April 27, 2026 – The Amazon 13th Annual Broward Health Ball, presented by Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Hollywood, TeamHealth and VITAS Healthcare, brought together more than 1,400 community and philanthropic leaders for an unforgettable evening of music, dining and dancing, raising nearly $3.5 million for the Broward Health Foundation. Funds raised support Broward Health’s mission of providing exceptional care, extraordinary compassion and everyday excellence, ensuring the community’s health and well-being for generations to come.
Guests enjoyed an entertaining evening with immersive décor, aerial performances, live musical entertainment, themed lounges and more. WSVN’s reporter Alex Miranda served as emcee.

| VITAS Healthcare Breaks Ground on New Inpatient Hospice Center in Port St. Lucie’s Tradition Community
The 12-bed inpatient hospice facility located in Tradition is expected to serve more than 500 patients each year.
April 22, 2026 – PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. – As Florida’s aging population continues to grow, increasing demand for inpatient hospice care, VITAS Healthcare, the nation’s leading provider of end-of-life care, broke ground this week on a new inpatient hospice center in Port St. Lucie.
xpected to open in 2027, the new 14,000-square-foot facility will expand access to comfort-focused inpatient hospice care for individuals whose symptoms can no longer be managed at home, ensuring more families can receive expert care close to Florida’s Treasure Coast.
Located in the Tradition community, the center will be the first freestanding inpatient hospice facility in the city and VITAS’ first inpatient unit serving the Treasure Coast region. The 12-bed facility is expected to serve more than 500 patients each year.
“Florida’s growth means more families are facing serious illness and the need for hospice care,” said Patty Husted, executive vice president at VITAS Healthcare. “Our responsibility is to meet that need with compassion, clinical excellence and timely access to the right level of care. This inpatient center allows us to do exactly that, bringing comfort and dignity to patients when they need it most, close to home.”
Designed with comfort in mind, the inpatient hospice center will feature private patient rooms and spaces created to support dignity and connection for both patients and their loved ones.
VITAS marked the milestone with a ceremonial groundbreaking on April 21 at Tradition Town Hall. Among the notable attendees were Rep. Dana Trabulsy, representatives from the St. Lucie County Chamber of Commerce, Chamberlain University and South University, and other local healthcare and community leaders.

Memorial Advances Kidney Transplant Care with Robotic Surgery for Donors and Recipients
APRIL 27, 2026 – Sixty-five-year-old James Emmanuel received a life-saving kidney from his daughter through a transplant performed with the help of a skilled surgeon using leading-edge robotic technology.
Memorial Healthcare System is advancing kidney transplant care by using the da Vinci 5 (DV5) robotic surgical system, the latest generation of robotic technology, to expand access to minimally invasive transplant procedures for both living kidney donors and recipients.
Emmanuel became the first patient at Memorial and South Florida to undergo a robotic-assisted kidney transplant procedure on the most advanced DV5 robotic platform, a highly specialized approach still performed by only a limited number of transplant centers.
Earlier in 2025, Memorial debuted its first robotic living donor kidney recovery. Emmanuel’s surgery marked another milestone for Memorial, placing it among the very few select hospitals in the country and the only one in Broward County, offering robotic-assisted surgery for both kidney donors and recipients.

Memorial Healthcare System Reports 178% Surge in E-Bike and E-Scooter Injuries
APRIL 27, 2026 – Physicians at Memorial Healthcare System are raising concerns about a dramatic increase in injuries tied to e-bikes and e-scooters across South Florida, affecting riders of all ages.
New data from Memorial shows a 178% increase in e-bike and e-scooter-related injuries from 2024 to 2025, with the trend continuing into 2026. Physicians say the severity of injuries is escalating, with more patients arriving as trauma alerts. Injuries include head trauma, skull fractures, lacerations and orthopedic injuries, some with long-term complications, many of which could have been prevented with simple safety measures.
“We are seeing patients of all ages come in with serious, sometimes life-altering injuries,” said Oliver Lao, MD, medical director of Pediatric Trauma Services at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. “These are not toys. These are motorized vehicles capable of significant speed, and when something goes wrong, the consequences can be devastating.”

April 27, 2026 – Board-certified physician Miriam Zylberglait, M.D., has joined Baptist Health Medical Group at Baptist Health South Miami Hospital. She specializes in obesity medicine and will provide comprehensive, patient-centered care for individuals living with obesity and related metabolic conditions.
Dr. Zylberglait is board-certified in internal medicine, geriatric medicine and obesity medicine. She brings a multidisciplinary, evidence-based approach to care, with a focus on prevention, long-term success and improving quality of life. Her work emphasizes helping patients develop sustainable strategies through lifestyle changes, behavioral support and, when appropriate, medical therapy.
Dr. Zylberglait earned her medical degree from Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia in Lima, Peru, and a master’s degree in public health and epidemiology from Universidad Nacional Federico Villarreal. She completed her internal medicine and geriatric medicine training at the University of Miami. Her clinical interests include the intersection of obesity, aging and chronic disease, with a focus on improving function, energy and overall well-being.

