‘CURVED’ WALKING AND A DEPTH CAMERA: NEW TOOL DETECTS EARLY COGNITIVE DECLINE

FAU Engineering Study First to Reveal More Gait Impairments in Older Adults by ‘Throwing Them a Curve’

March 12, 2024 – A first-of-its-kind study suggests that to detect subtle gait impairments in older adults that often are prevalent in the early stages of cognitive decline, “throw them a curve.”

Gait analysis, examining the way an individual stands and walks, is emerging as a valuable, non-invasive complement to cognitive assessments that aid in early diagnosis and management. In clinical settings, gait and balance tests typically focus on a straight walking path.

This new study ventures into a different realm – curved path walking – a more natural yet complex activity. Straight walking is a rhythmic and simpler activity, whereas walking on a curving path requires greater cognitive and motor skills such as a transition time to change directions and correct balance.

DELTA-8-THC USE REPORTED BY 11% OF 12TH GRADERS IN 2023

Use of the psychoactive cannabis product is higher in states without existing delta-8 regulations or cannabis legalization, NIH-funded study finds.

MARCH 12, 2024 – Approximately 11% of 12th-grade students across the United States reported past-year use of delta-8-tetrahydrocannabinol (delta-8-THC, or delta-8 for short), according to an analysis of data(link is external) from the 2023 Monitoring the Future survey, which is funded by the National Institutes of Health. Delta-8 is a psychoactive substance that is typically derived from hemp, a variety of the Cannabis sativa plant. Delta-8 has intoxicating effects similar to delta-9-THC(link is external) (delta-9), the primary THC component responsible for the “high” people may experience from using cannabis.

The researchers measured delta-8 use for the first time in 2023 to investigate the drug’s popularity among teens as more hemp-derived THC products enter the market and become more accessible. Studies show an association between cannabis use and negative health impacts for teens, underlining the importance of monitoring use of delta-8 and other cannabis products among younger people.
