BROWARD HEALTH RECEIVES TWO A+ SCORES FROM FITCH RATINGS
March 14, 2024 – Fitch Ratings assigned an A+ Issuer Default Rating to the North Broward Hospital District, which operates as Broward Health, and assigned an A+ long-term rating to the $297.3 North Broward Hospital District Revenue Bonds, Series 2017B.
The A+ ratings reflect Broward Health’s “strong revenue defensibility” and “solid balance sheet metrics.” The ratings also acknowledge “considerable progress over the last three years toward improving operating performance,” according to a press release issued by Fitch. Fitch credits the strong Broward Health leadership team and North Broward Hospital District Board of Commissioners, the governing body of Broward Health, with renewing its focus on the core business, greater physician alignment and growth opportunities.
“Our focus on enhancing and expanding healthcare services while improving operational efficiencies has earned us not one, but two A+ ratings for financial performance,” said Shane Strum, President & CEO of Broward Health. “I am proud of our team’s dedication to providing exceptional care to patients while optimizing our financial performance.”
According to the filing, in Fitch’s opinion, Broward Health’s “financial profile is very strong.” Fitch reported that Broward Health stabilized its operating profile and operating earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) margin, which is a measure of core corporate profitability. Fitch added that growing volume, good cost management and growth opportunities, which include Broward Health’s expanding footprint, physician recruitment and new partnerships, point to EBITDA margins remaining in line.

UPDATED NEWS INFORMATION FROM THE LAST FOUR DAYS IN SOUTH FLORIDA |
MEMORIAL HEALTHCARE SYSTEM HONORED AS OLDEST MEMBER OF GREATER HOLLYWOOD CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
March 14, 2024 – January 1, 1960 was a Friday, gas was selling for 31 cents a gallon, and Senator John F. Kennedy wasn’t yet a presidential candidate. It was also the day Memorial Healthcare System joined the Greater Hollywood Chamber of Commerce.
More than 64 years later, Memorial is still aligned with its community business organization, and was honored with the chamber’s “Legacy Award” for being its oldest member. Formal recognition took place during a luncheon at the Diplomat Beach Resort.
“The impact Memorial Healthcare System has had on our organization is immeasurable,” said Marie Suarez, executive director of the Greater Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. “They’ve provided leadership, spread our mission and vision, and, most importantly, provided high-quality healthcare that helps attract people and businesses to our city.”
Memorial Regional Hospital CEO Peter Powers and Caitlin Stella, CEO at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, are current chamber board members. Former Memorial leaders Frank V. Sacco, Zeff Ross, and Douglas Zaren are just a few of the many that have helped shape the chamber in the last six-plus decades.

SYLVESTER RESEARCHERS, COLLABORATORS CALL FOR GREATER INVESTMENT IN BEREAVEMENT CARE
Viewpoint in The Lancet Public Health Notes Current Funding, Resources Inadequate to Address This Public Health Issue
MIAMI, FLORIDA March 15, 2024 – The public health toll from bereavement is well-documented in the medical literature, with bereaved persons at greater risk for many adverse outcomes, including mental health challenges, decreased quality of life, health care neglect, cancer, heart disease, suicide, and death. Now, in a paper published in The Lancet Public Health, researchers sound a clarion call for greater investment, at both the community and institutional level, in establishing support for grief-related suffering.
The authors emphasized that increased mortality worldwide caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, suicide, drug overdose, homicide, armed conflict, and terrorism have accelerated the urgency for national- and global-level frameworks to strengthen the provision of sustainable and accessible bereavement care. Unfortunately, current national and global investment in bereavement support services is woefully inadequate to address this growing public health crisis, said researchers with Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and collaborating organizations.
They proposed a model for transitional care that involves firmly establishing bereavement support services within healthcare organizations to ensure continuity of family-centered care while bolstering community-based support through development of “compassionate communities” and a grief-informed workforce. The model highlights the responsibility of the health system to build bridges to the community that can help grievers feel held as they transition.

