Tampa General Hospital and Mass General Brigham Launch Joint Ambulatory Care Network on Florida’s East Coast
Partnership expands access to high-quality primary, specialty and surgical care throughout Martin, St. Lucie and Palm Beach counties.
January 12, 2026 – Tampa General Hospital (TGH) and Boston-based Mass General Brigham (MGB) today announced a new joint venture creating a coordinated ambulatory network serving Florida’s East Coast and expanding access to high-quality outpatient services – including primary care, specialty care, advanced imaging, oncology and outpatient surgical procedures.

Study Reveals Social, Family and Health Factors Behind Teen Bullying
January 12, 2026 – Bullying in the United States remains a serious public health issue with consequences that extend far beyond the school grounds. For adolescents, being bullied – or engaging in bullying – can lead to lasting mental, physical and social challenges that follow them into adulthood. Victims face higher risks of depression, anxiety, hallucinations, suicidality, and other long-term mental health conditions, while perpetrators often experience increased rates of delinquency, dating violence and criminal behavior.
Social factors, including socioeconomic disadvantages, race and physical differences, further intensify the problem. Bullying is not just a childhood rite of passage – it is a critical societal issue with enduring impacts on health, education and community well-being.
Researchers from Florida Atlantic University’s Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine took a deep dive into the risk factors of bullying among U.S. adolescents ages 12 to 17 using data from the National Survey of Children’s Health, a U.S. Census Bureau household survey collecting information on children’s physical and mental health, access to care, and family and social environments. The study focused on how socioeconomic challenges, social influences, family dynamics, and pre-existing health conditions contribute to the risk of bullying, with the goal of informing more effective prevention strategies.

When Ken Lehman walked into the Brandon Hospital emergency room, he expected lingering pneumonia complications. Instead, the emergency care team uncovered a rapidly escalating medical crisis. Lehman was battling fluid-filled lungs, acute kidney failure and severe coronary artery disease. Physicians declared him critically ill with survival odds looking grim.

AMA 2025 report on substance use and treatment
JANUARY 12, 2026- The American Medical Association (AMA) today released its 2025 report (PDF) on the nation’s overdose epidemic, showing that while opioid-related overdose deaths declined last year, the epidemic remains widespread and increasingly complex, driven by mixing opioids and other substances and an unpredictable illicit drug supply.
Overdose deaths declined from more than 110,000 in 2023 to about 75,000 in 2024, yet there is a tremendous amount of work to be done to sustain and accelerate this progress. The report emphasizes the life-saving role of naloxone and calls on policymakers and others to remove treatment barriers for substance use disorder and pain care.
The report highlights several key trends:
-Pain care: Opioid prescriptions have decreased (PDF) 52% since 2012, falling from 260.5 million to 125.7 million in 2024. Yet, many patients still face barriers to non-opioid pain treatments because of restrictive insurance coverage, leaving them in pain and with reduced function. The AMA advocates for individualized, patient-centered care that preserves physician discretion and expands access to the full menu of therapies.
-Treatment for opioid use disorder: Medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD), such as buprenorphine and methadone, save lives but remain underused due to stigma, regulatory barriers and insurance restrictions. Buprenorphine prescriptions increased (PDF) 83% over the past decade, though utilization has plateaued in recent years. The report highlights key local, state, and federal policies needed to expand access to MOUD and ensure timely treatment.
-Naloxone: Nearly 2 million naloxone prescriptions were dispensed in 2024 (PDF), and expanded distribution from community-based organizations continues to prevent overdose deaths. The AMA supports over-the-counter access and broader distribution from emergency departments and community settings.
-Emerging threats: Polysubstance use increasingly involves stimulants, xylazine, kratom, tianeptine and inhalants. The prevalence of cannabis use disorder is also growing, with associated mental health and pregnancy-related risks.

From Pilot to Program: Florida Blue Expands Cancer Support for Medicare Advantage Members
Trial Showed 40% Reduction in Hospital and ER Visits and 95% Patient Satisfaction
JANUARY 14, 2026 – As part of its ongoing commitment to members with cancer and their families, Florida Blue, the state’s leading health insurer, has launched a new care navigation program. The program guides patients throughout the cancer journey, providing a better experience that connects them to the care and support they need. A pilot study showed a successful 40% reduction in hospital and ER visits for participating patients.
Florida Blue introduced this comprehensive solution for its Medicare Advantage members in collaboration with Evolent, an independent company focused on helping people with complex conditions get the care they need. At no additional cost, patients get a dedicated care navigator and access to easy-to-use digital tools, providing them with ongoing support and guidance between doctor’s visits. Early results show improved outcomes and lower health care costs, with a high patient and caregivers satisfaction score of 95%.

