Florida Pediatricians Testify Against Proposed Rule Weakening School Immunization Requirements
October 8, 2026 – The Florida Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics (FCAAP) is alarmed by the Florida Department of Health’s proposed revisions to Rule 64D-3.046, Florida Administrative Code. If enacted, the rule would remove the requirement that children attending K-12 public schools be immunized against hepatitis B, varicella (chicken pox), Haemophilus influenzae type B (Hib) and pneumococcal diseases. Pediatricians, parents, and advocates testified today before Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo and Department of Health officials, firmly opposing the department’s efforts to weaken Florida’s school immunization requirements and underscoring vaccines’ proven role in keeping children healthy and classrooms safe.

Back or spine problems? Mayo Clinic experts explain where to start
OCTOBER 7, 2026 – When back or spine problems persist, figuring out where to go for care can be confusing. Should you see a neurosurgeon or an orthopedic surgeon? A neurologist or rehabilitation specialist? And if you see a spine surgeon, does that mean you’ll need surgery?
Spine conditions often cross medical specialties, which is why getting the right diagnosis is an important first step, say Mayo Clinic spine experts Benjamin Elder, M.D., Ph.D., a neurosurgeon, and Mel Helgeson, M.D., an orthopedic surgeon.
“The optimum benefit is that patients get thorough evaluations from multiple clinicians with different perspectives to figure out the best route forward,” Dr. Elder says.

AMA Statement on Federal Vaccine Injury Initiative
“The AMA strongly supports legitimate, ongoing vaccine safety monitoring, as well as research grounded in sound science. Investigating potential adverse events is an essential part of protecting patients and maintaining public trust. Research is key to advancing our understanding of this issue, but it must be conducted objectively, transparently, and free from political influence. It should follow strict scientific standards and allow the evidence—rather than predetermined conclusions—to guide the outcomes.
“We are already witnessing the rise in vaccine-preventable diseases due to declines in immunization rates across the U.S. Continuing to undermine confidence in established vaccination practices will further lower immunization rates and fuel the return of preventable diseases. If you have questions about vaccines, talk to your physician.” READ MORE |
AMA Offers Resources as Major Provisions of H.R.1 Take Effect
October 8, 2026 – As major provisions of H.R. 1, also known as the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” take effect, changes to Medicaid and other federal health coverage programs could impact how patients get and maintain coverage and access care. The American Medical Association (AMA) is offering resources to help patients, physicians, and medical students understand what is changing and providing guidance on how to navigate the new requirements, as part of an effort to help patients maintain access.
The law amends many longstanding healthcare policies, including Medicaid eligibility and work requirements as well as health coverage for certain immigrants. The AMA’s online resources explain what is changing, when these provisions take effect, and what patients, physicians and students need to know to protect access to care.
“When Congress was debating this bill, the AMA raised concerns that it would make it harder for patients to access care and could lead to worse health outcomes.

HHS Announces Up to $27.8 Million for Falls Prevention
OCTOBER 9, 2026—The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), through the Administration for Community Living (ACL), today announced the recipients of three falls prevention initiatives totaling up to $27.8 million over three years. The funding will expand proven programs, strengthen connections between health care providers and community organizations, and help states and local partners reach more older adults before a fall leads to injury or loss of independence.
Falls are the leading cause of injury for people 65 and older. One in four older adults falls every year, and a fall is rarely just a fall. It can result in an injury or hospital stay, and non-fatal falls account for an estimated $80 billion in healthcare spending per year. A fall can also shake a person’s confidence and make everyday activities — from walking and shopping to visiting friends — more difficult. Healthcare and aging network providers can help prevent many falls by identifying risks early. They can then connect older adults with programs and support that build strength, improve balance, and make their homes safer.

OCTOBER 8, 2026— The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) this week launched a series of actions to strengthen how the federal government identifies, documents, investigates, and responds to health problems reported following vaccination, with a focus on improving patient care and generating better evidence about potential vaccine-related injuries.

Will require electronic health records to capture vaccine-related adverse events so that information can follow patients across the health care system; and Is modernizing the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) VAERS to make reporting simpler and improve the tools available to researchers and medical professionals investigating potential safety signals. An Evening of Hope Celebrating 25 Years of Compassion and Saving Lives
For 25 years, A Safe Haven for Newborns has stood as a beacon of hope for mothers in crisis and a lifeline for vulnerable newborns. What began as Nick’s deeply personal journey to heal a broken heart and honor the memory of his beloved wife, Gloria, following her tragic passing, has grown into an internationally recognized organization dedicated to preventing infant abandonment and providing support, counseling, and critical resources to women facing the overwhelming reality of an unplanned pregnancy. From its beginnings, the mission has been rooted in compassion, dignity, and love — offering hope, protection, and a path forward during life’s most difficult moments.
Over the past quarter century, countless lives have been touched through the organization’s unwavering commitment to offering safe, legal, and anonymous options for mothers seeking help. Through advocacy, education, community partnerships, and around-the-clock support, A Safe Haven for Newborns has continued to remind women that they are never alone. To date, 441 newborns have been given a chance at life — 431 in Florida; nine in other states, and one in Honduras.
This milestone anniversary is more than a celebration of years — it is a celebration of lives, second chances, and the power of compassion to change the future. We invite you to join us in celebrating our Silver Jubilee by visiting our website and selecting a sponsorship opportunity.
