To support individuals navigating these complex emotions, VITAS Healthcare will host a free, confidential Mother’s Day Grief Helpline on Sunday, May 10, offering nationwide support from trained bereavement specialists.
The VITAS Mother’s Day Grief Helpline provides immediate access to experienced professionals who understand how holidays can intensify grief and can offer comfort, guidance and practical coping strategies.
For nearly 50 years, VITAS has provided hospice services including grief and bereavement care to patients and families, supporting them at the end of life and through the months that follow a loss. Last year, more than 38,000 VITAS hospice patients were mothers, representing tens of thousands of children and families who may feel that loss more deeply this week.

| FHA: Medicaid Should Do More for Floridians With Serious Mental Illness

For the millions of Floridians with serious mental illness or substance use disorder, access to regular and timely psychiatric treatment, medication management, and medical care is essential. Equally important is access to education and training, housing, employment, peer relationships, and other long-term community-based supports. These wraparound pieces are just as instrumental as psychiatric care for achieving and maintaining stability, connectedness, and recovery.
As the largest payor of mental health services in the state, Florida Medicaid’s coverage and payment policies have significant influence on both the adequacy of the mental health/substance use clinician workforce and the availability and accessibility of community-based supports.
Mental Health Awareness Month is an opportune time to highlight what more Medicaid can do to ensure its contracted managed care plans’ payment amounts and network adequacy policies support the robust and timely availability of psychiatrists, psychologists, and other behavioral health clinicians and to continue investing in and expanding funding for proven community-based behavioral health programs, such as the Clubhouse model and Florida Assertive Community Treatment (FACT) Teams.

Broward Health: A Return to Trusted Care at Broward Health Coral Springs
The Sound of Connection: When Caregivers Become Family
May 5, 2026 –Nicole Benefield’s journey into motherhood began five years ago when she gave birth to her first daughter at Broward Health Coral Springs. Today, after delivering her second daughter at the very same hospital, with the same obstetrician genecologist (OB-GYN), the 34-year old Plantation resident said the choice to return was effortless—and deeply personal.
Nicole gave birth to Lenox Grace in January of 2021 at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, when mandated protocols were very strict. She could have only one visitor, and many of the moments she expected to share with her family weren’t possible.
If that wasn’t stressful enough, at her last visit with her OB-GYN, before giving birth, her doctor, Linda D. Green, M.D., told Nicole that her daughter was going to have a high birth weight, a factor that results in a higher risk of complications during delivery.
Dr. Green shared that there was an increased risk of shoulder dystocia, where the baby can be injured exiting the birth canal. She discussed all the risks and benefits with Nicole and her husband, Shawn, as well as the option for an operative delivery, called a cesarean section.

HCA Florida Woodmont Hospital Nurses Give Back Ahead of Nurses Week, Supporting Local Families Through Harvest Drive Florida
May 5, 2026 – In celebration of Nurses Week, nurses from HCA Florida Woodmont Hospital stepped beyond the bedside and into the community, volunteering their time with Harvest Drive Florida to help provide essential food supplies to families in need.
During the day of service, the nursing team worked together to unload, organize and pack non-perishable food items for distribution. Volunteers also assisted with preparing bags and loading completed food packages for delivery, helping ensure families across the community receive much-needed support.
“We don’t just work in these communities – we live here,” said Caren Roach, Chief Nursing Officer. “Contributing time and resources helps our communities, our patients and our people thrive. Nurses Week is a meaningful opportunity for our team to show up in a different way and extend our care beyond the hospital walls.”

