ACHE OF SOUTH FLORIDA MEMBER SPOTLIGHT JULY 2023: PETER CHRISTIAANS

Peter Christiaans is quick to point out that ACHE – the American College of Healthcare Executives – is not what one might expect by looking at its name. “As you look at the broad membership, you’ll see that it is not just all hospital administrators; it’s quite diverse. It extends to vendors, suppliers and other industries that have touchpoints in healthcare and have an interest professionally to improve the field.” To realize the truth of that statement, one just has to examine Christiaans’ professional background.

Christiaans is a director at Huron Consulting Group, a management consulting firm that offers services to multiple industries, including healthcare, life sciences, commercial, and higher education. “I’ve been consulting since college,” he said, commenting that his previous experience included working at the Big Four: Arthur Andersen, KPMG, and Deloitte. Christiaans stated that all of it had been consulting work in different industries doing different tasks, “but the commonality that ties them all together is that I’ve been in what’s called the ERP – or enterprise resource planning – state. What that means is that for most of my career I’ve worked with different clients to implement software for their human capital, their financials, and their supply chain.”

With consulting as his background, why was Christiaans interested in joining ACHE? He explained that when he was in college, he completed his MBA in healthcare administration at the University of Miami. “I did a fair amount of work while I was going through graduate school in different departments at the University of Miami’s Medical Campus. The administrator for the Mailman Center for Child Development where I was working at the time was a member of ACHE. He was a fellow and he introduced me to the organization.”

CARMEL BARRAU, MD, TAKES THE HELM AS DADE COUNTY MEDICAL ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT

Newly installed president of DCMA, Carmel Barrau M.D., FACP, first Haitian-American to be appointed to the Board of Medicine of Florida, is a strong proponent of organized medicine. He explains why.

“As physicians we are trained and practice within the clinical quality guidelines of patient care delivery. However, we need to be participating members in medical associations in order to confer among peers, keep abreast of technology, learn about the business side of medicine (finance, legal, AI, practice models and other pragmatic decisions to weigh) and be proactive in political issues relating to health care,” he said.

Dr. Barrau is Co-founder of the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine at Florida International University, where he also chairs the Dean’s Advisory Council for the College and also is a board member of the FIU Foundation. He earned his undergraduate and medical degrees from State University School of Medicine Port-au-Prince, Haiti. He completed his internship and residency at the University of Miami, Jackson Memorial Hospital, and received numerous commendations throughout his career. He has been an active voice in the Miami Mecca of health care for the past 30 years serving as a leader and advisor in patient care, peer review, and medical education.

As he assumes his role he said, “As active DCMA members we have opportunities to expand our skills and advocacy for our profession, our specialties and ultimately provide the best health care for our patients.”

ALEXANDER FERNANDEZ: TRANSFORMING FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT IN HOSPICE CARE

Alexander Fernandez, the Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of VITAS Healthcare, brings a wealth of experience and a fresh perspective to the field of end-of-life care. With a strong background in healthcare financial management, Fernandez has taken on the challenge of optimizing financial performance and ensuring financial compliance at VITAS, one of the oldest and leading hospice providers in South Florida.

Fernandez’s decision to join VITAS earlier this year was driven by his passion for learning and embracing new challenges.

“I have always been a person who enjoys learning and new challenges,” Fernandez says. “When VITAS COO Joel Wherley approached me regarding the role, I began researching the organization and end-of-life care.”

Impressed by VITAS’ commitment to compassionate patient and family-centered care, Fernandez made the decision to transition from the acute care setting to the hospice industry. He recognized the exciting time in the industry with changes in alternative payment models, value-based care, and the projected growth of the hospice sector in the coming years.

Drawing on his extensive experience in healthcare financial management, Fernandez is poised to optimize VITAS’ financial performance and support its growth.

“Regardless of what aspect of healthcare I am managing, my overall approach has remained relatively consistent and ultimately led to successful outcomes,” Fernandez explains.

SFHHA NEWSLINE – JULY 2023 – THE RAPIDLY CHANGING HEALTHCARE PARADIGM

In today’s Modern Healthcare, Caroline Hudson wrote that, “Healthcare research firm Chilmark released a report earlier this month projecting hospital-at-home to grow into a $300 billion industry by 2028, with much of that growth propelled by third-party companies offering turnkey services.”

Her article caused me to remember something that Wael Barsoum, M.D., and then CEO of Cleveland Clinic Florida said many years ago at the groundbreaking ceremony for what was then their new patient tower. When he talked about the configuration of the new tower, he shared that Cleveland Clinic saw the time of the one-day admission going away, wow was he right! With the speed of light, innovators are figuring out how to align with hospitals, or not, to manage this patient cohort at home.

Hospital-at-home, an innovative approach to healthcare delivery, holds great promise and has the potential to revolutionize the traditional hospital system. By allowing patients to receive hospital-level care in the comfort of their own homes, this concept aims to improve patient outcomes, enhance patient satisfaction, and reduce healthcare costs.

