BROWARD HEALTH: A LIFESAVING FAREWELL
JUNE 3, 2024- It was just a regular day for bioengineer Mike Shenkin at Broward Health Medical Center. He was working on a rapid infuser, a medical device, for the Level I trauma center. As part of his job, he inspects and maintains equipment used on patients around the hospital system, but his routine was interrupted by an unexpected collapse.
Shenkin’s coworkers, Fred McMurtrie and Richard Morris heard a distinct noise and noticed that Shenkin had stopped breathing and had no pulse. They instantly recognized that he was suffering a cardiac arrest. At the same time Tara Driscoll, a respiratory therapist at Broward Health Medical Center, was walking into the Clinical Engineering Department to speak with another staff member. “I had no clue what I was walking into,” said Driscoll. “I actually initiated CPR on him.”

June 3, 2024 – In a proof-of-concept study, researchers at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) have developed an artificial intelligence (AI) tool that uses routine clinical data, such as that from a simple blood test, to predict whether someone’s cancer will respond to immune checkpoint inhibitors, a type of immunotherapy drug that helps immune cells kill cancer cells. The machine-learning model may help doctors determine if immunotherapy drugs are effective for treating a patient’s cancer. The study, published June 3, 2024, in Nature Cancer, was led by researchers at the National Cancer Institute’s (NCI) Center for Cancer Research and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York. U.S. CLINICAL TRIALS BEGIN FOR TWICE-YEARLY HIV PREVENTION INJECTION

June 4, 2024 – Two clinical trials have launched to examine a novel long-acting form of HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) in cisgender women and people who inject drugs. The mid-stage studies will assess the safety, acceptability, and pharmacokinetic (how a drug moves through the body) of lenacapavir, an antiretroviral drug administered by injection every six months. The studies are sponsored and funded by Gilead Sciences, Inc., and implemented through the HIV Prevention Trails Network (HPTN). The HPTN is supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), with scientific collaboration on this study and others from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) as well as co-funding from NIDA and other NIH institutes.
