NCH and Nicklaus Children’s Announce Major Plans to Expand Care for Women and Children
Naples, FL., January 20, 2026 – Naples Comprehensive Health (NCH) and Nicklaus Children’s Hospital today announced a major expansion of care for women and children in Southwest Florida, made possible by a visionary gift from Bill and Julia Van Domelen Foundation. This investment will establish the Van Domelen Institute for Women and Children and support construction of the Van Domelen Pavilion for Women and Children on the NCH North Hospital campus.
Since opening its doors in 1956 and welcoming its first baby just two days later, NCH has grown alongside Southwest Florida, caring for generations. Today, as our region has experienced unprecedented growth and complexity in healthcare needs, we are launching a bold initiative because families deserve the very best care close to home.
Collier County is home to more than 65,000 children, with the pediatric population projected to grow another four percent in five years. Broward Health Honors Life and Legacy of Martin Luther King Jr.
January 19, 2026 – Broward Health honors the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his enduring message of unity, respect and uplifting others.
During a 1968 sermon, Dr. King shared the now-iconic words, “Everybody can be great, because everybody can serve.” The message remains a powerful reminder that greatness is defined by our service to others.
Whether through compassionate care, teamwork or the small moments that make a difference, each of us can carry forward Dr. King’s legacy of service every day.

The Jim Moran Foundation Awards 25th Anniversary Grant of $500,000 to Holy Cross Health Foundation
January 20, 2026 – In recognition of The Jim Moran Foundation’s 25th anniversary, the organization has awarded a $500,000 grant to the Holy Cross Health Foundation.
The funds will support the design and construction of the Holy Cross Community
Pharmacy – Oakland Park, which will provide pharmacy services, including home delivery, to the surrounding community. The pharmacy will be located in the Holy Cross Health Family Health Center on the first floor of the Holy Cross Medical Plaza, 5601 N. Dixie Hwy. in Oakland Park.
“My husband’s relationship with Holy Cross began in the 1970s, followed by his life-saving open-heart surgery in 1988,” said Jan Moran, Chairman and President of The Jim Moran Foundation. “Knowing their unwavering commitment to good health and well-being for all, we are happy to be continuing our partnership through Jim’s foundation.”
To recognize its 25th Anniversary, The Foundation reached beyond its traditional funding guidelines with grants currently totaling almost $20 million. Final anniversary grants will be announced in early 2026.
Five years ago, as a part of its 20th Anniversary giving, The Jim Moran Foundation awarded a $1 million grant to help establish the Holy Cross Health Family Health Center to address the diverse needs of the local community and serve as a centralized hub for a wide array of health care services for patients of all ages, as well as job-readiness programs for adults.

Tampa General Hospital Cancer Institute Welcomes Palm Beach County Breast Surgeon Dr. Donna H. Kleban
Respected longtime Palm Beach County-based surgeon joins TGH Cancer Institute’s nationally acclaimed team in the Palm Beaches and on the Treasure Coast.
January 22, 2026 – Tampa General Hospital (TGH) Cancer Institute welcomes respected and highly experienced, board-certified breast surgeon Donna H. Kleban, MD, FACS, to its practice, effective January 1.
Kleban has practiced in Palm Beach County for more than 30 years. She specializes in treating patients with benign and malignant breast disease, utilizing a variety of techniques, including cryoablation of breast tumors, in-office biopsies under mammogram and ultrasound imaging, genetic testing, high-risk surveillance, intraoperative radiation therapy, and oncoplastic surgery.
“Dr. Kleban is an accomplished surgeon with extensive experience serving patients in Palm Beach County,” said Dr. Robert Scoma, a thoracic surgical oncologist in West Palm Beach and Wellington who leads TGH Cancer Institute. “Her depth of knowledge will help expand the revolutionary care we provide our patients. We are thrilled to have her join our practice.”
Kleban earned her medical degree with honors from the University of Brussels Medical School in Brussels, Belgium. She completed her general surgery residency at Beth Israel Medical Center and Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, where she held the distinction of serving as chief resident in surgery and as an instructor in surgery.
She has served as a principal investigator for multiple research clinical trials for breast cancer. These include a scanning system to detect malignancy in mammography in patients age 50 and younger, and the evaluation of cryo-assisted localization (CAL) versus needle-wire localization (NWL) for breast lumpectomy.

