UPDATED NEWS INFORMATION FROM THE LAST THREE DAYS IN SOUTH FLORIDA |
Coming Soon: VITAS Healthcare Hospice Care in Pinellas County
Beginning Nov. 3, residents of Pinellas County will have improved access to quality end-of-life care through VITAS Healthcare, the nation’s leading hospice provider. Florida’s most chosen provider, VITAS will accept hospice-eligible referrals for patients in Clearwater, St. Petersburg, Tarpon Springs and surrounding communities.
According to research, only 61% of Medicare decedents in Florida access the Medicare Hospice Benefit—meaning many patients and families miss out on the medical, emotional and spiritual support available near the end of life.
VITAS is working to close this gap by expanding access to hospice services along Florida’s west-central coast. Care teams work closely with patients, families, healthcare professionals and community partners to ensure comfort, dignity and support at every stage of a serious illness.

New Cleveland Clinic Research Finds Up to 5% of Americans Carry Genetic Mutations Associated with Cancer Risk
Results highlight the importance of routine cancer screenings, suggest genetic testing should go beyond high-risk groups
October 27, 2025 – New Cleveland Clinic research reveals that up to 5% of Americans – approximately 17 million people – carry genetic mutations or “variants” linked to increased cancer susceptibility, regardless of risk factors like personal or family cancer history.

The research team, led by Joshua Arbesman, M.D., and Ying Ni, Ph.D., analyzed health records and genetic sequencing data from over 400,000 participants in the National Institute of Health’s All of Us Research Program, the country’s largest and most comprehensive genetic and healthcare database.

GeoVax Welcomes New IDSA Guidance Highlighting Need for Tailored COVID-19 Vaccines for Immunocompromised Patients
GEO-CM04S1 Designed to Deliver Broader, More Durable Protection for the 40 Million Americans Left Vulnerable by Limited Effectiveness of Current Vaccines
ATLANTA, GA – October 28, 2025 – GeoVax Labs, Inc. (Nasdaq: GOVX), a clinical-stage biotechnology company developing multi-antigen vaccines and immunotherapies for infectious diseases and cancer, today highlighted the recently issued Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) guidelines recommending immediate and prioritized COVID-19 vaccination for immunocompromised individuals. The new guidelines underscore the significant unmet need in this population – one that remains at heightened risk of severe illness despite widespread vaccine availability – and confirms what clinicians, patients and policymakers have long recognized: over 40 million Americans with weakened immune systems remain at heightened risk of severe COVID-19 illness and are underserved by existing vaccines.
The IDSA guidance, published October 17, 2025, concludes that current COVID-19 vaccines offer moderate protection in immunocompromised patients, with effectiveness against hospitalization ranging from 33% to 56% and reduced – but still present – protection against critical illness and mortality. However, responses remain attenuated and short-lived, with most studies showing waning effectiveness within two months of vaccination.

Mayo Clinic discovery of breast cancer treatment resistance can lead to new hope for some
October 28, 2025- — Mayo Clinic researchers have discovered a key reason why certain breast cancers might not respond to an important new class of therapeutics called antibody drug conjugates (ADCs). These treatments pair an antibody that targets cancer cells with a strong chemotherapy drug. For many patients with human epidermal growth factor receptor 2-positive (HER2+) breast cancers, ADCs such as trastuzumab deruxtecan (T-DXd) have dramatically improved outcomes.
“While T-DXd has shown remarkable results for many patients, it hasn’t worked for everyone with advanced HER2+ breast cancer,” says Peter Lucas, M.D., Ph.D., vice chair for research in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology at Mayo Clinic and co-senior author of the study, published in Nature Cancer. “This indicates that some tumors have built-in resistant mechanisms that prevent the drug from doing its job.”

HSS Investigators Address the Impact of Social Determinants of Health and Perception of Discrimination on Health Outcomes in People with Rheumatologic Diseases
October 27 2025 – Investigators from Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) presented provocative evidence showing how social determinants of health (SDOH) and perceived discrimination influence the care and outcomes of people with rheumatologic diseases, such as lupus, and demonstrated how healthcare providers can screen for SDOH during patient encounters. They made these presentations at ACR Convergence 2025, the annual meeting of the American College of Rheumatology, held in Chicago from October 24-29.
“Social determinants of health — such as food insecurity, low health literacy, limited language proficiency, and limited education — are responsible for more than 70 percent of adverse health outcomes and drive inequities in care,” explained Jillian Rose-Smith, PhD, MPH, MSW, Vice President and Chief Equity Officer at HSS. “Rheumatologic conditions are unpredictable and unrelenting. If a patient’s physician gave them an expensive biologic medication, for example, treatment will fail if the patient doesn’t have a refrigerator to keep it in. That’s why it’s so important for practice guidelines to align with patients’ lived experiences.”
