Only Six Minutes of Your Time
Physicians: Help Florida Seniors Make Informed Decisions

Miami-Dade and Broward County Medical Associations along with other county associations in Florida are promoting this survey:

Your input is extremely valuable to Florida’s seniors as they evaluate their options between Traditional Medicare and the various Medicare Advantage Plans available.

Each October, seniors are inundated with marketing and promotional materials promoting the benefits of switching from Traditional Medicare to Medicare Advantage. However, these materials often lack sufficient information about the rights and protections seniors may be relinquishing by making that switch.

The feedback provided by physicians through this survey will be instrumental in helping Florida’s seniors make informed decisions. Physician organizations across the state are working to develop an annual guide to help seniors and their caregivers assess plan performance and choose the option that best fits their needs.

We encourage you to invite fellow physicians to complete the survey. The more data we collect, the more comprehensive and impactful this guide will be for Florida’s senior community.

Memorial Healthcare System Launches Prostate Cancer Focal Therapy Program with First NanoKnife® Surgery in Broward at Memorial Cancer Institute

September 19, 2025- Memorial Healthcare System’s Memorial Cancer Institute is the first in Broward County to use the NanoKnife® system for prostate cancer treatment, marking a milestone in advanced cancer care for men in South Florida.

In late August, Utsav Bansal, MD, and Jonathan Silberstein, MD, urologic oncologists at Memorial Hospital West, successfully performed the first NanoKnife® procedure on 66-year-old Burley, who was diagnosed with stage 1, grade 3 prostate cancer.

NanoKnife® surgery, formally called irreversible electroporation (IRE) of the prostate, is a minimally invasive focal therapy that uses short, high-voltage electrical pulses to precisely target and destroy cancer cells while sparing surrounding healthy tissue. Often described as a “lumpectomy for the prostate,” this advanced approach provides patients with effective cancer control while reducing the risk of urinary and sexual side effects that often accompany traditional surgery or radiation.

Leading with Head and Heart: Dara Levan’s Enduring Service to Memorial Foundation

September 22, 2025 – When Fort Lauderdale resident Dara Levan first joined the Memorial Foundation Board of Directors more than a decade ago, she made it clear she was committed for the long haul. At the end of her first term, when the then-CEO recognized members rolling off the board, Levan immediately spoke up, “I’m a lifer. I’m not going anywhere.” True to her word, she has served three terms across three CEOs, briefly stepping away only to return with renewed dedication. Her tenure reflects a deep loyalty to Memorial’s mission of compassion, integrity and patient-centered care.

Levan’s impact has been inspiring. She was instrumental in launching the Pink Angels, a volunteer fundraising and advisory group that supports breast cancer patients through treatment and recovery. The committee funds wigs, acupuncture, therapy and survivorship programs that help women feel whole again. She also championed a new meditation room inside the Memorial Hospital Chapel, where patients and families can go for quiet reflection. Most recently, she has been working with the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Foundation and Business for the Arts Broward (BFA) to bring a mural to the hospital through BFA’s Art Walls Mural Program.

Florida Blue Foundation Invests in Community Programs to Strengthen Food Security and Combat Chronic Conditions

September. 22, 2025 – As the nation observes Hunger Action Month in September, the Florida Blue Foundation, the philanthropic affiliate of Florida Blue and part of the GuideWell family of companies, is awarding $3 million in grants supporting eight community-based food programs across the state to reduce the burden of chronic health conditions and increase access to healthy food in rural communities.

Why it matters: Food insecurity is one of the most significant social drivers of health in the country, contributing to increased risks of chronic diseases including obesity, heart disease, and certain types of cancers. In addition, higher food costs, recent funding cuts to local food banks, and other factors are driving increased demand for food aid.

By the numbers: 2.9 million Floridians lack access to healthy food—including 800,000 children.

What they’re saying:

“Food is the foundation of health, and yet, far too many individuals and families in Florida struggle to access the nutritious food they need,” said Susan Towler, executive director of the Florida Blue Foundation. “By partnering with organizations on the front lines of this issue, we are working together to extend their reach, deepen their impact, and increase access to the healthy foods families need to thrive.”

September 22, 2025 –Naples Comprehensive Health (NCH) announced today that Joseph Lamelas, MD, an internationally renowned cardiothoracic surgeon and pioneer in minimally invasive cardiac surgery, will join the NCH Rooney Heart Institute in Naples on October 15.

His work has revolutionized how valve surgery is performed worldwide.

Stem cells may offer new hope for end-stage kidney disease treatment

September 22 2025 – More than 4 million people worldwide have end-stage kidney disease that requires hemodialysis, a treatment in which a machine filters waste from the blood. Hemodialysis is a precursor to kidney transplant. To prepare for it, patients typically undergo surgery to connect an artery and a vein in the arm, creating an arteriovenous fistula (AVF) that allows blood to flow through the vein for treatment. However, AVF fails about 60 percent of the time due to vein narrowing. This is a major barrier to effective treatment.

Mayo Clinic researchers found that transplanting patients’ own stem cells from fat cells into the vein often helped prevent inflammation and vein narrowing. This could help millions of people with end-stage kidney disease tolerate dialysis longer, extending the time before they require a kidney transplant.

That is because these adult stem cells called mesenchymal stem cells secrete healing growth factors that appear to be effective for certain patients with an AVF, according to Sanjay Misra, M.D., a Mayo Clinic interventional radiologist and senior author of the study published in Science Translational Medicine.

Mayo Clinic’s AI tools help predict severe asthma risks in young children

September 23, 2025 –  — Mayo Clinic researchers have developed artificial intelligence (AI) tools that help identify which children with asthma face the highest risk of serious asthma exacerbation and acute respiratory infections. The study, published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, found the tools can detect those risks as early as age 3.

The work is part of Mayo Clinic’s precure strategic priority, which aims to predict and prevent serious diseases before they advance. Through innovative technologies and population-based studies, precure is designed to bring prevention-focused care directly to patients sooner.