January 21, 2026 — Researchers at FIU are advancing a personalized approach to cancer treatment that is showing increasingly promising results for patients with hard-to-treat disease, supported by new philanthropic investment that is helping expand the science behind the work.
A recent gift from the Tyler Trent Foundation is accelerating research led by Diana Azzam, whose lab is pioneering functional precision medicine — an emerging strategy that identifies the most effective therapies by testing large libraries of drugs directly on living tumor cells from individual patients.
The support comes as preliminary findings from the next phase of Azzam’s clinical research indicate even stronger responses than those observed in her original study, reinforcing the potential of drug sensitivity testing to guide treatment decisions when standard approaches fail.
“Cancer remains one of the leading causes of death, and many patients eventually run out of effective treatment options,” Azzam said. “What we’re seeing in our latest work suggests that functional testing can reveal opportunities that traditional methods may miss.”

Op-Ed: We Must Uphold the Systems Protecting Our Children: Invest Now, Save Later

January 21, 2026- In the face of federal funding uncertainty that has plagued our nation’s social services sector over the last year, our children’s health was recently on the line when the federal government wiped out $2 billion in addiction and mental health grants and then rolled back the decision less than 24 hours later.
As the CEO of a local nonprofit agency that operates programs underwritten by a variety of funding streams and grants, including SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration), we must not turn our backs on the support services we are providing our children: they are our nation’s future.
At Center for Child Counseling, the federal funding we receive allows us to partner with Florida State University to support children and families in Palm Beach County. We address the unmet mental/behavioral and social services needs of children, adolescents, and families who have experienced trauma.
The funded project helps build community capacity to provide trauma-informed care in child-serving systems through training and consultation for system providers, professionals, and caregivers. We are able to focus on communities in Palm Beach County where there are significant numbers of children and families facing adversity and trauma and critical gaps in resources, including trauma-informed care and treatment.

New CT imaging oral contrast agent improves visualization of bowel anatomy, clinical trial data show

January 20, 2026- In a new pilot feasibility study, researchers from Mayo Clinic, the University of Washington School of Medicine, the University of California San Francisco, and Nextrast Inc. found that a new imaging oral agent, also known as a “contrast agent,” helps radiologists better see bowel structures and disease in CT imaging when compared with the current oral contrast agents.
The introduction of a new oral contrast agent for CT imaging addresses common challenges in the diagnosis of bowel diseases, says by Joel Fletcher, M.D., lead author on the study and medical director of the Mayo Clinic CT Clinical Innovation Center. “The new oral contrast agent,” he explains, “is ingested by patients prior to CT imaging and helps detect pathologies within and outside of the bowel wall in ways current imaging agents do not.”
“We carefully designed this new class of oral contrast agent to overcome many of the diagnostic shortcomings of existing contrast agents for a broad range of diseases,” says Benjamin Yeh, M.D., a co-author on the study, radiologist at the University of California at San Francisco and co-founder of Nextrast, which created the new agent. “The Clinical Phase 2 results confirm that our dark agent can reveal previously impossible-to-detect findings, including very small bowel tumors and subtle inflammatory conditions that are often missed with conventional agents at CT.”
In their paper, the authors report findings that suggest this new agent significantly improves visualization of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) or cancer within the abdomen, and may provide earlier and more confident diagnoses.
The study compared CT scans of 32 patients with the dark borosilicate oral contrast agent and scans with conventional water or iodine-based oral contrast agents, to look at anatomical structures and disease presence.

