UF/IFAS EXPERTS ON BED BUGS AND HOW TO KEEP THEM FROM HITCHHIKING TO YOUR HOMES FROM YOUR TRAVELS
December 11, 2023 — With recent media exposure of bed bug activity impacting travelers worldwide, the public perception of this species tends to draw some concerns over its potential for harming humans and pets.
University of Florida experts at the Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) weigh in with science-based research on recognizing the species, their impacts on humans and pets and how to keep them from hitchhiking home with you after traveling.
Let’s begin with a few bites about bed bugs.
“Bed bugs are blood-sucking insects, well adapted to life indoors, especially within homes and apartments. Blood is their only food, and they can extract it from several animals, including those we usually keep as pets,” said Roberto Pereira, a UF/IFAS urban entomologist who conducts research and Extension programs on the biology and control of ants, cockroaches, bed bugs and other insects that live in and around human structures.

COMBINATION IMMUNOTHERAPY PRODUCES HIGH RESPONSE RATE IN EARLY RESULTS OF SYLVESTER TRIAL TARGETING HIGH-RISK FOLLICULAR LYMPHOMA
Surprising’ initial findings, presented at annual meeting for hematologists, leads investigators to expand the trial at Sylvester and into other research centers
MIAMI, FLORIDA – December 11, 2023 – Researchers conducting a Phase 2 clinical trial at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine say a new combination of antibody therapies produced a ‘surprisingly high’ response rate in patients with high-risk follicular lymphoma, a type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
Based on these initial findings – reported in an oral presentation at the 65th ASH Annual Meeting and Exposition in San Diego, California, Dec. 9-12 – the research team plans to expand the number of trial participants at Sylvester and into other cancer research centers. CELL THERAPY APPEARS SAFE AND EFFECTIVE FOR LYMPHOMA IN REMISSION
Sylvester study presented at ASH meetings shows that CAR-T immunotherapy remains a viable option for patients whose disease goes into remission before infusion
MIAMI, FLORIDA , December 11, 2023 – A study led by researchers at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine suggests that CAR-T immunotherapy remains a viable option for patients who have lymphoma that goes into remission before the cell therapy begins.
While the study doesn’t answer the question of whether cell therapy in remission is the right choice, it does say that it’s not the wrong choice.
“I don’t think it answers the question of: Should we give these patients cell therapy? But I think it answers the question that we can – that it’s safe and that it’s a reasonable strategy when you’re in that spot,” said Trent Wang, D.O., a Sylvester hematologist and cellular therapy specialist who presented study findings in an oral presentation at the 65th ASH Annual Meeting and Exposition, the American Society of Hematology’s conference taking place in San Diego, California, Dec. 9-12.

MULTICENTER STUDY AT SYLVESTER, OTHER ACADEMIC CENTERS SHOWS CAR-T CELL THERAPY SAFE, EFFECTIVE EVEN FOR HIGH-RISK PATIENTS
Sylvester physician-researcher to present results from U.S. Lymphoma CAR-T Cell Consortium at ASH 2023
MIAMI, FLORIDA (Dec. 12, 2023) – CAR-T cell therapy is a safe and effective treatment for diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), even for patients regarded as high risk due to comorbidities.
That’s the conclusion of a five-year analysis of results from the U.S. Lymphoma CAR-T Cell Consortium, a group of 17 academic cancer centers in the U.S. Their findings were presented at the American Society of Hematology’s 2023 annual meeting in San Diego.
“CAR-T has caused a paradigm shift in the treatment of patients with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma,” said Jay Y. Spiegel, MD, hematologist-oncologist at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and the study’s lead presenter at ASH. “Our findings support the vast potential of this therapy, even for high-risk patients, but highlight the need to maximize survivorship to ensure patients don’t end up dying from other causes.”

CHICAGO – December 12, 2023 – The American Medical Association (AMA) today identified the industry giants with the biggest shares of the markets for commercial health insurance, Medicare Advantage, and public health exchanges, where high levels of market concentration leaves millions of Americans with limited competitive options for health insurance.
The 2023 edition of Competition in Health Insurance: A Comprehensive Study of U.S. Markets examined 381 metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs), the 50 states and the District of Columbia and tabulated market shares for the two largest health insurance companies. It also analyzed state and MSA-level market concentration according to measures used in current federal antitrust guidelines. Markets that exceed a regulatory threshold set by federal guidelines are considered “highly concentrated” and lack adequate health insurer competition.

CMS PROVIDES CRITICAL TOOLS TO HELP IMPROVE ACCESS FOR MILLIONS WHO RECEIVE MEDICAID HOME- AND COMMUNITY-BASED SERVICES
New guidance outlines how states can establish important tools to connect individuals needing care with those qualified to provide it.
DECEMBER 12, 2023 – The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), through the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), today took another critical step to improve access to home- and community-based services (HCBS) by reminding states of tools to better connect direct support workers to individuals receiving Medicaid-covered HCBS, such as individuals with disabilities and older adults. The agency’s new guidance focuses on building and maintaining worker registries — worker management platforms that make qualified health workers easier to find — so more individuals receiving Medicaid-covered services can receive care in a setting of their choice. The guidance also notes significant federal funding available to help states build these registries thanks to President Biden’s American Rescue Plan (ARP).
