MIND-BODY MEDICINE CLINICALLY PROVEN TO HELP TREAT ANXIETY AND DEPRESSION IN CANCER SURVIVORS
New $125M Memorial Cancer Institute designed with mindful spaces and a soothing environment to boost patients’ recovery and healing
September 27, 2023 –A recent report in the Journal of Clinical Oncology reveals that global cancer rates are on the rise, but there’s a silver lining. Survival rates are steadily improving. By 2040, it’s estimated that approximately 26 million people in the United States will have surpassed the critical five-year milestone in their cancer journey. However, the mental well-being of this growing community of cancer survivors is emerging as a prominent concern. To offer relief, a new set of national guidelines recommends that cancer patients use mind-body techniques to ease anxiety and depression during and after treatment as part of integrative medical approach to care.
One of the authors of this important article is Ashwin Mehta, MD, Medical Director of Memorial Healthcare System’s Integrative Medicine program who leads Memorial Cancer Institute’s Integrative Cancer Survivorship Program. He also formed part of the Society for Integrative Oncology (SIO) and the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) expert panel who created these clinical practice guidelines based on a summary of scientific research and clinical trials. These experts encourage the use of mindfulness techniques and other integrative therapies to help adults dealing with cancer manage their feelings of anxiety and depression. Their detailed set of guidelines, which can be found in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, carefully describe how well techniques like yoga, relaxation exercises, hypnosis, acupuncture, and music therapy, work in reducing anxiety and depression during cancer treatment.

October 2, 2023 – A new study, led by radiation oncology physicists at Miami Cancer Institute, part of Baptist Health South Florida, displayed positive results using intracranial stereotactic radiosurgery, also known as SRS, for an MR-guided radiotherapy system. The study, ‘Commissioning Intracranial Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS) for an MR-guided Radiotherapy (MRgRT) system: MR-RT Localization and Dosimetric End-to-End Validation’ published in the International Journal of Radiation Oncology – Biology – Physics (IJROBP),highlights positive accuracy through an end-to-end hidden target test to quantify the imaging, planning, and delivery coincidence of an MR Linac system, ViewRay MRIdian.
Kathryn Mittauer, Ph.D., lead physicist for the MR-guided radiation therapy program with Miami Cancer Institute, was the first author of this study. Mittauer explains the team developed an in-house MR head phantom to simulate stereotactic radiosurgery for brain tumors. Specifically, the study simulated intracranial spherical targets, an irregularly shaped target, and a target abutting brainstem.

NEW RESEARCH FROM SYLVESTER CANCER STRIVES TO HELP RADIATION ONCOLOGISTS, OTHER CLINICIANS ANSWER CRITICAL QUESTION
Sylvester researchers, Eric Mellon, MD, PhD (left,) and Kaylie Cullison, an MD/PhD student who is conducting her PhD research in Dr. Mellon’s laboratory, used sophisticated analytical and machine learning tools, including a linear fitting model to test their prediction theory on a prospective cohort of glioblastoma patients undergoing chemoradiation for their cancers. Photo by Sylvester
SEPTEMBER 29, 2023 – Is it true progression or pseudoprogression in tumor growth?
That’s the critical question for radiation and medical oncologists treating patients with glioblastoma, the most common and aggressive form of brain cancer. Distinguishing between these types of progression is vitally important for treatment management.
“Knowing if it’s true progression, indicative of a poor response to treatment, or pseudoprogression, a favorable response that may look worse due to swelling or tumor necrosis, is essential for clinicians,” said Eric Mellon, MD, PhD, a radiation oncologist and researcher with Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. “That knowledge can guide us in adjusting current treatment in real time.”

CLEVELAND CLINIC RESEARCHERS DEVELOP NEW MODEL FOR PRIORITIZING LUNG TRANSPLANT CANDIDATES
Study shows new approach could more accurately reflect which patients urgently need a transplant and reduce deaths
September 29, 2023 – A team from Cleveland Clinic has developed a new model for prioritizing patients waiting for a lung transplant, aimed at improving outcomes and reducing deaths among those in need of donor lungs. The new method offers an improved strategy for organ allocation by taking into account how the time a patient has spent on the waiting list could impact the severity of their disease and the urgency of their need for a transplant.
The results of a study looking at this new method were published today in The American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.
Currently, lung transplant candidates are ranked by a scoring equation called the Composite Allocation Score (CAS). Candidates are assigned a number based on factors including how stable they are while waiting, chances of survival after receiving a new organ, and how easily they can be matched for available organs. Those with the highest scores are given priority and offered donor lungs first. However, the scores are based on tests given twice a year at transplant centers. That means that unless a patient’s health suddenly and drastically changes, their score will remain the same for at least six months.

