Tampa, FL – January 19, 2024 – – Tampa General Hospital (TGH) announced that the TGH Cancer Institute recently completed Florida’s first successful infusion of Hemgenix, a gene therapy option for patients with severe hemophilia B — a rare bleeding disorder characterized by failure of the blood to clot properly. Under the direction of Dr. Nathan Visweshwar, an associate professor in the Division of Hematology and Medical Oncology in the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine, and a hematology and oncology specialist for Tampa General, the academic health system became the first in the state and the third hospital in the United States to administer this therapy with positive results.
“The infusion of this therapy is a hallmark of the TGH Cancer Institute’s dedication to propelling innovation to improve outcomes and quality of life in a meaningful way for our hematology/oncology patients,” said Dr. Eduardo M. UPDATED NEWS INFORMATION FROM THE LAST FOUR DAYS IN SOUTH FLORIDA |
MIAMI CANCER INSTITUTE PUBLICATION ANALYZES ROLE OF TISSUE-AGNOSTIC THERAPIES FOR THE TREATMENT OF PRIMARY BRAIN TUMORS
MIAMI, FL – January 19, 2024 – Researchers from Miami Cancer Institute, part of Baptist Health South Florida, today published a study in Trends in Cancer that analyzes the use of tissue-agnostic therapeutics in patients with primary brain tumors (PBTs). The publication describes the current and potential impact of tissue-agnostic therapies on the management of PBTs. As part of the publication, the researchers discuss data from clinical trials of tissue-agnostic targets for PBTs in the context of challenges in managing these tumors. They also describe additional tissue-agnostic targets that hold promise for benefiting patients with PBTs.
“Novel tissue-agnostic therapeutics targeting driver mutations in tumor cells have been recently approved by the FDA and other regulatory bodies across the world, driven by trials that have demonstrated their efficacy and safety across diverse tumor histology,” said Manmeet S. Ahluwalia, M.D., MBA, FASCO, chief of medical oncology, chief scientific officer, deputy director, and Fernandez Family Foundation Endowed Chair in Cancer Research at Miami Cancer Institute, and first author of the study. “However, the relative rarity of primary brain tumors has limited their representation in early trials of tissue-agnostic medications.”
Basket trials – which test a targeted therapy on the molecular profiles of a broad spectrum of cancers – have recently led to the next frontier of precision medicine, that is tissue-agnostic approvals. These enable the use of targeted therapies based on molecular alterations that are present regardless of the tissue of origin of the tumor. There is a substantial genetic, epigenetic, and immunological heterogeneity of PBTs, which adds to the complexity of the tissue-agnostic therapies. Innate differences between various types of PBTs must be considered carefully because even within the same tumor, multiple subtypes within the same spectrum can exist, adding to the histological heterogeneity. However, the concept of tissue-agnostic therapies evolved in the first place from arguments that common molecular profiles can limit the impact of those inter and intra-tumor heterogeneities from a therapeutic perspective by targeting common molecular alterations.

STUDY EXAMINES SUBSTANCE USE IN FIRST RESPONDERS DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC
FAU Researcher, Collaborators Survey 2,801 U.S. Law Enforcement, Fire and EMS Workers
BOCA RATON, Fla. – January 18, 2024 – Considerable attention has focused on burnout and mental health of physicians and nurses on the frontline during the COVID-19 pandemic. First responders – law enforcement personnel, firefighters and emergency medical service (EMS) providers, also experienced increased levels of stress, anxiety and depression due to job-related pressures associated with the pandemic.
Given their exposure to work-related stress during this time, first responders may have been at considerable risk of developing problematic substance use. However, little is known about the factors associated with first responder drug and alcohol use during the pandemic.
A study by Florida Atlantic University and collaborators used a nationwide online survey to assess the experiences of 2,801 first responders serving in police departments, fire stations and EMS agencies during the early stages of COVID-19 (late 2020 to early 2021). Researchers examined the mediating impact of burnout on the associations between work pressure, workplace support strategies, COVID-related support strategies and problematic substance use.

AMA: NEW PRIOR AUTHORIZATION REGULATION TO BENEFIT PATIENTS AND PHYSICIANS
January 17, 2024 – “The American Medical Association (AMA) applauds Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Administrator Brooks-LaSure for heeding patients and the physician community in a final rule that makes important reforms in government-regulated health plans’ prior authorization programs for medical services.
“Today’s final rule requires impacted plans to support an electronic prior authorization process that is embedded within physicians’ electronic health records, bringing much-needed automation and efficiency to the current time-consuming, manual workflow. The AMA also appreciates that the rule will significantly enhance transparency around prior authorization by requiring specific denial reasons and public reporting of program metrics as well as requiring that prior authorization information be available to patients to help them become more informed decision makers.

NIH-DEVELOPED HIV ANTIBODIES PROTECT ANIMALS IN PROOF-OF-CONCEPT STUDY
January 17, 2024 – Three different HIV antibodies each independently protected monkeys from acquiring simian-HIV (SHIV) in a placebo-controlled proof-of-concept study intended to inform development of a preventive HIV vaccine for people. The antibodies—a human broadly neutralizing antibody and two antibodies isolated from previously vaccinated monkeys—target the fusion peptide, a site on an HIV surface protein that helps the virus fuse with and enter cells. The study, published in Science Translational Medicine, was led by the Vaccine Research Center (VRC) at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of the National Institutes of Health.
Antibodies that target the fusion peptide can neutralize diverse strains of HIV in vitro, that is, in a test tube or culture dish outside of a living organism. The NIAID VRC isolated a fusion peptide-directed human antibody, called VRC34.01, from a person living with HIV who donated blood samples for research. They also isolated two antibodies from rhesus macaques—a species of monkey with immune systems like humans’—who previously had received a vaccine regimen designed to generate fusion peptide-directed antibodies. Demonstrating that these antibodies protect animals would validate the fusion peptide as a target for human vaccine design. SHIV challenge—administering an infective dose of SHIV—to rhesus macaques is a widely used animal model for assessing the performance of HIV antibodies and vaccines.
