Tampa General Hospital Takes Surgical Precision to the Next Level with New Intuitive da Vinci 5® Surgical System
The advanced platform enables better patient outcomes with minimally invasive care.
August 12, 2024 – Tampa General Hospital (TGH) today announced its acquisition of the new Intuitive da Vinci 5® Surgical System, the latest update in the innovative and advanced surgical platform designed to enable better outcomes with minimally invasive care. Tampa General is the first hospital in the region to offer the new surgical system. The da Vinci® Surgical System provides surgeons with enhanced surgical precision, increased range of motion, improved agility, enhanced visualization and easier access to very confined areas of the body. As a result, surgeons are able to use a minimally invasive approach during urology, gynecology, thoracic and general surgeries. To date, Tampa General has completed more than 15,000 da Vinci procedures.
“As one of the nation’s leading academic health centers with demonstrated success in robot-assisted surgery, Tampa General is committed to improving patient outcomes through world-class care,” said Dr. Raviender Bukkapatnam, chief of the TGH Urology Institute, president of Florida Urology Partners, co-director of the Robotic Center of Excellence at Tampa General and the first surgeon to perform robot-assisted surgery at Tampa General in 2008. “Acquiring the new da Vinci 5® Surgical System – the first robotic update in over a decade – marks a major milestone in our continued commitment to surgical innovation with artificial intelligence,” he said.

| VITAS Healthcare Honored With Inaugural Founders Spirit Award by the National Black Nurses Association
MIAMI, FL – VITAS Healthcare has been honored as the inaugural recipient of the prestigious Founders Spirit Award by the National Black Nurses Association (NBNA). The award, presented in late July at the President’s Gala during the NBNA 52nd Annual Institute and Conference in San Francisco, California, recognizes VITAS for over two decades of dedicated support and innovative programming that align with the mission and vision of NBNA’s founders. VITAS was the exclusive organization selected for this honor alongside five other individual recipients.
“VITAS Healthcare, with more than 20 years of dedicated support and innovative programming, has helped to advance the mission and vision of the NBNA founders, and thus we are delighted to honor them with this inaugural NBNA Founders Spirit Award,” stated Dr. Sheldon D. Fields, 14th President of the National Black Nurses Association, Inc.
The Founders Spirit Award is a presidential honor. Its name is meant to evoke the enduring spirit of the original founders who created NBNA more than 50 years ago against the odds and amidst great adversity. Recipients show a documented history of dedicated support and extraordinary service to NBNA, going above and beyond and offering sustained financial philanthropy and advocacy of the mission and vision of the association.
“We are deeply honored to accept this award on behalf of all our dedicated teams who deliver compassionate care to patients and families every day,” said VITAS Vice President of Community Affairs Diane Deese. “Among the many organizations that NBNA collaborates with, we are grateful to be the first recipient of this significant award. The same spirit and tenacity that cultivated NBNA from its inception—the refusal to give up—continues to inspire our efforts to deliver equitable, high-quality end-of-life care to our communities.”
