The Joshua Kushner and Karlie Kloss Foundation Gives $2.5 Million to Open the Karlie Kloss Center for Maternal Health at The Women’s Hospital at Jackson Memorial Medical Center
On August 18, 2026, The Women’s Hospital at Jackson Memorial Medical Center, in partnership with Jackson Health Foundation, celebrated the Karlie Kloss Center for Maternal Health, a newly renovated space designed to provide pregnant patients across South Florida with timely, specialized obstetrical care in a modern, welcoming, and supportive environment. The Center includes a newly renovated Obstetric Emergency Room (OB-ER) and was made possible through a philanthropic gift from supermodel, entrepreneur, philanthropist, and former patient Karlie Kloss and her husband, Joshua Kushner.
The reimagined Karlie Kloss Center for Maternal Health is designed around the needs of pregnant patients and families, particularly during urgent and vulnerable moments of pregnancy. It features updated patient rooms, enhanced clinical spaces, and an improved clinical environment, designed to support timely, specialized care supporting over 4,300 babies and families a year with greater comfort, privacy, and dignity throughout their experience.
Kloss, who delivered her children at The Women’s Hospital at Jackson Memorial, chose to support the renovation as a way to give back to the health system that cared for her family, while helping ensure future generations of mothers receive exceptional care in an environment that reflects the world-class expertise of Jackson’s maternity teams.

Gift Establishes the Baptist Health Innovations Collaborative Innovation Fund to Accelerate Early-Stage Solutions and Strategic Partnerships
August 19, 2026 – Baptist Health Foundation announced a $2 million gift from the Argosy Foundation to establish the Baptist Health Innovations Collaborative Innovation Fund, a new philanthropic initiative designed to accelerate promising healthcare innovations and expand strategic collaborations that improve patient care and community health. The gift builds upon the Argosy Foundation’s longstanding support of Baptist Health Innovations and its commitment to advancing practical, patient-centered solutions in healthcare.

Study: Younger Adults With Lung Cancer More Likely to Have Targetable Genetic Changes, Study Finds
Large international analysis suggests age may influence lung cancer biology and could help guide more personalized treatment strategies
MIAMI – Aug. 20, 2026– Younger adults with non-small cell lung cancer are significantly more likely than older patients to have genetic alterations that can be matched with targeted therapies, according to a large international study led in part by researchers at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center part of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. The findings will be presented Sept. 14, in Seoul, Republic of Korea, at the 2026 World Conference on Lung Cancer.
Analyzing genomic and immune data from 14,246 patients, researchers from Sylvester, Labcorp and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute found nearly 58% of younger patients had guideline-recommended actionable alterations, compared with about 45% of patients age 55 and older, suggesting age may be an important factor in understanding tumor biology and tailoring treatment.

ACCESS Study Points to Broader Stem Cell Donor Options for Blood Cancer Patients
MIAMI – Aug. 20, 2026 – Blood cancer patients who cannot find a closely matched stem cell donor may have more transplant options than previously thought. New findings from the ACCESS trial suggest carefully selected younger donors with greater genetic mismatches can produce encouraging outcomes, potentially widening access to a potentially lifesaving transplant.
For decades, stem cell transplantation has operated under a simple rule: the closer the donor match, the better. Patients with leukemia, lymphoma, myelodysplastic syndromes and other blood cancers often faced an extensive search for a donor whose immune system markers aligned as closely as possible with their own.

August 19, 2026– Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center has opened a newly renovated Same-Day Surgery Unit, offering eligible patients undergoing select orthopedic and colorectal procedures the opportunity to return home the same day as their surgery while receiving the same high-quality care patients have come to expect.
The specialized nine-bed unit is designed to support patients recovering from procedures such as shoulder, knee, and hip replacements, colorectal, hernia, appendectomy, cholecystectomy and other general surgeries. Following surgery, patients recover in a quiet, comfortable environment where they are closely monitored by a dedicated care team before being discharged home, typically within four to six hours.

He Told His Mom He Just Had a Tummy Ache, but the Diagnosis Was Far More Serious
August 21, 2026 – John, 11, was enjoying the summer break with his family and twin brother, Raymond, when he started to feel his stomach hurting and it would not go away. What initially seemed to be something minor like constipation turned into an emergency when his mother noticed his eyes were bright yellow while swimming with him in the backyard pool. The pain was so severe that John, who typically does not like to go to the doctors, asked his mom to take him immediately.
Living in Palm Beach County, John’s family rushed to the nearest ER where the medical team explained his liver was enlarged and would need further specialized care. At that point, John was rushed via LifeFlight ambulance to Nicklaus Children’s Hospital Miami.