Cleveland Clinic, RIKEN, and IBM Model a 12,635-Atom Protein – the Largest Known to Be Simulated with Quantum Computers
Milestone simulation of biologically meaningful molecules expands quantum-centric supercomputing’s role as a scientific tool
May 5, 2026 – Scientists at Cleveland Clinic, RIKEN, and IBM (NYSE: IBM) have used IBM quantum computers and two of the world’s most powerful supercomputers to simulate protein complexes spanning up to 12,635 atoms. These are the largest-known simulations of biologically meaningful molecules performed with quantum hardware yet, and signal that quantum computers are maturing into useful scientific tools which can help solve fundamental problems in biology, chemistry, and life sciences.
The results were achieved in part by an innovative algorithm that optimizes how quantum and classical computers can work together, a framework known as quantum-centric supercomputing. Using this approach, the team captured the behavior of two biochemically relevant proteins that are roughly 40 times larger than what this same method could initially achieve just six months ago. Additionally, the accuracy of the simulations in a key step of the workflow improved by up to 210 times over this same period.
The decision to explore if quantum computers could offer value in the simulation of protein complexes was motivated by challenges faced today by researchers when studying how a drug candidate could bind to a protein. This can be one of the most difficult and expensive problems in life sciences research, and one that today’s existing computational methods have struggled to exactly solve as molecules increase in size. Doing so accurately and early in the discovery process could meaningfully shorten drug development timelines that currently can stretch over a decade and require substantial investment to produce a single medicine.

Cleveland Clinic Children’s Unveils Program to Expand Access to Pediatric Mental Health Care
Renovations underway at Cleveland Clinic Children’s Hospital for Rehabilitation with fall opening slated
May 4, 2026 – Cleveland Clinic Children’s is launching a pediatric partial hospitalization program with an anticipated opening this fall at Cleveland Clinic Children’s Hospital for Rehabilitation.
The program will be located in a renovated space specifically designed to provide structured, supportive care for children and adolescents experiencing significant behavioral health challenges.
The pediatric partial hospitalization program will provide intensive multidisciplinary treatment for youth who need more support than traditional outpatient therapy, but do not require inpatient care. The program will also incorporate innovative technology such as virtual reality exposure therapy, AI-assisted emotional regulation therapy and frequency-specific microcurrent therapy to support therapeutic learning and engagement, helping young patients build the skills they need for long-term recovery.
In 2021, leading pediatric groups such as the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Children’s Hospital Association and the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry declared a National State of Emergency in children’s mental health. Following the COVID-19 pandemic, rates of depression, anxiety and suicide attempts soared by more than 45% among children and teens. At Cleveland Clinic’s pediatric emergency room, patients younger than 21 seeking mental health care increased by almost 300%.

May 6, 2026 – Sarasota Memorial Health Care System joins the nation in celebrating National Nurses Week, a time to appreciate and acknowledge the dedication and compassionate care provided by 4,000 nurses across its two hospitals and health system, along with 1,250 patient care and multi-skilled technicians who support them.

156-bed Facility Expands Access to Care for Palm Beach Gardens Community
May 4. 2026 — Gresham Smith celebrated the completion of Alan B. Miller Medical Center, a new flagship subsidiary hospital of Universal Health Services, Inc. (UHS), at a ceremonial ribbon-cutting event on April 29 in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. Named after the Founder and Executive Chairman of UHS, the new 156-bed, 430,000-square-foot full-service facility expands and enhances access to healthcare for the growing community.
Located in the Alton subdivision near Donald Ross Road, Alan B. Miller Medical Center offers a comprehensive range of medical services including emergency care; cardiac, orthopedics and surgical services; labor, delivery, recovery and post-partum care; advanced imaging; and inpatient concierge services.
“This project is a significant milestone for patients and the Palm Beach Gardens community,” said David Zegley, AIA, LEED AP, Project Executive at Gresham Smith. “Our goal was to create more than just a hospital — we set out to design a landmark facility that communicates UHS’ commitment to excellence, innovation and patient-centered care. Florida Division of Emergency Management Calls on Floridians to Prepare Ahead of Hurricane Season with 2026 Florida Hurricane Preparedness Week
~ The 2026 Atlantic Hurricane Season Begins June 1 and runs until November 30~
May 4, 2026 – The Florida Division of Emergency Management (FDEM) is calling on all Floridians to prepare ahead of hurricane season as the state recognizes the first week of May as Florida Hurricane Preparedness Week, in alignment with National Weather Service Hurricane Preparedness Week. From May 3–9, FDEM will highlight practical steps residents can take now to protect their families, pets, and property, urging Floridians to be proactive and make a plan before a storm threatens.
Early action drives tangible results, and Florida residents should begin their preparations now,” said FDEM Executive Director Kevin Guthrie. “Though last season produced minimal activity in Florida, we remain extremely vulnerable to hurricanes and their associated hazards. By taking small steps now to prepare, residents can make a significant difference in protecting lives and property.”
The Atlantic hurricane season officially begins June 1 and continues through November 30, with peak activity occurring from mid-August through mid-October. The focus each year is to increase awareness and preparedness among Florida residents for the Atlantic Hurricane Season and the hazards it brings. On average, there are about 14 named storms each year, with approximately 3 reaching major hurricane status, defined as Category 3 or higher. This past season, three storms reached Category 5 strength, but no hurricanes made U.S. landfall – the first time since 2015.

