CLEVELAND CLINIC CEO, PRESIDENT TOM MIHALJEVIC, M.D., DELIVERS ANNUAL STATE OF THE CLINIC MESSAGE
Cleveland Clinic sees record number of patients in 2023, remains strong despite economic challenges
January 24, 2024 – During today’s annual State of the Clinic address, Cleveland Clinic CEO and President Tom Mihaljevic, M.D., reported that the health system remains strong and thriving, despite the economic challenges and staffing shortages affecting healthcare.
In 2023, Cleveland Clinic provided nearly 14 million patient encounters worldwide – the most in its history – and generated more than $14 billion in revenue, exceeding expectations.
“In the past, these results would assure a healthy financial foundation for Cleveland Clinic, but all hospitals, including us, are challenged by inflation,” said Dr. Mihaljevic, the holder of the Morton L. Mandel CEO Chair. “The rising cost of wages, supplies and pharmaceuticals has greatly outpaced nominal increases in reimbursement.”

DR. JOSEPH RICOTTA COMPLETES 350TH TCAR PROCEDURE
January 25, 2024 – Dr. Joseph Ricotta, National Medical Director of Vascular Surgery and Endovascular Therapy for Tenet Healthcare and Professor of Surgery and Program Director of the vascular surgery fellowship at Florida Atlantic University School of Medicine Delray Medical Center, recently completed his 350th Transcarotid Artery Revascularization (TCAR) procedure. In 2018, Dr. Ricotta performed the first TCAR procedure in South Florida.
TCAR is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat carotid artery disease, which occurs when plaque buildup narrows the arteries that supply blood to the brain. The TCAR treatment introduced a safer and more efficient approach to remove the plaque from the carotid artery, allowing normal blood flow to the brain.
“Performing 350 successful TCAR procedures displays our team’s commitment to providing state of the art treatment for patients with carotid artery disease and prevents stroke. It gives us the unique ability to offer all available treatment options to people in need, including TCAR, carotid stenting, surgical carotid endarterectomy, and medical management under one umbrella. Being able to provide this life-saving treatment is extremely humbling,” Dr. Ricotta said.

COGNITIVE BEHAVIORAL THERAPY ALTERS BRAIN ACTIVITY IN CHILDREN WITH ANXIETY
NIH researchers found widespread differences in the brains of children with anxiety disorders that improved after treatment.
January 24, 2025 – Researchers at the National Institutes of Health have found overactivation in many brain regions, including the frontal and parietal lobes and the amygdala, in unmedicated children with anxiety disorders. They also showed that treatment with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) led to improvements in clinical symptoms and brain functioning. The findings illuminate the brain mechanisms underlying the acute effects of CBT to treat one of the most common mental disorders. The study, published in the American Journal of Psychiatry, was led by researchers at NIH’s National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH).
“The findings can help our understanding of how and for which children CBT works, a critical first step in personalizing anxiety care and improving clinical outcomes,” said senior author Melissa Brotman, Ph.D., Chief of the Neuroscience and Novel Therapeutics Unit in the NIMH Intramural Research Program.

RESEARCHERS CREATE SAFER FORM OF COXIELLA BURNETII FOR SCIENTIFIC USE
January 25, 2024 – Scientists have unexpectedly discovered that the weakened form of the bacteria Coxiella burnetii (C. burnetii) not typically known to cause disease, naturally acquired an ability to do so. C. burnetii causes Q Fever in humans and its weakened forms are those used for scientific purposes. Subsequently, the scientists identified the genetic mutation responsible for the increased ability to cause disease (virulence) and created a form of the bacteria without the genetic flaw that could safely be used for research. The study, by scientists at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of the National Institutes of Health and collaborators at Washington State University and Northern Arizona University, is published in Nature Communications.