HCA Florida Healthcare marks construction milestone for new emergency room in western Marion County
The $17 million facility, next to the entrance of the On Top of the World community and the Canopy Oak Center, will serve communities along the SR 200 corridor and western Marion County.
August 21, 2026 – HCA Florida Healthcare marked an important milestone in the construction of HCA Florida ER, its newest freestanding emergency room in Marion County, with a beam-signing ceremony on Aug. 21.
Colleagues from HCA Florida West Marion Hospital, HCA Florida Ocala Hospital, our other nearby freestanding emergency rooms, and members of the hospitals’ Board of Trustees participated in the beam-signing along with representatives of the Gainesville-based construction firm CPPI, which is building the $17 million facility. Traditionally, a beam-signing is a ceremonial event marking the placement of the final or highest structural beam.

Mayo Clinic study estimates cancer risk in patients with pancreatic cysts, advancing early detection
AUGUST 20, 2026 — Mayo Clinic researchers have estimated the risk that pancreatic cysts with worrisome or high-risk features will progress to pancreatic cancer or advanced precancerous changes within three years. The findings, published in Gastroenterology, could help physicians and patients better assess risk and make more informed decisions about whether to monitor a cyst or consider surgery.
The prospective study found that risk increased with the number of worrisome features, or findings that the cyst needs closer monitoring. Patients whose cysts had one worrisome feature had about a 2% chance of developing pancreatic cancer or advanced precancerous changes within three years. The risk rose to 4% for those with two worrisome features and 18% for those with three or more.

Mayo Clinic AI model helps clinicians detect heart obstruction using routine ultrasound images
AUGUST 19, 2026 — Mayo Clinic researchers have developed and externally validated an artificial intelligence (AI) model that can identify a potentially significant heart obstruction from routine ultrasound videos without relying on specialized Doppler imaging. The technology could help clinicians flag patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) who may need additional testing, particularly in settings where specialized echocardiography expertise is limited. Study findings are published in Circulation: Cardiovascular Imaging.
HCM is a genetic condition that causes the heart muscle to become abnormally thick. About two-thirds of these patients develop left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) obstruction, which restricts blood leaving the heart, causing symptoms such as chest pain and shortness of breath with exertion or when lying flat. Knowing which patients develop LVOT obstruction is important because it influences treatment decisions and long-term management for patients with HCM.

Healthcare Network Awarded $366,000 Grant from the Naples Children Foundation to Expand Children’s Behavioral Health Workforce
Aug. 19, 2026 – Healthcare Network has received $366,000 from the Naples Children Foundation (NCF), founders of the Naples Winter Wine Festival, to strengthen children’s behavioral health workforce by supporting two full-time post-master’s registered behavioral health clinicians over the next two years.
Through this grant, Healthcare Network will address some of the biggest barriers that keep aspiring behavioral health professionals from pursuing a career in mental health counseling or social work such as providing paid registered internships and offering an accessible way to obtain supervised clinical experience required for licensure. In addition to supporting intern salaries, the funding covers clinical supervision, licensure exam preparation, examination fees, and other professional development resources that help emerging mental health counselors and social workers successfully transition into fully licensed behavioral health providers.

Pediatric neurologist Dr. John Gaitanis to lead NIH’s Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development
August 21, 2026 – National Institutes of Health (NIH) Director Jay Bhattacharya, M.D., Ph.D., announced the selection of John Gaitanis, M.D., as director of NIH’s Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD). Dr. Gaitanis is set to begin his role on August 23, 2026.
As NICHD director, Dr. Gaitanis will shepherd the investment of NICHD’s approximately $1.7 billion annual budget, facilitating research to advance maternal, gynecologic, and child health, as well as the health of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. He will lead a staff of about 1,100 who either conduct research at NICHD or support some of the institute’s approximately 2,300 research grants and projects at organizations throughout the United States and internationally.

August 3, 2026 – Promise Fund, a South Florida-based nonprofit dedicated to increasing survivorship from breast and cervical cancer, will host free Mammography Screening Days on the following dates:
August 28, 2026 at Consulado de Guatemala, 1926 10th Ave N #104, Lake Worth Beach, FL, 33461 from 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.
This screening event is presented in partnership with Florida Mobile Mammography and Florida Health.

The three-day event will take place Sept. 4-6 at Baptist Health IcePlex. The weekend’s programming will be highlighted by the Matthew Tkachuk Cup presented by Baptist Health, featuring a Boys AAA (Tier 1) and Girls AA (Tier 2) tournament through the weekend.