Delray Medical Center Awards Scholarships to 15 Students, Celebrating 20 Years of Support for Future Leaders
April 30, 2026 – Delray Medical Center proudly awarded scholarships to 15 outstanding students as part of its Volunteer Auxiliary Board Scholarship program, continuing a 20-year tradition of investing in the next generation of leaders.
Each recipient was awarded a $1,500 scholarship during a special presentation held this week, recognizing their dedication to academic excellence, volunteerism, and service to others.

Costco campaign supports Golisano Children’s Hospital in May
Month-long campaign raises essential funds for only Children’s Miracle Network hospital in Southwest Florida
May 1, 2026 — Costco shoppers across Southwest Florida can support Golisano Children’s Hospital, the only Children’s Miracle Network hospital between Tampa and Miami, during the retailer’s annual May is for Miracles campaign.
From May 1–31, Costco members shopping at locations in Fort Myers, Naples, and Estero are invited to round up their purchases or make a donation at checkout. All funds raised will benefit children receiving care locally at Golisano Children’s Hospital.
As the sole Children’s Miracle Network hospital serving Southwest Florida, Golisano Children’s Hospital provides specialized pediatric care to children throughout the region. Contributions through Children’s Miracle Network campaigns help fund critical services, advanced medical equipment, and specialty programs not typically covered by insurance.
In 2025, the three Southwest Florida Costco locations raised more than $237,000 for Golisano Children’s Hospital. Since 2020, local Costco fundraising efforts have generated nearly $1.4 million to support pediatric care. Costco also matches a portion of every donation, increasing the impact of each contribution.

Mayo Clinic: Improving how multiple myeloma is understood and treated
May 4, 2026 — Research from Mayo Clinic is helping refine how multiple myeloma is diagnosed and treated, with findings that support more personalized therapies and identify promising immunotherapy strategies for aggressive forms of the disease.
The research led by Sikander Ailawadhi, M.D., Shaji Kumar, M.D., Akhilesh Pandey, M.D., Ph.D., and Richard Kandasamy, Ph.D. in the Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Cancer Center, focuses on tailoring treatment based on disease biology and improving outcomes for patients living longer with the cancer.
Treating multiple myeloma as a chronic disease
Multiple myeloma, a blood cancer that affects plasma cells in the bone marrow, can cause abnormal proteins to accumulate and damage organs. At Mayo Clinic, patients with multiple myeloma receive tailored treatment that varies from person to person based on how the disease develops and progresses.
Care strategies continue to evolve, including immunotherapy and clinical trials that study the most effective order to use available treatments. One approach uses monoclonal antibodies given in sequence to better target cancer cells and improve outcomes for patients whose disease has returned.
“We take into account the risks, but also what the patients’ wants, needs and aspirations are, and make a decision about treatment that brings all this together,” says Dr. Ailawadhi, a hematologist and oncologist. “Much has been learned about the best use of novel treatments such as CAR-T and other immunotherapy approaches.”
New immunotherapy strategies show promise
In one area of research, Dr. Kumar, a hematologist, and colleagues published a study in the New England Journal of Medicine showing that an off-the-shelf dual-antibody immunotherapy can produce deep and durable responses in extramedullary multiple myeloma, a form of the disease with historically limited treatment options.
“We are seeing powerful responses in a disease that historically has resisted every therapy,” says Dr. Kumar.
The approach uses two engineered antibodies to engage T cells through separate immune pathways, directing an immune response against myeloma cells. The treatment is administered in a standard infusion setting, in contrast to more complex cell therapies.
In early results, a majority of patients responded to the treatment, and many achieved no detectable disease, suggesting a potential new option for patients with resistant disease.

