Physicians: Help Florida Seniors Make Informed Decisions

Miami-Dade and Broward County Medical Associations along with other county associations in Florida are promoting this survey:

Your input is extremely valuable to Florida’s seniors as they evaluate their options between Traditional Medicare and the various Medicare Advantage Plans available.

Each October, seniors are inundated with marketing and promotional materials promoting the benefits of switching from Traditional Medicare to Medicare Advantage. However, these materials often lack sufficient information about the rights and protections seniors may be relinquishing by making that switch.

The feedback provided by physicians through this survey will be instrumental in helping Florida’s seniors make informed decisions. Physician organizations across the state are working to develop an annual guide to help seniors and their caregivers assess plan performance and choose the option that best fits their needs.

We encourage you to invite fellow physicians to complete the survey. The more data we collect, the more comprehensive and impactful this guide will be for Florida’s senior community.

MEMORIAL HOSPITAL PEMBROKE NURSE CELEBRATES 50 YEARS OF CARING AT FACILITY

September 8, 2025 – She has worked in the same building longer than many of her colleagues have been alive, but that doesn’t phase Laurie Maas. As the hit song from early in her career says, the longtime nurse just ‘keeps on truckin.’

Maas, clinical manager of the Intensive Care Unit at Memorial Hospital Pembroke, has been a nurse for more than 56 years and has provided care at the facility since 1975. It was then Pembroke Pines General Hospital and wouldn’t be acquired by Memorial Healthcare System for another 20 years.

“50 years at this location is a remarkable accomplishment, but, if you know Laurie, it’s not surprising,” said Felicia Turnley, CEO of Memorial Hospital Pembroke. “She has nursing in her DNA and has always embraced serving patients, families, and the local community.”

Palm Beach County Medical Society Vaccine Statement

September 9, 2025:

We are aware of the recent proposals made by Florida Government officials to end all state vaccination mandates.

However, we at the Palm Beach County Medical Society continue to strongly suggest that children receive all of the historically recommended childhood vaccines, which have proven, and continue to be extremely effective in preventing the development of infection, as well as protecting others in the family and society as a whole. We encourage everyone to discuss with their physicians, which vaccines are recommended for them based upon their individual medical circumstances and prior immunization history.

There should be no doubt that vaccination along with sanitation have been, and still remain, the major medical interventions that changed the world for the better.

Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center Celebrates 500 WATCHMAN™ Procedures

AFib patients have a five times greater risk of stroke and are often prescribed long-term blood thinners, which can carry potentially serious side effects. The WATCHMAN™ offers an important alternative by providing permanent protection without the same bleeding risks associated with ongoing blood thinner use.

Biomarker could detect Alzheimer’s years before symptoms appear, study finds

Sept. 9, 2025 – TSPO, a key biomarker of brain inflammation, could help detect Alzheimer’s disease years before memory loss and other symptoms set in – potentially leading to advances in how the disease is diagnosed and treated, according to a study published in Acta Neuropathologica.

“This is the first study to really examine how early this biomarker increases and where it begins rising in the brain,” said Tomás R. Guilarte, lead researcher and dean of FIU’s Robert Stempel College of Public Health & Social Work. “If we can use this information to help delay Alzheimer’s progression by even five years, it can drastically improve patients’ lives and reduce disease prevalence.”

Guilarte, an internationally established expert on TSPO (or translocator protein 18 kDa) has studied the protein for more than three decades. His work helped establish it as a reliable imaging biomarker used in diagnosing neuroinflammation in various neurodegenerative, neurological and psychiatric disorders.
