TAMPA GENERAL HOSPITAL BRINGS NEW HOPE FOR PATIENTS WITH ADVANCED BLOOD CANCERS
Chimeric Antigen Receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy harnesses the power of a patient’s own immune system to destroy cancer cells; patient comfort and safety can be enhanced with Tampa General’s use of a novel biometric device.
Tampa, FL – March 3, 2024 – As part of its commitment to harness innovative advances in cancer care, the Tampa General Hospital (TGH) Cancer Institute has added a novel approach to its therapeutic armamentarium for the treatment of patients with aggressive forms of B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphomas and other types of blood cancers.
The Cancer Institute is focusing on enhancing the safety of Chimeric Antigen Receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy, an immunological treatment that uses the body’s own immune T cells to find and kill cancer cells.
Normally, a person’s T cells are responsible for detecting noncancerous “intruders,” such as viruses, bacteria and early cancers but fail to do so in advanced disease. However, by genetically modifying these cells to recognize the unique proteins that are present on the surface of cancer cells, it’s possible to program them to destroy cancerous cells.

CLEVELAND CLINIC RESEARCHERS UNCOVER HOW VIRUS CAUSES CANCER, POINT TO POTENTIAL TREATMENT
Kaposi sarcoma-associated herpesvirus activates a specific pathway to drive viral persistent infection and cell growth, paving the way for tumors to form
March 1, 2024, Port St. Lucie, Fla: Cleveland Clinic researchers have discovered a key mechanism used by Kaposi’s sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV), also known as human herpesvirus 8 (HHV8), to induce cancer. The research points to effective new treatment options for KSHV-associated cancers, including Kaposi’s sarcoma, primary effusion lymphoma, and HHV8-associated multicentric Castleman disease.
“Our findings have significant implications: viruses cause between 10% to 20% of cancers worldwide, a number that is constantly increasing as new discoveries are made. Treating virus-induced cancers with standard cancer therapies can help shrink tumors that are already there, but it doesn’t fix the underlying problem of the virus,” said Jun Zhao, Ph.D., of Cleveland Clinic Florida Research & Innovation Center. “Understanding how pathogens transform a healthy cell into a cancer cell uncovers exploitable vulnerabilities and allows us to make and repurpose existing drugs that can effectively treat virus-associated malignancies.”
The Nature Communications study, led by Dr. Zhao, reveals that KSHV manipulates two human enzymes called CDK6 and CAD to reshape the way human cells produce new nucleotides – the building blocks of DNA and RNA – and process glucose. The changes to how infected cells grow and how KSHV persists put cells at a much higher risk of forming tumors and play a crucial role in causing cancer.

NIH trial reveals need for more accurate screening in Black people and cisgender women.
March 4, 2024 – The elevated cardiovascular disease risk among people with HIV is even greater than predicted by a standard risk calculator in several groups, including Black people and cisgender women, according to analyses from a large international clinical trial primarily funded by the National institutes of Health and presented at the 2024 Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections (CROI) in Denver. The risk of having a first major cardiovascular event was also higher than previously predicted for people from high-income regions and those whose HIV replication was not suppressed below detectable levels.
Researchers examined the incidence of major adverse cardiovascular events in people who did not take pitavastatin or other statins during the Randomized Trial to Prevent Vascular Events in HIV (REPRIEVE) trial, a large clinical trial to test whether pitavastatin—a cholesterol-lowering drug known to prevent cardiovascular disease—could prevent major adverse cardiovascular events, such as heart attacks and strokes, in people with HIV. The scientists compared the incidence of cardiovascular events in the trial to the incidence predicted by standard estimates, which use the American College of Cardiology and American Heart Association’s Pooled Cohort Risk Equations (PCE) score.

Pregnant people are estimated to be three times more likely to acquire HIV through sexual intercourse than similarly aged people who are not pregnant.
The large clinical study was conducted in South Africa, Uganda and Zimbabwe by the Microbicide Trials Network, an international research network funded by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of the National Institutes of Health, with co-funding from the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development and the National Institute of Mental Health.