AMA: Why better enforcement of the No Surprises Act is needed now

May 1, 2026 – No one should be afraid to get medical care because of the threat of a surprise bill. That’s why, when the No Surprises Act (NSA) took effect in 2022, it was a welcome development for patients and physicians alike.
This landmark law aims to protect patients from unexpected, often devastating out-of-network bills they might receive after receiving care in an emergency, or at an in-network hospital where not every physician or provider was on their insurance plan. The NSA not only protects patients but also promotes fair contracting incentives for physicians and insurers through an independent-dispute resolution (IDR) process.
But fast forward to today, and it’s clear that some health plans are undermining both the letter and the spirit of the NSA. Unless federal agencies step in with robust enforcement and transparency, the careful balance Congress created will unravel, putting patient access at risk and threatening the viability of independent physician practices. That is precisely the message (PDF) the AMA and 111 specialty societies and state medical associations are now sharing with federal officials.

AMA research details toll of broken medical liability system
April 27, 2027 – CHICAGO — New research studies from the American Medical Association (AMA) reveal that many physicians face a significant risk of being sued during their careers. The ever-present risk of lawsuits—even when no error occurred—and high medical liability insurance premiums have contributed to a prolonged period of heavy financial burden on doctors, fueling escalating expenses throughout the health care system.
“Physicians know the practice of medicine carries risk, and even highly skilled doctors face lawsuits,” said AMA President Bobby Mukkamala, MD. “But a claim does not mean a mistake was made. Most cases never find fault with the physician, and the majority are dropped or dismissed before trial. Doctors continue to take on complex, high-risk care because patients depend on it. However, the ongoing liability risk not only challenges physicians but it increases practice expenses, reinforces defensive medical practices, and drives up health care costs for patients and families.”

May 1, 2026 – Florida State University awarded an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters to alumna and Spanx founder Sara Blakely during spring commencement Friday, recognizing a career built on instinct, persistence and a willingness to do things differently.
When Blakely took the stage, she didn’t dwell on success. She talked about failure, self-doubt and the decision that shaped everything that came next.
“The most critical thing that I did — the thing that everyone here can do — is I made one big investment early on,” she told the graduates. “I invested in me.”
Blakely returned to campus 33 years after graduating from Florida State, where she said her dreams began, even if her path after college didn’t go as planned.
She had hoped to become a lawyer. She failed the LSAT twice. She went to a job fair and was rejected by 20 companies. She hoped to be Goofy at Disney World and didn’t meet the height requirement.

HHS Launches MAHA Action Plan to Curb Psychiatric Overprescribing
May 4, 2026 — The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) today announced efforts to curb psychiatric overprescribing at a MAHA Institute summit on mental health and overmedicalization. As the closing speaker, HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. laid out a new action plan to promote appropriate psychiatric prescribing and drive deprescribing when clinically indicated.
“Today, we take clear and decisive action to confront our nation’s mental health crisis by addressing the overuse of psychiatric medications—especially among children,” said Secretary Kennedy. “We will support patient autonomy, require informed consent and shared decision-making, and shift the standard of care toward prevention, transparency, and a more holistic approach to mental health.”
HHS agencies are bringing together their collective expertise and aligning to evaluate prescription patterns for psychiatric medications, their benefits and potential harms, and elevate the role of nonmedication treatments and scalable, evidence-based solutions to improve mental health.

Lee Health: Chronic Pain Self-Management Workshops
Learn how to better manage your chronic pain
May 5, 2026 — Would you like to learn how to better manage chronic pain conditions such as arthritis, fibromyalgia, back pain, headaches and more?
Lee Health’s “It’s All About You,” Chronic Pain Self-Management Program” a Self- Management Resource Program with the SMRC is offering a research based Chronic Pain Self-Management program for the community. The workshop is free and meets weekly for six weeks.
Information presented in the workshop can help you become empowered to improve your quality of life. Learn how to more easily manage your medications; understand the benefits of exercise; manage symptoms of stress, pain and fatigue; and make smarter decisions related to healthy eating. Participants will also receive a copy of the book “Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Pain”.
