TRAUMA SURVIVORS SHARE THEIR STORIES AT MEMORIAL REGIONAL AND JOE DIMAGGIO CHILDREN’S HOSPITALS ANNUAL TRAUMA SURVIVORS DAY

May 24, 2024 – Memorial Regional Hospital and Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospitals’ Level 1 Trauma Center welcomed back over thirty trauma survivors to reunite with clinicians, hospital staff, and EMS providers and first responders who helped save their lives. The event, held during National Trauma Awareness Month, celebrated trauma survivors and their lifelong journey.

Peter Powers, CEO of Memorial Regional Hospital, who serves on the Florida Trauma System Advisory Council, opened the event with words of encouragement to caregivers and patients alike.

DR. ESTELAMARI RODRIGUEZ HONORED AS GRACE PATIENT EDUCATOR OF THE YEAR

Spanish-language content for lung cancer patients helps break down barriers to care.

MIAMI, FLORIDA – June 3, 2024 – Estelamari Rodriguez, M.D., M.P.H., is the recipient of the Patient Educator of the Year award from Cancer GRACE (Global Resource for Advancing Cancer Education). The award was presented May 31 in Chicago in recognition of Rodriguez’s work in breaking down language barriers around the world by creating Spanish-language educational content about lung cancer for patients and caregivers.

As a physician and a Latina, Rodriguez, a bilingual thoracic oncologist at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, part of the University of Miami Health System, has seen firsthand the ways that language barriers often prevent Spanish-speaking patients from receiving optimal care.

BROWARD HEALTH: A LIFESAVING FAREWELL

JUNE 3, 2024- It was just a regular day for bioengineer Mike Shenkin at Broward Health Medical Center. He was working on a rapid infuser, a medical device, for the Level I trauma center. As part of his job, he inspects and maintains equipment used on patients around the hospital system, but his routine was interrupted by an unexpected collapse.

Shenkin’s coworkers, Fred McMurtrie and Richard Morris heard a distinct noise and noticed that Shenkin had stopped breathing and had no pulse. They instantly recognized that he was suffering a cardiac arrest.
At the same time Tara Driscoll, a respiratory therapist at Broward Health Medical Center, was walking into the Clinical Engineering Department to speak with another staff member.
“I had no clue what I was walking into,” said Driscoll. “I actually initiated CPR on him.”

MIAMI CANCER INSTITUTE RECEIVES STATE OF FLORIDA GRANT FOR BRAIN METASTASES TRIAL

May 30, 2024 – Miami Cancer Institute, part of Baptist Health South Florida, was awarded a $984,940.64 grant from the Casey DeSantis Florida Cancer Innovation Fund for a multicenter clinical trial that targets brain metastases, led by physician researcher, Manmeet Ahluwalia, M.D. The Phase I trial of trastuzumab deruxtecan (T-Dxd) with stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) in patients with brain metastases from HER-2-positive breast cancer hopes to combine two therapeutic avenues to effectively shrink or eliminate brain tumors.

U.S. DRUG-RELATED INFANT DEATHS MORE THAN DOUBLED FROM 2018 TO 2022

BOCA RATON – June 4, 2024 – A new study by Florida Atlantic University’s Schmidt College of Medicine has uncovered a disturbing trend in drug-related infant deaths in the United States from 2018 to 2022.

Infant deaths are those that occur between the time a child is born and age 1. Drug-involved deaths are those in which drugs are either the primary cause of death or a contributing factor and may occur due to maternal drug use, inadvertent or accidental intake of specific prescriptions, illicit or non-medical use of drugs and other incidents where drugs were linked to death.

NIH SCIENTISTS DEVELOP AI TOOL TO PREDICT HOW CANCER PATIENTS WILL RESPOND TO IMMUNOTHERAPY

June 3, 2024 – In a proof-of-concept study, researchers at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) have developed an artificial intelligence (AI) tool that uses routine clinical data, such as that from a simple blood test, to predict whether someone’s cancer will respond to immune checkpoint inhibitors, a type of immunotherapy drug that helps immune cells kill cancer cells. The machine-learning model may help doctors determine if immunotherapy drugs are effective for treating a patient’s cancer. The study, published June 3, 2024, in Nature Cancer, was led by researchers at the National Cancer Institute’s (NCI) Center for Cancer Research and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York. NCI is part of the National Institutes of Health.

U.S. CLINICAL TRIALS BEGIN FOR TWICE-YEARLY HIV PREVENTION INJECTION

Studies will focus on priority populations underrepresented in HIV clinical research.

June 4, 2024  – Two clinical trials have launched to examine a novel long-acting form of HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) in cisgender women and people who inject drugs. The mid-stage studies will assess the safety, acceptability, and pharmacokinetic (how a drug moves through the body) of lenacapavir, an antiretroviral drug administered by injection every six months. The studies are sponsored and funded by Gilead Sciences, Inc., and implemented through the HIV Prevention Trails Network (HPTN). The HPTN is supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), with scientific collaboration on this study and others from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) as well as co-funding from NIDA and other NIH institutes.

SERVICE DOGS MAY REDUCE PTSD SYMPTOMS FOR MILITARY MEMBERS AND VETERANS

June 4, 2024 – For military members and veterans who have been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), adding a service dog to their usual care could reduce the severity of PTSD symptoms, feelings of anxiety, and lower depression while enhancing their quality of life and psychosocial functioning, according to a study funded by the National Institutes of Health.

NEW CLINICAL ASSESSMENT TOOL IMPROVES DEMENTIA CARE ACTIONS IN PRIMARY CARE PATIENTS

Resource tripled the odds of receiving dementia-related care within 90 days.

June 3, 2024 – A five-minute cognitive assessment coupled with a decision tree embedded in electronic medical records, known as 5-Cog, improved dementia diagnosis and care, based on a clinical trial funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and conducted in an urban primary care setting. Researchers evaluated the system among 1,200 predominantly Black and Hispanic American older adults who presented to primary care with cognitive concerns. The findings appear in Nature Medicine.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla., June 3, 2024  — Trulieve Cannabis Corp.
