Mount Sinai Medical Center Chief of Orthopedic Surgery Publishes Technique on Minimally Invasive Procedure for Achilles Tendonitis
Procedure reduces recovery period, pain, and post-surgery complications and improves outcomes, according to new article published by the official journal of the American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society.
MIAMI, FL — September 10, 2024— Led by Dr. Ettore Vulcano, Chief of Orthopedic Surgery at Mount Sinai Medical Center, a new study explores a minimally invasive procedure to treat a common foot and ankle ailment (Achilles tendinopathy) by analyzing patient-reported outcomes with a minimum two-year patient follow-up.
The keyhole procedure, dubbed a percutaneous Zadek osteotomy (ZO), is a minimally invasive technique that can significantly decrease pain and provide patient with relief in as little as six weeks. Traditional open surgical approaches can take as long as one year for full recovery.
First-line treatment includes conservative therapies such as anti-inflammatory medications, activity limitation, physical therapy, and footwear modification. Eccentric loading therapy and shockwave therapy have demonstrated some success in this patient population. However, these non-operative strategies fail in more than 80% of cases, and surgical intervention is considered more effective.

Lauderhill Grandmother Reclaims Mobility with Broward Heath
September 9, 2024 – Betty Joe Green is an active and vibrant individual who enjoys walking on the beach, working out, swimming and spending time with her grandchildren. However, her active lifestyle was severely interrupted when she developed unbearable back pain that began impacting her life.

The 71-year-old retired hairstylist decided to seek medical attention after six months of constant pain that showed no signs of improvement. She was referred to Daniel Klinger, M.D., a neurosurgeon at Broward Health. Following an X-ray and MRI, Dr. Klinger determined that the pain was coming from her lower spine and diagnosed her with lumbar spondylolisthesis and spinal stenosis. Cassidy, Booker, Heinrich Introduce Bill to Protect Dialysis Patients
September 11, 2024 – WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA), Cory Booker (D-NJ), and Martin Heinrich (D-NM) introduced the Restore Protections for Dialysis Patients Act to ensure individuals with End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD), or kidney failure, continue to have access to private health care.
The legislation follows the 2022 Supreme Court ruling, Marietta v. DaVita, that allowed private health plans to carve out kidney care services, including dialysis treatments and access to nephrologists, prematurely pushing ESRD patients onto Medicare. This shift causes a disruption in coverage for patients and their families and shifts a significant financial burden onto taxpayers.

That is why we launched the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline two years ago and why we continue to invest in suicide prevention programs that help save lives across this country.”

Emergency department screening more than doubles detection of syphilis cases
NIH-supported study shows potential of strategy to reach people with and without symptoms.
September 10, 2024 – Providing optional syphilis tests to most people seeking care at a large emergency department led to a dramatic increase in syphilis screening and diagnosis, according to a National Institutes of Health (NIH)-supported study of nearly 300,000 emergency department encounters in Chicago. Most people diagnosed had no symptoms, which suggests that symptom-based testing strategies alone could miss opportunities to diagnose and treat people with syphilis. The results were published today in the journal Open Forum Infectious Diseases.

Atypical metabolite levels at birth may increase SIDS risk
NIH-funded study suggests checking for metabolite pattern at birth could provide means to estimate SIDS risk.
September 11, 2024 – Newborns who had an atypical pattern of metabolites were more than 14 times as likely to die of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), compared to infants who had more typical metabolic patterns, according to a study funded in part by the National Institutes of Health. Metabolites are molecules produced by the body’s various chemical reactions. Researchers found that infants who died of SIDS had a specific pattern of metabolites compared to infants who lived to their first year. The researchers believe that checking for this pattern could provide a way to identify infants at risk for SIDS. The study was conducted by Scott Oltman, M.S., of the University of California San Francisco School of Medicine, and colleagues. It appears in JAMA Pediatrics.

Experimental blood test predicts risk for developing COPD, other severe respiratory diseases
September 10, 2024 – A scientific team supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has created a preclinical blood test to identify adults most likely to develop severe respiratory conditions, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The blood test analyzes 32 proteins that scientists determined accurately predicted an adult with an increased likelihood for requiring medical care for or dying from severe respiratory illness. The risk score was based on lung health data collected from nearly 2,500 U.S. adults over a 30-year period. The findings were published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine(link is external).
