TEEN REGAINS VISION AFTER RECEIVING FIRST TOPICAL GENE THERAPY AT BASCOM PALMER EYE INSTITUTE AT UHEALTH
July 24, 2023- Antonio Vento has always loved to play video games on his PlayStation 4, particularly the popular game Minecraft where he can create different environments by using blocks, plants and other items. However, the 14-year-old hadn’t been able to do so for a long time because of severe vision loss.
Dr. Alfonso Sabater operated on Antonio Vento’s right eye at UM/Jackson Memorial Hospital to remove scar tissue obstructing the cornea, then began applying the specially formulated eye drop. Alfonso Sabater, M.D., Ph.D., removed scar tissue obstructing the cornea, then began applying the specially formulated eye drop.
“It was like looking through thick fog. I had trouble distinguishing the smaller numbers and letters in my games,” Antonio said. “For example, with Minecraft, when I needed the materials to build, I couldn’t see what I had to do. I had to stand up from my chair, walk over and get closer to the screen to be able to see.”
But after two successful surgeries and a first-of-its-kind gene therapy used by Bascom Palmer Eye Institute’s Alfonso Sabater, M.D., Ph.D., Antonio has the ability to build all the virtual worlds he wants.
“Now, I don’t have to get up from my chair. I can see the numbers and letters, and I can make out the small items I want to use in Minecraft. My vision for distance is so much better.”
Antonio’s success story extends beyond the screen. With his vision restored, his mother, Yunielkys “Yuni” Carvajal, calls the change “a rebirth, a new life.”

MANAGING ALLERGIES IN THE SUMMER: TIPS FOR DEALING WITH POLLEN AND OTHER ALLERGENS
Benjamin Klein, D.O.
July 25, 2023 – The summertime is often a wonderful time for doing things outside, but it’s also the worst time of year for people who suffer from allergies. Individuals with allergies may experience symptoms such as sneezing, itchy eyes, and a runny nose when the weather is warm because warm weather brings an increase in the amount of pollen and other allergens. However, there are measures that can be taken to reduce your contact with these irritants and protect yourself from experiencing allergy symptoms.
MINIMIZING EXPOSURE “The most important step you can take to reduce your exposure to pollen and other allergens is to keep windows closed, especially during peak hours of pollen production,” said Benjamin Klein, D.O., a family medicine doctor with the Broward Health Physician Group.
This is because pollen particles can easily blow in through open windows, leading to a buildup of allergens in your home or office. To further protect yourself from airborne allergens, you may want to consider wearing a mask when outdoors. Wearing a mask can help filter out pollen particles and other allergens that could otherwise be inhaled. If you have a respiratory condition such as asthma, it is even more important to wear a mask when outside.