Lee Health Seeks Community Input Through New Health Survey to Strengthen Care Across Southwest Florida
Jan. 20, 2026 — Lee Health has launched a community health survey for residents of Southwest Florida to enhance care and address patient needs most effectively across Charlotte, Collier, Glades, Hendry and Lee Counties.
Lee Health is sharing the survey link through communication with the community, asking for support from local media, and utilizing social media to share the opportunity. Community partners are also sharing with their networks. This ensures as many community members as possible can complete the survey and be heard. The survey is open to everyone in the community, including non-patients, staff, local businesses and the public.
“At Lee Health, we believe a healthy community starts with listening to the people we serve and working together to remove barriers to care,” said Lee Health’s chief community health and impact officer, Dr. Selynto Anderson. “This survey gives our neighbors across Southwest Florida and surrounding communities a meaningful opportunity to share their experiences and priorities. New Method Predicts Asthma Attacks Up to Five Years in Advance
January 19, 2026 – Researchers at Mass General Brigham and Karolinska Institutet have identified a new method to predict asthma exacerbations with a high degree of accuracy. The study is published in Nature Communications.
Asthma is one of the world’s most common chronic diseases, affecting over 500 million people. Asthma exacerbations–commonly known as asthma attacks–are a major cause of disease morbidity and healthcare costs. Despite the prevalence of asthma, clinicians currently lack reliable biomarkers to identify which patients are at high risk for future attacks. Current methods often fail to distinguish between stable patients and those prone to severe exacerbations.
The study analysed data from three large asthma cohorts totalling over 2,500 participants, backed by decades of electronic medical records. Researchers used a high throughput approach called metabolomics to measures small molecules in the blood of individuals with asthma. They identified an important relationship between two classes of metabolites, sphingolipids and steroids, and asthma control. Specifically, they identified that sphingolipid to steroid ratios could predict exacerbation risk over a five-year period. In some cases, the model could differentiate the time-to-first exacerbation between high- and low-risk groups by nearly a full year.

January 21, 2026 – Access to treatment for leprosy is essential to global efforts to eliminate leprosy, says the World Health Organization (WHO) ahead of World Leprosy Day, to be observed on 25 January.
Leprosy is an infectious disease caused by a type of bacteria, Mycobacterium leprae, and is one of the oldest diseases known to humanity. The disease predominantly affects the skin and peripheral nerves. Left untreated, the disease may cause progressive and permanent disabilities and causes stigma and social isolation However, the disease can be cured with multidrug therapy (MDT).
Efforts to eliminate leprosy have been leading to reductions in the number of new cases in many areas; of the 188 countries, areas or territories that submitted data in 2024, 55 reported zero cases. But still 172 717 new cases were detected worldwide and reported to WHO in the same year.
Many partners, including pharmaceutical companies such as Novartis, have been strong supporters of efforts to eliminate leprosy. WHO has collaborated with Novartis since 2000 to provide MDT and clofazimine, free of cost, to all leprosy patients worldwide. This partnership remains one of the most sustained pharmaceutical donation programmes in global health.

FDA Takes Steps to Improve Gluten Ingredient Disclosure in Foods
January 21, 2026- Today, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a Request for Information (RFI) regarding labeling and preventing cross-contact of gluten in packaged food. The FDA is taking this action as a first step to improve transparency in disclosures of ingredients that impact certain health conditions, such as gluten for those with celiac disease, and other established food allergens.
“Today, we advance the MAHA Strategy’s directive by demanding radical transparency in packaged food ingredients that affect health conditions and diet-related allergies,” Health and Human Services Secretary Robert Kennedy Jr. said. “Americans deserve clear, reliable information about what’s in their food and how it’s made. Public input calling for honest labeling will protect consumers, prevent harm, and Make America Healthy Again.”
The agency is seeking information on adverse reactions due to “ingredients of interest” (i.e., non-wheat gluten containing grains (GCGs) which are rye and barley, and oats due to cross-contact with GCGs) and on labeling issues or concerns with identifying these “ingredients of interest” on packaged food products in the U.S.
“People with celiac disease or gluten sensitivities have had to tiptoe around food, and are often forced to guess about their food options,” said FDA Commissioner Marty Makary, M.D., M.P.H. “We encourage all stakeholders to share their experiences and data to help us develop policies that will better protect Americans and support healthy food choices.”

Advancing Cancer Care Through Precision Medicine