EARLY SUCCESS LEADS TO HOSPITAL CARE AT HOME℠ EXPANSION
After launching Cleveland Clinic Hospital Care At Home℠ (HCAH) in April 2023 to serve patients requiring acute hospital care at Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital in Vero Beach, Cleveland Clinic has expanded the program to Cleveland Clinic Tradition Hospital, Cleveland Clinic Martin North Hospital and Cleveland Clinic Martin South Hospital. Cleveland Clinic is now exploring the next phase in the multihospital expansion.
“The way we deliver care today is not how we will deliver care tomorrow,” says Richard Rothman, MD, Chief Medical Operations Officer for Cleveland Clinic in Florida and Vice Chief of the Integrated Hospital Care Institute for Cleveland Clinic. “Cleveland Clinic Hospital Care At Home is a glimpse into the future of healthcare delivery.”
Model of care
Patient eligibility to be hospitalized at home is based on a complete medical evaluation and determined in either the Emergency Department or within one of the hospital’s inpatient units. “Individuals who meet the criteria are offered the choice to receive hospital-level care at home or in a traditional hospital setting,” says Dr. Rothman, noting they must live within a 30-mile radius of the hospital to participate.
Once admitted, patients are set up at home with technology to enable transmission of biometric data, bidirectional communication, and coordination with the hospital’s Clinically Integrated Virtual Command Center (CIViC) located in Vero Beach. The CIViC team is comprised of physicians, advanced practice providers, and nurses who are responsible for directing patient care.

TAMPA GENERAL HOSPITAL EMPLOYS NEW ULTRASOUND THERAPY DESIGNED TO TREAT LIFE-THREATENING HYPERTENSION
Tampa, FL March 14, 2024 – Doctors with the Tampa General Hospital (TGH) Heart & Vascular Institute are the first in the region to use an innovative new technology to control hypertension or uncontrolled high blood pressure. The Paradise Ultrasound Renal Denervation (RDN) System by Recor Medical uses ultrasound energy to ablate the renal nerves and lower blood pressure. The procedure is minimally invasive and may be performed in an outpatient setting, allowing most patients to go home the same day.
If the procedure becomes a common therapy, experts say, it could help reduce diagnoses of high blood pressure, which directly or indirectly kills about 700,000 Americans each year.
“This is an exciting weapon in the war against the disease,’’ said Dr. Fadi Matar, Cardiac Cath Lab Medical Director & Cardiology Section Chief at TGH, and associate professor and interim director of the Division of Cardiovascular Sciences at the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine. “It’s critical to bring it under control, and this technology offers a novel way to treat it.’’
Patients with life-threatening – or resistant − hypertension that can’t be controlled by traditional therapies are candidates for the FDA-approved procedure. It uses ultrasound to deliver a 360-degree ring of energy, reaching about 80 percent of the sympathetic nerves around the renal arteries. This ablation reduces the overactivity that can lead to hypertension. A hydro-cooling balloon circulates sterile water during the procedure, which protects the arterial wall.

MASTER OF OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY PROGRAM TARGETS OT ASSISTANTS
OTA to MOT pathway requires practical experience but not a Bachelor’s
The University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences (USAHS) in Miami has added a unique hybrid immersion pathway for Occupational Therapy Assistants without bachelor’s degrees who are ready to grow professionally and obtain a Master of Occupational Therapy (MOT). Students with bachelor’s degrees are also eligible for the hybrid immersion MOT. The priority deadline for 2024 Summer and Fall applications is March 15, 2024.
Starting in May 2024, the hybrid immersion format is the latest addition to USAHS Miami’s pathways to an MOT degree. One of a handful of universities in the country dedicated to graduate studies in rehabilitative sciences, USAHS has a track record of innovative formats that include full-time studies as well as hybrid options that blend online learning with in-person lab work. Rolling admissions and a trimester structure add flexibility. Founded in St. Augustine, Florida in 1979, the University now has five campuses in California, Florida, and Texas.

