DELRAY MEDICAL CENTER IS FIRST HOSPITAL IN SOUTH FLORIDA TO TREAT HEART ARRYTHMIA WITH INNOVATIVE AVEIR™ DR DUAL CHAMBER LEADLESS PACEMAKER
April 18, 2024 – Delray Medical Center is the first hospital in South Florida to offer an innovative treatment for patients with slow or irregular heart rhythms, using the new AVEIR™ DR dual chamber leadless pacemaker system. The first surgery was performed at the hospital by Dr. Mark Freher on April 18th.
Approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in June 2023, the AVEIR DR system, which is manufactured by Abbott, provides a new minimally invasive option to treat people who require pacing in two chambers of the heart (both the right atrium and right ventricle). Unlike traditional pacemakers, leadless devices are implanted directly into the heart and eliminate the need for cardiac leads. Traditional pacemakers require an incision to implant a battery in a pocket under the patient’s skin in the collarbone area. Wires from the battery are then stretched through veins and attached to the heart muscle.
Studies have shown that some patients who are implanted with traditional, wired pacemakers can experience such complications as bleeding or infection in the surgical pockets or blood clots around the wires.[i]

April 18, 2024 – HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital, a 435-bed full-service acute care facility, and part of HCA Florida Healthcare, the largest healthcare system in the state, today announced its pioneering status as the first facility on the Treasure Coast to offer the revolutionary Endovascular Renal denervation (RDN) procedure. TD BANK DONATES $150,000 TO TAMPA GENERAL HOSPITAL’S CANCER INSTITUTE TO BRING CRITICAL TREATMENT AND CARE TO RURAL COMMUNITIES
The gift will help bridge the gap in access to quality cancer care for residents.
Tampa, FL April 17, 2024 – Tampa General Hospital (TGH) today announced it has received a $150,000 donation from TD Bank to support the TGH Cancer Institute’s rural community outreach program to provide cancer care and outreach to residents of rural communities across the Tampa Bay region.
The two-year grant will help to bring screening, prevention and treatment services to these underserved regions with historically limited access to early cancer education, detection, care and treatment. Location of clinics, shortage of specialists and lack of transportation are all barriers to treatment and care across many of these communities, whose residents are at increased risk for disease and often face higher death rates from lung, colorectal, prostate and cervical cancers.
“As a founding member of our Corporate Philanthropy Partners program, TD Bank has supported Tampa General Hospital through event sponsorships and grants for many years,” said Frann Leppla, senior vice president and chief philanthropy officer, Tampa General Hospital. “We are beyond grateful for this new, generous donation, which will help deliver innovative solutions and lifesaving cancer treatment and care to rural populations in Florida.”

NEW STUDY FROM HSS REVEALS MINIMALLY INVASIVE PROCEDURE CAN DELAY ARTHRITIS IN SELECT PATIENTS WITH HIP IMPINGEMENT
First Study to Demonstrate Longer-Term Benefits of Modern Hip Arthroscopy Techniques
April 17, 2024 – A new study by surgeon-scientists at Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) found that 25% of patients with hip impingement who underwent modern arthroscopy for their condition experienced a delay in the natural progression of osteoarthritis. The retrospective study, published online on March 8, 2024, in The American Journal of Sports Medicine, is the first to link hip arthroscopy with a reduced risk of developing hip arthritis over the long term.
“I’m very proud of our team for publishing this work, which validates hip arthroscopy as a longer-term joint-preserving procedure in carefully selected patients,” says Bryan T. Kelly, MD, MBA, President and CEO of HSS and a world-renowned pioneer in the field of hip arthroscopy who also served as senior author on the study. “At HSS, we focus on providing excellence in clinical care through innovation and evidence-based research. This paper is a prime example of the benefits of advancing innovations in surgical techniques and analyzing patient data collected over many years so we can understand and share the factors associated with optimal results.”
Hip impingement, also called femoroacetabular impingement (FAI), is a condition that typically arises between the teenage years and middle age, and is the underlying cause of hip pain in about 40% of patients in this age range. Hip impingement occurs when the bones of the hip joint are not shaped properly, causing them to rub against one another. Over time, the persistent friction can lead to pain and stiffness, eventually progressing to advanced arthritis.

TWO CLINICAL TRIALS IDENTIFY A BETTER WAY TO TARGET APPROPRIATE ANTIBIOTICS FOR PATIENTS HOSPITALIZED WITH PNEUMONIA OR URINARY TRACT INFECTION
Algorithm driven alerts help identify best antibiotic for patients with common infections in two 59-hospital trials, with implications to reduce antibiotic resistance
April 19, 2024 – NASHVILLE, Tenn. & ORANGE, Calif. & ATLANTA & BOSTON– Two large multi-state studies uncovered a highly effective way to improve antibiotic selection for patients hospitalized with pneumonia or urinary tract infections (UTI), enabling better antibiotic stewardship in hospitals, according to research studies published today in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA).
Stewardship Prompts to Improve Antibiotic Selection for Pneumonia
Stewardship Prompts to Improve Antibiotic Selection for Urinary Tract Infection
The studies, led by Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Institute, HCA Healthcare and the University of California, Irvine, were funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Antibiotic resistance, which occurs when germs like bacteria and fungi mutate to defeat the drugs designed to kill them, is a major public health threat. Helping clinicians tailor antibiotic prescriptions to individual patients can improve patient outcomes by preserving healthy bacteria in the body and reducing the risk of future antibiotic resistance. The two newly published studies, the INSPIRE Pneumonia and UTI Trials, involved more than 220,000 patients with pneumonia or UTI in 59 HCA Healthcare hospitals. In half of the hospitals, clinicians were given algorithm driven computerized alerts with information about the best antibiotic match for an individual patient at the moment antibiotics were being prescribed. This resulted in a better match for 28% of pneumonia patients and 17% of patients with UTI when compared to hospitals where physicians were not provided with alerts according to the trials.