NIH: A fresh energy supply may shield nerves from diabetic or chemo-induced neuropathy
Researchers demonstrate that transferring healthy mitochondria from support glial cells to nerve cells could reduce nerve pain and degeneration.
JANUARY 7, 2026 – A research team supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has found that conditions known to cause nerve damage, or neuropathy, disrupt a crucial energy-transfer process between special support cells called satellite glial cells (SGCs) and the sensory neurons they surround. The investigators discovered that the energy producing machinery of cells, known as mitochondria, are transferred through tiny tubes that form between the SGCs and neurons. They found that this transfer became obstructed in animal models of chemotherapy and diabetes, while restoring it attenuated pain behavior and promoted nerve regeneration after nerve injury.
The results of this study highlight a new avenue for potential neuropathy treatments and provide insight into how some of the body’s most energy-hungry cells are powered.
“Sensory neurons can run from near the spine all the way to the tips of your toes and fingers,” said senior author of the study, Ru-Rong Ji, Ph.D., a professor of anesthesiology and neurobiology and Director of Center for Translational Pain Medicine, at Duke University School of Medicine, Durham, North Carolina. “When they fire, they carry signals a great distance, which is why these cells have a particularly high demand for energy.”
While it has not been clear how these large cells manage to stay energized, Ji and his colleagues have suspected they may lean on a member of the peripheral nervous system’s supporting cast. Satellite glial cells (SGCs), which are already known to provide nutrients, cushioning, and other kinds of support to sensory neurons, seemed like a prime candidate.

CMS Announces New Provider of Organ Procurement Services in South Florida
Nevada Donor Network will deliver organ procurement services following the decertification of the University of Miami’s failed provider
JANUARY 8, 2026 – The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced today that following a competitive selection process, Nevada Donor Network (NVLV) is approved to assume responsibility for organ procurement services in the Southern Florida Donation Service Area, which spans approximately 7 million people in the six counties of South Florida and the commonwealth of the Bahamas.
CMS’ action follows its September 2025 decision to decertify the Life Alliance Organ Recovery Agency, a division of the University of Miami Health System, after documented noncompliance with federal Organ Procurement Organization (OPO) Conditions for Coverage, including years of patient deficiencies related to staffing, training, and quality oversight. CMS will oversee a transition process designed to ensure uninterrupted organ procurement services in South Florida.
“Organ transplant patients and their families rely on CMS to ensure that organ procurement meets federal standards of performance and accountability,” said CMS Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz. “We will continue to aggressively enforce these standards and look forward to working with NVLV to provide high quality transplant services in South Florida.”
As part of the competitive application process to be considered for selection to an open service area, NVLV, a Tier 1 rated OPO, demonstrated that it meets all federal requirements for participation as an OPO and has demonstrated the operational capacity, clinical expertise, and quality infrastructure necessary to serve donor families, hospitals, and patients waiting for lifesaving transplants within the new donation service area.

Marketplace 2026 Open Enrollment Period Report: National Snapshot
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) reports that 22.8 million consumers have signed up for 2026 individual market health insurance coverage through the Marketplaces since the start of the 2026 Marketplace Open Enrollment Period (OEP) on November 1, 2025. This includes 15.6 million Marketplace plan selections in the 30 states using the HealthCare.gov platform for the 2026 plan year and 7.2 million plan selections in the 20 states and the District of Columbia with state-based Exchanges (SBEs) that are using their own eligibility and enrollment platforms.[1] Total nationwide plan selections include 2.8 million consumers who are new to the Marketplaces for 2026, and 20.0 million consumers who had active 2025 coverage and selected a plan for 2026 coverage or were automatically re-enrolled.

Advancing Cancer Care Through Precision Medicine
Miami Cancer Institute, part of Baptist Health South Florida, will host its Fourth Annual Precision Oncology Symposium on January 30-31, 2026, at Loews Coral Gables Hotel.
The one-and-a-half-day event will explore molecular and targeted therapies transforming the treatment of solid tumors, including lung, breast, brain and gastrointestinal cancers. Accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the symposium offers continuing education credits for physicians and healthcare professionals.
