TAMPA GENERAL HOSPITAL REMAINS SAFE AND OPEN THROUGH HURRICANE IDALIA

As the Region’s Only Level I Trauma Center, the Academic Health System Stands Ready to Treat and Support Patients in the Communities Hardest Hit by Hurricane Idalia.

August 30, 2023 – Hurricane Idalia brought heavy rains, strong winds and storm surge to the Tampa Bay region, resulting in flooding in low lying areas. However, the patients, physicians and team members at Tampa General Hospital (TGH) remain safe, with power on, ongoing patient care and plenty of supplies to support continued operations.

“The state depends on Tampa General to deliver world-class care, and we are committed to deliver on that expectation while keeping our patients, physicians and team members safe from harm,” said John Couris, president and CEO of Tampa General Hospital. “That’s why we have strengthened our infrastructure to withstand severe weather, prepared and practiced emergency management, and brought in additional supplies to support our teams and patients through severe weather conditions. I am grateful to all the physicians and team members who remained on site through the hurricane, and for the exceptional care they continued to provide here while their families sheltered safely at home or away. Because of these efforts, patients at Tampa General are safe, and we are preparing to care for Floridians in the hardest hit communities.”

Since 2004, we have provided a media platform to the Hospital and Healthcare Community to publicly salute their staffs. In these issues, we ask the hospital and healthcare clinic industry to support our organization and newspaper by placing ads that “thank their staff for an excellent job”, and the message is then broadcast to the entire healthcare community in South Florida. With each ad, you also are able to submit an article and two staff profiles per facility.

These dedicated professionals often find themselves navigating a complex web of challenges, from managing overhead costs to maintaining a strong online presence. Recognizing these needs, Lina has emerged to provide space, community and support for healthcare practitioners in private practice so they can focus on what they do best – high quality patient care.

Migoya, Jackson’s CEO. “It’s fitting that we celebrate this moment with the opening of this urgent care center because one of the bond’s promises was to bring our care closer to Miami-Dade County’s families.”

Nicklaus Children’s Hospital has been designated a Diagnostic Imaging Center of Excellence® (DICOE) by the American College of Radiology (ACR).

September 1, 2023 – The DICOE program, which represents the pinnacle of medical imaging care, is an achievement that goes beyond accreditation to recognize best-quality imaging practices and diagnostic care. NEW PROTECTION AVAILABLE FOR INFANTS AGAINST RSV – CLEVELAND CLINIC

There will be new protection available for babies this fall against the leading cause of infant hospitalizations in the United States. A pediatric infectious disease specialist explains.

September 1, 2023  – There will be new protection available for babies this fall against RSV (respiratory syncytial virus), which is the leading cause of infant hospitalizations in the United States.

“A lot of the symptoms you get from RSV are the standard cold symptoms of runny nose, cough and fever,” explained Frank Esper, MD, pediatric infectious disease specialist at Cleveland Clinic Children’s. “With babies, RSV also causes a lot of congestion in their airways, and babies’ airways are so small that it doesn’t take a lot of congestion to completely clog up their windpipes and airways. This can lead to breathing problems, and that’s what causes babies to be hospitalized.”

Dr. Esper said the CDC is recommending the new immunization starting this fall for babies under 8 months of age to help prevent severe illness from RSV.

STUDY FINDS LINK BETWEEN COVID AND RISK FOR HYPERTENSION – CLEVELAND CLINIC

A cardiologist comments on new research showing a possible link between COVID-19 and the onset of hypertension in some individuals.

September 1, 2023 – CLEVELAND – Researchers are continuing to learn more about the long-term effects of COVID-19.

Now, a new study shows the virus has been associated with a risk for developing hypertension, otherwise known as high blood pressure.

“This study provides another important piece of evidence detailing the impact of COVID-19 on cardiometabolic health within the United States, particularly with blood pressure increases,” said Luke Laffin, MD, cardiologist for Cleveland Clinic.

According to the study, at a six month follow up, hypertension was seen in about 20% of hospitalized patients with COVID-19, and nearly 11% of non-hospitalized patients with COVID-19.

EMPLOYEE RETENTION CREDIT – WHAT’S REAL & WHAT’S NOT?

September 1, 2023 – Escaping all of the marketing for the Employee Retention Tax Credit is virtually impossible.  Letters that appear to be official from the U.S. Government, emails, telemarketer calls, texts and radio and television ads are bombarding us every day.  They are certainly suspicious, as they sometimes sound too good to be true, with promises of $26,000 per employee.  In some ways, it is too good to be true since it is rare for a company to actually receive $26,000 per employee, but it is certainly real.  The caveat to the latter is when the work is performed by a professional company that is not making a frivolous claim for the credit and the business has a legitimate qualifying reason.

There are real qualifications that need to be met and I have seen many companies illegitimately qualify a business.  For example, I have yet to find a business that actually meets the IRS’s requirements for a ‘supply chain’ qualification, yet this is a common reason claimed by some of these firms.  But, there are many legitimate reasons.

RICHARD M. SCHULZE FAMILY FOUNDATION CANCER CLINIC AT THE BONITA HEALTH CENTER TO OPEN SEPT. 15

Cancer Care Now Available Closer to Home for South Lee and Collier County Residents

August 31, 2023 — The Lee Health Cancer Institute is opening a new cancer clinic at the Bonita Health Center on Sept. 15, making it more convenient for southern Lee County and Collier County residents and visitors to access cancer care.

The Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation Cancer Clinic will offer oncology services, giving access to treatments, physicians, and other necessary medical support staff closer to home.

Joshua Brown knows what a difference convenient cancer care makes.

“It’s such a relief to have cancer care close to home so I can get back to my happy place sooner and not dread the drive and time spent in the car after going through hours of chemotherapy and other appointments,” said Brown, who has colon cancer. “We need a cancer center further south because much of our population has moved in that direction. World-class cancer care is available in our backyard and will have a tremendous impact.”

Lee Health also has a cancer treatment center in Fort Myers at 8931 Colonial Center Dr.

CMS ANNOUNCES RESOURCES AND FLEXIBILITIES TO ASSIST WITH THE PUBLIC HEALTH EMERGENCY IN THE STATE OF FLORIDA

August 31, 2023 – The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services announced today additional resources and flexibilities available in response to Hurricane Idalia in the State of Florida. CMS is working closely with the State of Florida to put these flexibilities in place to ensure those affected by this natural disaster have access to the care they need – when they need it most.

On August 28, 2023, President Biden determined that an Emergency exists in the State of Florida due to the emergency conditions resulting from Hurricane Idalia beginning August 27, 2023, and continuing. Additionally, on August 30, 2023, Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra determined that a Public Health Emergency exists in the State of Florida and has existed since August 27, 2023.

CMS stands ready to assist with resources and waivers to ensure hospitals and other facilities can continue to operate and provide access to care to those impacted by the consequences of the hurricane.

MEDICARE AND MEDICAID PROGRAMS: MINIMUM STAFFING STANDARDS FOR LONG-TERM CARE FACILITIES AND MEDICAID INSTITUTIONAL PAYMENT TRANSPARENCY REPORTING (CMS 3442-P)

On September 1, 2023, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) issued the Minimum Staffing Standards for Long-Term Care (LTC) Facilities and Medicaid Institutional Payment Transparency Reporting proposed rule, which seeks to establish comprehensive nurse staffing requirements to hold nursing homes accountable for providing safe and high-quality care for the over 1.2 million residents receiving care in Medicare and Medicaid-certified LTC facilities each day.

Ensuring that beneficiaries receive safe, reliable, and quality nursing home care is a critical function of the Medicare and Medicaid programs and a top priority of CMS. The COVID-19 Public Health Emergency (PHE) tragically caused unprecedented illness and death among nursing home residents and workers. The PHE also exacerbated staffing challenges experienced in many facilities and further highlighted disparities in care and outcomes. Despite existing requirements that facilities provide sufficient levels of staffing in LTC facilities, chronic understaffing remains a significant concern.

BIDEN HARRIS ADMINISTRATION INVESTS MORE THAN $80 MILLION TO HELP RURAL COMMUNITIES RESPOND TO FENTANYL AND OTHER OPIOID OVERDOSE RISKS

August 31, 2023 – Today, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) announced more than $80 million in awards to rural communities in 39 states to support key strategies to respond to the overdose risk from fentanyl and other opioids. These awards help advance President Biden’s commitment to beat the opioid epidemic as part of his Unity Agenda for the nation.

HRSA funding will support interventions such as distributing the lifesaving overdose reversal drug naloxone to prevent overdose; creating and expanding treatment sites in rural areas to provide medications to treat opioid use disorder; expanding access to behavioral health care for young people in rural communities; and, caring for infants in rural areas who are at-risk for opioid exposure or experiencing symptoms related to opioid exposure.

“Far too many rural families have faced the devastation of overdose, and these deaths are felt deeply across rural communities – where often everyone knows someone lost too soon,” said HRSA Administrator Carole Johnson. “At the Health Resources and Services Administration, we know that funding based on population size or other broad-based rubrics can miss the vital treatment and response needs of rural communities. That’s why the investments we are announcing today are targeted to rural communities and tailored to the unique challenges of helping rural health care leaders expand access to treatment and build recovery pathways to prevent overdose.”

NO MORE STETHOSCOPES? ISRAELI DEVICE DIAGNOSES HEART PROBLEMS ALMOST INSTANTLY

“WHILE THE ACCURACY OF DIAGNOSING HEART FAILURE THROUGH A PHYSICAL EXAMINATION ALONE, USING A STETHOSCOPE, IS 35%, THE ACCURACY WITH AISAP TESTING IS OVER 95%,” SAID PROF. ROBERT KLEMPNER, DIRECTOR OF SHEBA MEDICAL CENTER’S HEART REHABILITATION INSTITUTE.

August 30, 2023 – A revolution in heart health is seemingly imminent as an Israeli startup has invented a machine that diagnoses heart problems at a patient’s bedside within minutes – with a success rate of over 90%.

A small group of technological wizards and heart specialists from Sheba Medical Center developed a platform called AISAP, which stands for Artificial Intelligence and the acronym for “as soon as possible,” whose software is linked though a tablet to a standard, hand-held ultrasound scanner.

Having hundreds of millions of previous cardiac images in its database, AISAP can diagnose eight vital heart functions from only two scan points in a matter of minutes. It also has a safety feature that “knows” when an image is not clear enough to provide a diagnosis and will tell the person to perform the scan again on the spot.
