogs to the facility. She had often encountered Liz in her previous unit, the emergency room, and once asked if the dogs could come to the hospital.

NCH Advocates for Fair Reimbursement & Patient Access to Local Care in Florida Blue Negotiation

Naples, FL., August 27, 2024   Naples Comprehensive Health (NCH) continues to proactively negotiate with Florida Blue Cross Blue Shield (Florida Blue) in an effort to come to a resolution regarding contract terms with the insurance company. Following on-going financial challenges stemming from inflation and external economic factors, the system is seeking fair payment from the insurance company to cover the rising cost of patient care and preserve local access to doctors and vital services for families across Southwest Florida.

Florida Blue is the third most profitable Blue Cross program in the nation yet pays NCH a lower rate than other insurers that the community hospital is contracted with, meaning NCH is reimbursed less than other hospitals in the region for the exact same services, even though the cost to provide patient care is similar. NCH is asking Florida Blue to be accountable partners and pay fair rates that keep pace with inflation and prioritize the best interests of patients.

Biden-Harris Administration Awards $100 Million to Navigators Who Will Help Millions of Americans — Especially in Underserved Communities — Sign Up for Health Coverage

Longer grant periods will allow more Navigators to reach consumers where they are, building on the Affordable Care Act’s historic health coverage gains

August 26, 2024 – The Biden-Harris Administration today continued its historic investment in health care coverage and the Affordable Care Act (ACA) by awarding a new round of $100 million to organizations vital to helping underserved communities, consumers, and small businesses find and enroll in quality, affordable health coverage through HealthCare.gov, the Health Insurance Marketplace®. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is awarding the grants, in advance of this year’s Marketplace Open Enrollment (which begins November 1, 2024) to 44 Navigator grantees in states using HealthCare.gov. The grants are part of a commitment of up to $500 million over five years — the longest grant period and financial commitment to date, and a critical boost for recruiting trusted local organizations to better connect with those who often face barriers to obtaining health care coverage.

“The Biden-Harris Administration believes that health care should be a right. We are committed to ensuring that all communities and individuals are connected to affordable, high-quality health coverage. And to help make that possible, we are making the single largest investment ever in the history of the Navigator program,” said HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra. “Under President Biden and Vice President Harris, Navigators have helped educate and enroll millions in quality coverage, contributing to the lowest uninsurance rate in our nation’s history, including record enrollments in communities often left behind. HHS will continue to double down on our efforts so we can reach people where they are, increase coverage, and save lives.

Low-intensity’ blood stem cell transplants for sickle cell appear safe for lung health

NIH study finds lung function remained stable or improved in adults after transplant.

August 27, 2024 – So-called low-intensity blood stem cell transplants, which use milder conditioning agents than standard stem cell transplants, do not appear to damage the lungs and may help improve lung function in some patients with sickle cell disease (SCD), according to a three-year study of adults who underwent the procedure at the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Damage to lung tissue and worsened lung function is a major complication and leading cause of death in people with sickle cell disease, a debilitating blood disorder. The new study, published today in the Annals of the American Thoracic Society, helps answer whether less intensive types of transplants, which tend to be better tolerated by many adults, by themselves either cause or promote further harm to the lungs.