“Thanks to this grant, we’ve been able to get CPR and Basic Life Support training and certifications for our staff, key volunteers and group leaders,” Brooks said. “Every year, more than 25,000 people come to the Compass Center because it’s a supportive and safe place to be – having this training makes us an even safer place in cases of cardiac emergency.”

EXPERIENCE HOW THE ARTS CAN IMPROVE YOUR BRAIN HEALTH IN OCTOBER
Palm Health Foundation to offer free events during its October 2023 Train the Brain campaign to show how creative and expressive art experiences can change the brain, body, and behavior, leading to better overall health.
Palm Beach County, FL–Palm Health Foundation’s seventh annual Train the Brain community health campaign kicks off on October 1, 2023, with the theme, “Advancing Wellness Through the Neuroarts.” Three free community events will demonstrate the connections between the brain, body, and behavior while celebrating Palm Beach County’s local arts and culture community. The enlightening and interactive events include an art show and symposium demonstrating how local students are connecting to their mental and emotional wellness through art expression, , a lunch and learn about the impact of art in public places on community wellness, and a sing-along revealing how our brains react to music.
The goal of Train the Brain is to help Palm Beach County residents understand that taking care of the brain is just as important as taking care of the body. By sharing experiences in the Neuroarts—the study of how the brain and body respond to art—Palm Health Foundation is demonstrating how accessible this form of self-care can be to everyone.
“The arts are all around us, especially in a community as culturally rich as Palm Beach County,” said Patrick McNamara, president and CEO of Palm Health Foundation. “The beautiful imagery in our museums and street art, and the music presented on local stages and in our churches bring us joy. We’re making the connection to how the arts can benefit our health and wellness by providing free, first-hand experiences to learn about their impact on our brains, bodies, and the wellbeing of our community.”

MAYO CLINIC’S AI INNOVATION INSPIRES HOPE IN EARLY DETECTION OF PANCREATIC CANCER
Algorithm seeks to address ‘last-mile’ barrier by identifying disease when cure still possible
October 2, 2023 – ROCHESTER, Minn. — Estimated to become the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the U.S. by 2030, pancreatic cancer has a grim prognosis with nearly 70% of patients facing mortality within the first year of diagnosis. Unfortunately, 40% of small pancreatic cancers elude detection on CT scans until they’ve advanced to an incurable stage.
This creates a critical “last-mile” barrier for early detection efforts where, in most patients — including those high-risk subjects undergoing active screening — imaging detects the cancer at a stage when a cure is unlikely. This makes imaging the final frontier in the quest for early cancer detection.
In a recent breakthrough, Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Cancer Center researchers used the world’s most extensive imaging dataset to build a versatile artificial intelligence (AI) model that has shown the potential for autonomous detection of pancreatic cancer on standard CTs when surgical intervention can still promise a cure.

DIGITAL AUTISM SCREENING TOOL SHOWS PROMISE IN NIH-FUNDED STUDY
Improving accuracy of screening would reduce disparities in early diagnosis and intervention.
October 2, 2023 – A tablet-based screening application for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) may improve early detection, suggests a study funded by the National Institutes of Health. Early detection is critical for access to early interventions that can have major long-term positive effects on symptoms and later skills. The app showed 87.8% sensitivity for detecting ASD, meaning it correctly identified most children with the condition. Its specificity—the percentage of children without ASD who screened negative—was 80.8%. By accurately identifying toddlers who warrant further investigation for ASD, the app may help healthcare providers ensure that children and families receive the support they need.
Healthcare providers typically screen toddlers for ASD using a parent questionnaire. However, studies have found that the accuracy of such questionnaires tends to be lower in primary care settings compared to research settings, particularly among girls and children of color. This can widen disparities in early diagnosis and intervention.

SMALL STUDY IDENTIFIES BRAIN REGION ASSOCIATED WITH BREATHING FAILURE FOLLOWING SEIZURES
Researchers identified a site in the amygdala critical to breathing loss following a seizure. The purple and blue region represents a probability map of the region linked to persistent apnea, based on data from 20 subjects with uncontrolled epilepsy. Dlouhy lab, University of Iowa
Seizure activity in the amygdala may help explain sudden unexpected death in epilepsy.
OCTOBER 3, 2023 – A research team supported by the National Institutes of Health has identified a part of the brain that may be associated with breathing failure following a seizure in people with severe epilepsy that cannot be controlled with medication. The condition, known as sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP), is the leading cause of death in this patient population. The new findings, by researchers at the University of Iowa, Iowa City, and published in JCI Insight, may play a critical role in understanding SUDEP, for which causes are not well-explained.
Most cases of SUDEP are thought to be due to loss of breathing that occurs after a seizure ends, known as postictal apnea. The study found that individuals who experience postictal apnea lose a sense of “air hunger” – the primal urge to breathe – or alarm, suggesting that the brain may be unable to detect and respond to rising carbon dioxide (CO2) levels in the blood when the apnea occurs.