April 28, 2026 – Board-certified psychiatrist Enrique Diaz, M.D., has joined Baptist Health Miami Neuroscience Institute, part of Baptist Health Brain & Spine Care. Dr. Diaz specializes in adult and geriatric psychiatry and brings nearly two decades of post-residency clinical experience treating patients across inpatient, outpatient and emergency settings.
Dr. Diaz is board-certified in psychiatry and geriatric psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. His clinical interests include mood disorders, anxiety disorders and treatment-resistant conditions. He is particularly focused on optimizing evidence-based treatments, including medication management and neuromodulation strategies when appropriate. Throughout his career, he has cared for patients with complex psychiatric and medical comorbidities, including those facing substance use disorders and neuropsychiatric conditions.
Dr. Diaz earned his medical degree from Instituto Superior de Ciencias Médicas de La Habana in Cuba. He completed a residency in general psychiatry at University of Miami Miller School of Medicine / Jackson Memorial Hospital, followed by a fellowship in geriatric psychiatry at the same institution, where he served as chief fellow. His research has included work focused on Alzheimer’s disease and agitation, contributing to evidence-based approaches in geriatric mental health care.

AMA urges Congress to strengthen safeguards for AI chatbots
APRIL 22, 2026- The American Medical Association (AMA) today urged federal lawmakers to put stronger safeguards in place as the use of augmented intelligence (AI) chatbots in mental health care continues to grow. The AMA emphasized both the promise and risks of these rapidly expanding technologies.
In letters to the co-chairs of the Congressional Artificial Intelligence Caucus (PDF), the Congressional Digital Health Caucus (PDF), and the Senate Artificial Intelligence Caucus (PDF), the AMA recognized Congress for advancing conversations about AI’s role in society and mental health. At the same time, the AMA warned that the rapid rise of mental health chatbots—along with reports of risks such as encouraging self-harm and privacy breaches—highlights the urgent need for clear guardrails to protect patients and maintain public trust.
“AI-enabled tools may help expand access to mental health resources and support innovation in health care delivery, but they lack consistent safeguards against serious risks, including emotional dependency, misinformation, and inadequate crisis response,” according to AMA CEO John Whyte, MD, MPH. “With thoughtful oversight and accountability, policymakers can support innovation and ensure technologies prioritize patient safety, strengthen public trust, and responsibly complement—not replace—clinical care.”
While AI technologies present meaningful opportunities to improve access to care and support innovation in health care delivery, recent congressional hearings made clear that immediate attention is required to ensure these tools do not inadvertently harm individuals seeking mental health support.

CMS and FDA Announce RAPID Coverage Pathway to Accelerate Patient Access to Life-Changing Medical Devices
New pathway cuts red tape and brings predictability to Medicare coverage for Breakthrough Devices
APRIL 23, 2026 – Today, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced the Regulatory Alignment for Predictable and Immediate Device (RAPID) coverage pathway, a new pathway designed to expedite access to certain FDA-designated Class II and Class III Breakthrough Devices for people with Medicare.
“FDA and CMS each play a critical role in getting new medical devices to patients, and they work most effectively when aligned sooner in that process,” said CMS Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz. “The RAPID coverage pathway brings our two agencies together earlier, cutting red tape for innovators, and helping beneficiaries access new, life-changing health technology faster.”

FDA Accelerates Action on Treatments for Serious Mental Illness Following Executive Order
APRIL 24, 2026 – President Trump on April 18 issued an Executive Order directing the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to accelerate access to treatments for patients with serious mental illness, including devastating, complex, and treatment-resistant conditions.
Building on this directive, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration today announced a series of regulatory actions to support the development of serotonin-2A agonists and related products, a class of perception-altering psychedelic medications.
“Under President Trump’s leadership, we are accelerating the research, approval, and responsible access to promising mental health treatments—including psychedelic therapies like ibogaine—to confront our nation’s mental health crisis head-on, especially for our veterans,” said Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. “The FDA will prioritize therapies with Breakthrough Therapy designation, where early evidence shows meaningful improvement over existing options for serious mental illness.”

About a decade ago, I lost both of my parents just three months apart. My mother was diagnosed with stage IV glioblastoma, a rapidly advancing brain cancer, and I became an early caregiver in my early twenties. Shortly after, I experienced the sudden loss of my father, followed by my mother’s passing.

Free Autism Screening for Young Children
April 22, 2026 — Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida offers free monthly autism spectrum disorder screenings for toddlers 18 months to five years of age.
The next screenings will be held on May 6 and May 15 from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the Pediatric Specialist Office, 15901 Bass Road, Suite 102, Fort Myers.
It is estimated that one in every 31 children is diagnosed with some form of Autism Spectrum Disorder, making it more common than childhood cancer, juvenile diabetes and pediatric AIDS combined.
Medical consultants for the project stress that an early diagnosis can make a vast difference for toddlers and their families. They say early intensive behavioral intervention can make an immense difference not just in the development of the child, but in their families as well.