LAKESIDE MEDICAL CENTER GRADUATES 11TH CLASS OF FAMILY MEDICINE RESIDENTS

June 30, 2023 – The Health Care District of Palm Beach County’s teaching hospital, Lakeside Medical Center, recently graduated five new physicians. The hospital’s 11th class of family medicine residents completed three years of rigorous training, the first of which was during the height of the pandemic in the underserved, rural Glades communities that were considered a hot spot.

“This resident class was thrust onto the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic, facing some of the toughest challenges that our hospital in Belle Glade has ever encountered,” Darcy J. Davis, Health Care District CEO stated in her remarks to residents, family, friends and faculty attending the graduation ceremony on June 22nd. “Not only did they embrace the responsibilities of patient care, they also rose to the occasion by rapidly acquiring knowledge about a deadly pandemic and helped save lives.”

Giselle Falconi, MD; Jennifer Hua, DO; Nzingha Saunders, DO; Heden Presendieu, MD; and Anthony Hernandez, MD completed rotations in emergency medicine, critical care, women’s health, psychiatry, general surgery, inpatient, outpatient and community medicine, sports medicine, cardiology, geriatrics, and pediatrics. As part of the residency program, the residents treated patients at the Health Care District’s C.L. Brumback Primary Care Clinics’ Belle Glade Clinic, which shares space with the hospital. One of the program’s goals is to cultivate physicians to practice locally. To that end, Dr. Hua and Dr. Hernandez plan to continue their careers in Palm Beach County.

For the past six years, Monigle has analyzed health care data, producing an annual report that provides various insights into how brands and their audiences interact. This year’s report, “Humanizing Brand Experience Volume 6: Healthcare Edition,” shows Miami as the top city in the nation for health engagement with an index of 126, followed by Gainesville and Charleston, South Carolina, with indices of 123 and 122, respectively.

June 30, 2023 – Tampa General Hospital (TGH) has been named one of the greatest hospitals in the U.S., according to the 2023 Becker’s Hospital Review “Great Hospitals in America” list.

Tampa General is one of 86 hospitals nationwide, one of only two hospitals in Florida and the only hospital in the Tampa Bay region to receive recognition on Becker’s list.

AMA: SCOTUS AFFIRMATIVE ACTION RULING “BAD FOR HEALTH CARE, BAD FOR MEDICINE, AND UNDERMINES THE HEALTH OF OUR NATION”

“Today’s decision by the U.S. Supreme Court undermines decades of progress centered on the educational value of diversity, and will reverse gains made in the battle against health inequities. This ruling restricts medical schools from considering race and ethnicity among the multiple factors in admissions policies and will translate into a less diverse physician workforce. Diversity is vital to health care, and this court ruling deals a serious blow to our goal of increasing medical career opportunities for historically marginalized and minoritized people.

“While our country grows more diverse, historically marginalized communities have been left behind on nearly every health indicator. A physician workforce that reflects the diversity of the nation is key to eliminating racial inequities. There is convincing evidence that racially diverse care teams produce measurably positive health outcomes for patients in historically marginalized populations. The goal is not racially segregated care, but rather a health care workforce in which racial and ethnic representation is a more common aspect of care teams.

“Recently established AMA policy reinforces our stance that medical schools must continue to make progress toward enrolling talented and highly qualified medical students in racial and ethnic groups that have been traditionally underrepresented in medicine. Eliminating health inequity requires more commitment to, investment in and support for Black, Latinx and Native American and Indigenous communities, and LGBTQ+ people. Yet, today’s ruling undermines policy that was producing positive results and improving the health of our patients, as well as making all physicians better practitioners. This ruling is bad for health care, bad for medicine, and undermines the health of our nation.”

SCIENTISTS DISCOVER CLUES TO AGING AND HEALING FROM A SQUISHY SEA CREATURE

A relative of jellyfish and corals regrows its entire body with help from “aging” cells.

Insights into healing and aging were discovered by National Institutes of Health researchers and their collaborators, who studied how a tiny sea creature regenerates an entire new body from only its mouth. The researchers sequenced RNA from Hydractinia symbiolongicarpus, a small, tube-shaped animal that lives on the shells of hermit crabs. Just as the Hydractinia were beginning to regenerate new bodies, the researchers detected a molecular signature associated with the biological process of aging, also known as senescence. According to the study published in Cell Reports, Hydractinia demonstrates that the fundamental biological processes of healing and aging are intertwined, providing new perspective on how aging evolved.

“Studies like this that explore the biology of unusual organisms reveal both how universal many biological processes are and how much we have yet to understand about their functions, relationships and evolution,” said Charles Rotimi, Ph.D., director of the Intramural Research Program at the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI), part of NIH. “Such findings have great potential for providing novel insights into human biology.”