SETTING THE RECORD STRAIGHT: AHCA IS COMMITTED TO MAKING HEALTH CARE AFFORDABLE FOR FLORIDIANS
FROM AHCA: Tallahassee, Fla. – On Wednesday, April 17, 2024, Florida Politics published a misleading story titled “More than 22K children dropped from Florida KidCare in 2024”. It is important the Agency sets the record straight on this important topic to provide Floridians the truth about how the Florida KidCare program operates and how the federal government’s unlawful action only serves to harm the integrity and long-term stability of the program. Below you will find important facts that were left out of the story:
FACTS:
• As of April 2024, more than 182,000 children have enrolled in Florida KidCare, representing a 66% increase in enrollment since May of 2023. • Florida KidCare was never designed to be a permanent entitlement program like Medicaid. At its core, Florida’s unique program serves as a bridge from Medicaid to private insurance plans, helping families to continue their path to a more prosperous career and financial independence.
• Disenrollment in KidCare has been consistent at these levels for years and occurs for a variety of reasons including children aging out of the program and families graduating on to private insurance as they find more gainful employment.
• There are situations where a recipient is disenrolled due to a failure to pay monthly premiums. In those circumstances it’s important to note their eligibility for KidCare benefits is not impacted—in fact, disenrollment does not affect eligibility at all. Allowing disenrollment for nonpayment of premiums is crucial to maintaining the integrity and long-term sustainability of the program and helps Florida continue to maintain its high level of quality service for KidCare participants.

DOCTORS UNDERUTILIZE NEXT-GEN ANTIBIOTICS TO FIGHT RESISTANT INFECTIONS IN U.S. HOSPITALS
NIH scientists find clinicians still rely often on older and toxic medicines.
April 19, 2024 – Despite Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approval of seven next-generation antibiotics to fight infections caused by resistant “gram-negative” bacteria, clinicians frequently continue to treat antibiotic-resistant infections with older generic antibiotics considered to be less effective and less safe, according to a study by researchers at the National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) Clinical Center. Researchers examined the factors influencing doctors’ preference for newer antibiotics over traditional generic agents to shed light on the decision-making processes among clinicians when treating patients with challenging bloodstream infections caused by gram-negative bacteria and significant comorbidities.
The study revealed that at a considerable proportion of hospitals, particularly smaller facilities located in rural areas, staff were reluctant to adopt newer antibiotics. Researchers identified a large cost disparity between older and newer classes of antibiotics; the newer drugs can cost approximately six times more than the older medications, which could disincentivize prescribing.

NIH RESEARCHERS DEVELOP AI TOOL WITH POTENTIAL TO MORE PRECISELY MATCH CANCER DRUGS TO PATIENTS
Proof-of-concept study analyzed a newer technology known as single-cell RNA sequencing.
April 18, 2024 – In a proof-of-concept study, researchers at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) have developed an artificial intelligence (AI) tool that uses data from individual cells inside tumors to predict whether a person’s cancer will respond to a specific drug. Researchers at the National Cancer Institute (NCI), part of NIH, published their work on April 18, 2024, in Nature Cancer, and suggest that such single-cell RNA sequencing data could one day be used to help doctors more precisely match cancer patients with drugs that will be effective for their cancer.
Current approaches to matching patients to drugs rely on bulk sequencing of tumor DNA and RNA, which takes an average of all the cells in a tumor sample. However, tumors contain more than one type of cell and in fact can have many different types of subpopulations of cells. Individual cells in these subpopulations are known as clones. Researchers believe these subpopulations of cells may respond differently to specific drugs, which could explain why some patients do not respond to certain drugs or develop resistance to them.

NIH MODIFIES APPLICATION AND REVIEW PROCESS FOR FELLOWSHIP GRANTS TO BROADEN SCIENTIFIC TRAINEE POOL
April 18, 2024 – The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is revising the application and peer review process for grants that enable external institutions to recruit for research training fellowships. Fellowship training awards are a critical part of the development of the biomedical research workforce. The revised approach for peer review of fellowship applications is designed to enhance participation from strong applicants at smaller schools, mentors relatively early in their careers, and well-qualified students with less-conventional academic backgrounds. These changes will be effective for fellowship applications due on or after Jan. 25, 2025.
“NIH is potentially leaving out promising scientists for training opportunities due to a process that too heavily favors elite institutions and senior sponsors who are well known. This has led to an overly narrow emphasis on traditional markers of early academic success,” said NIH Director Monica M. Bertagnolli, M.D. “These changes are aimed at improving the path for talented scientists who might not be recognized under the current system.”
