SYLVESTER RESEARCH SHOWS HOW INTERACTIONS BETWEEN TUMOR GENES AND MICROENVIRONMENT INFLUENCE TREATMENT RESPONSE IN MULTIPLE MYELOMA
MULTICENTER COLLABORATION IDENTIFIES GENETIC AND IMMUNE-RELATED CHANGES THAT DIMINISH RESPONSES TO OTHERWISE EFFECTIVE THERAPIES FOR NEWLY DIAGNOSED PATIENTS
NOVEMBER 9, 2023 – A multicenter study led by researchers at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine shows how interactions between tumor cells and immune components of the microenvironment can impact treatment responses and outcomes in patients newly diagnosed with multiple myeloma who undergo combination treatments that include targeted immunotherapy.
New drugs developed over the past two decades have dramatically improved survival rates, with “deep” and sustained treatment responses associated with low rates of progression. Immunotherapies targeting a molecule, CD38, that is found on multiple myeloma cells have been particularly effective, but even with treatment regimens that include CD38-targeting, the disease fails to respond adequately or progresses prematurely in 30% to 50% of newly diagnosed patients.

UNIQUE BIRTHING EXPERIENCE, AMAZING MATERNITY CARE
November 7, 2023 – When Margate resident Kia Hunter Joseph went into labor with her third child in March 2023, she didn’t realize how different this birthing experience would be compared to her previous two.
Joseph was in her 39th week of pregnancy when she started leaking fluid. Unlike in her prior pregnancies, she didn’t feel any contractions, so at first, she didn’t recognize this as an early sign of labor.
Later that evening, she started feeling contractions that were increasing in intensity. She called her doctor, Jessica White Videa, D.O., and was told to go to the hospital. Dr. Videa was out of town, but her partner was on call and planning on delivering Kia’s baby.

BIDEN-HARRIS ADMINISTRATION LAUNCHES ‘BIRTHING-FRIENDLY’ DESIGNATION ON WEB-BASED CARE COMPARE TOOL

NEW AMA REPORT DETAILS GRIM REALITIES OF WORSENING OVERDOSE EPIDEMIC, CALLS FOR ACTION TO PROVIDE BETTER CARE AND RESOURCES
November 9, 2023 – The 2023 Overdose Epidemic Report, released today by the American Medical Association (AMA), finds opioid prescribing by physicians and other health professionals decreased for the 13th consecutive year, down nearly 50% since 2012, while overdoses and deaths related to illicitly manufactured fentanyl, xylazine and other synthetic substances continue to increase. In 2022, more than 107,000 people died from a drug-related overdose in the United States. Data shows the epidemic is increasingly impacting young people, Black and Brown people, and pregnant people.
There have been signs of progress in the past year – notably community-based distribution of naloxone by leading harm reduction supporters and approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration of over-the-counter (OTC) naloxone, which the AMA has long championed. Naloxone dispensing has increased more than 200% since 2018. The AMA continues to support widespread distribution of naloxone and urges physicians to educate patients on naloxone and prescribe to patients at risk of overdose.

AMA PRESIDENT DECRIES DEVASTATION OF ANOTHER ROUND OF MEDICARE CUTS
Friday, November 10, 2023 – NATIONAL HARBOR, Md. – At the opening of the Interim Meeting of the American Medical Association (AMA) House of Delegates, physician and medical student leaders faced the stark realities of a health system in crisis from a broken and unsustainable Medicare payment system, increased practice costs, out of control paperwork and prior authorization demands, market consolidation, and, as a result, burnout.
In his speech to delegates, AMA President Jesse M. Ehrenfeld, M.D., MPH, outlined the specific challenges, elevated stories of colleagues leaving the profession early, and spoke about government interference in the practice of medicine. He also spoke of the power and influence of organized medicine to affect change, and he unveiled a new Fix Medicare Now grassroots campaign to help reverse devastating Medicare cuts that imperil patient access to their physicians.

PREVIOUS GENETIC ASSOCIATION STUDIES INVOLVING PEOPLE WITH EUROPEAN ANCESTRY MAY BE INACCURATE
NIH study finds that failing to account for mixed genetic lineages could lead to inaccuracies.
November 7, 2023 – Researchers have found that previous studies analyzing the genomes of people with European ancestry may have reported inaccurate results by not fully accounting for population structure. By considering mixed genetic lineages, researchers at the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI), part of the National Institutes of Health, demonstrated that previously inferred links between a genomic variant that helps digest lactose and traits such as a person’s height and cholesterol level may not be valid.
The study, published in Nature Communications, shows that people with European ancestry, who were previously treated as a genetically homogenous group in large-scale genetic studies, have clear evidence of mixed genetic lineages, known as admixture. As such, the results from previous genome-wide association studies that do not account for admixture in their examinations of people with European ancestry should be re-evaluated.

UMBILICAL CORD MILKING APPEARS TO BE SAFE IN PRETERM INFANTS BORN AFTER 28 WEEKS
Findings from NIH-funded study suggest that technique may enable faster response than standard procedure.
November 9, 2023- A treatment to move blood from the umbilical cord into an infant’s body may provide a safe option for preterm infants born after 28 weeks who need rapid support, suggests a study supported by the National Institutes of Health. The procedure, called umbilical cord milking, involves gently squeezing the cord between the thumb and forefinger and pushing the blood into the newborn’s abdomen. The new findings suggest that concerns raised by a 2019 study of infants born before 28 weeks—which concluded that umbilical cord milking might increase the risk of bleeding inside the brain—do not apply to preterm infants born after 28 weeks. The current study appears in Pediatrics.
The standard procedure, delaying cord clamping while blood naturally flows into the infant’s body, takes 30 to 180 seconds. However, cord milking, takes about 20 seconds, reducing delay for infants who need immediate assistance, such as respiratory support. Both procedures allow for umbilical cord blood to reach the infant’s body before clamping, reducing the risk of anemia and other complications seen among infants receiving immediate cord clamping and cutting.