WHEN IT’S TIME TO LEAVE THE HOSPITAL: ENSURING POST-ACUTE CARE ACCESS
By Mary Mayhew, FHA President and CEO
Achieving superior health care outcomes depends on delivering the right care at the right time in the right setting. Whether that’s a primary care clinic, hospital emergency department (ED), inpatient unit, or post-acute facility, patients’ outcomes depend on getting timely, medically necessary care appropriate for their condition and needs.
Unfortunately, today, too many patients remain unnecessarily hospitalized because of delays in securing appropriate post-acute placement. These are placements in skilled nursing facilities, assisted living facilities, home health, hospice, long-term acute care settings, behavioral health units, and rehabilitation facilities.
Patients who no longer require a hospital level of care because of their medical status or needs are staying hospitalized because of delays in transitioning to another, more appropriate care setting. The results for patients are avoidable hospital days and impediments in progressing in their healing journey. The results for hospitals are operational inefficiencies and increased costs. The result for the health care system … and for anyone needing to be hospitalized … is a potential lack of inpatient capacity to admit in a timely manner patients from the emergency departments. With ED boarding times steadily increasing, getting patients from the ED to a medical/surgical unit, if necessary, is critical for patient care and operational efficiency. That cannot occur if patients medically ready to be discharged from the hospital cannot do so.
Statewide, patients with an average hospital stay of less than 10 days before being medically ready for discharge remain in the hospital for an average of 3.5 more days while hospital staff try to secure post-acute placement, according to a survey by the Florida Hospital Association. Patients whose length of stay before being ready for discharge exceeds 10 days remain in the hospital for an average of 27 more days before being successfully transitioned to post-acute care. More than 50 percent of these patients waiting for more than 10 days are awaiting discharge to a skilled nursing facility. This means patients are staying in hospital beds longer than necessary for their medical needs.

DABDOUB LAW FIRM PROVIDES GUIDANCE, COURT EXPERTISE TO PHYSICIANS WITH DISABILITY INSURANCE CLAIMS
It is difficult enough to be faced with a disability, and it’s even more challenging when the person dealing with the disability has to pursue a case against an insurance company to get the benefits they deserve. For the past 20 years, Dabdoub Law Firm, a nationally recognized disability insurance law firm headquartered in Coral Gables, has been helping clients, including physicians, through the maze that is the disability legal field.
“The biggest hurdle for our clients is knowing how to navigate the process with the insurance company; it’s extremely cumbersome,” explained founder and attorney Edward Dabdoub. “In many of these cases, federal law governs the process of submitting a claim for disability benefits to insurance companies, and there’s an entire appeals process that the client has to go through with the insurance company that denied the claim before they can even file a lawsuit.
“Most attorneys don’t even understand how that process works, much less a layperson or a person struggling with a physical or cognitive disability,” he added. “On the other hand, the insurance company is very well aware of the process and what should be done. There’s very little transparency in any of this.”
He adds that disability claims can be especially difficult to win for physicians, as most insurance companies either don’t understand or refuse to understand the unique nature of the physician’s occupation.
“Especially in a surgical practice, for example, instead of looking at how important certain procedures are to the occupation as a whole, the insurance company analyzes CPT billing code information and makes decisions on the importance of these duties based on a cold mathematical review while ignoring the qualitative importance of duties that define these medical specialties,” said Dabdoub.
He gives the example of a recent case in which he represented one of the top liver transplant surgeons in the country who had a wrist injury that made the surgeon unable to perform liver surgeries longer than five hours, though he was able to continue teaching and performing some other surgeries. Because the plaintiff was able to perform other aspects of his job, the insurance company denied his claim for total disability coverage.
“There are certain procedures that are so unique that they define that physician’s occupation even if those procedures are not done in volume,” said Dabdoub, who won the case, providing the client with full coverage for his disability. “For physicians especially, you cannot get more granular than that in terms of the type of attorney you need; finding someone who understands the medical specialty and how to present the occupation in order to win these cases.”

NIH RESEARCHERS IDENTIFY BRAIN CONNECTIONS ASSOCIATED WITH ADHD IN YOUTH
Large study finds atypical interactions between the frontal cortex and information processing centers deep in the brain.
March 13, 2024 – Researchers at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) have discovered that symptoms of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are tied to atypical interactions between the brain’s frontal cortex and information processing centers deep in the brain. The researchers examined more than 10,000 functional brain images of youth with ADHD and published their results in the American Journal of Psychiatry. The study was led by researchers at NIH’s National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) and National Human Genome Research Institute.
Luke Norman, Ph.D., a staff scientist in the NIMH Office of the Clinical Director, and colleagues analyzed brain images supplied by more than 8,000 youth with and without ADHD sourced from six different functional imaging datasets.
