Wayne Brackin Shares Thoughts on New Challenges Coming This Hurricane Season

According to models from AccuWeather and Colorado State University, the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season is predicted to be above average, with more storms and hurricanes than the 30-year average. While an active season is nothing new in Florida, this year the state is facing other issues, including the current administration’s cuts to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the National Weather Service (NWS) and FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency).

More than a dozen positions have been cut at NWS offices across Florida, which is responsible for weather forecasts and warnings when there are storm threats. Approximately one-third of FEMA’s staff has been let go or have accepted buyouts. This could not only affect the timeliness and accuracy of forecasts, but also any assistance communities may require after a natural disaster.

“We’ve been paying close attention to what’s happening with NOAA and the NWS and FEMA, all of which are under some form of duress from these changes,” said Wayne Brackin, president and CEO of KIDZ Medical Services, and former Baptist Health South Florida executive who’s been recognized for leading hospital and health system hurricane and emergency preparedness efforts.

“What’s going on with FEMA is still a moving target, so no one can speak with absolute certainly yet. But if the FEMA staff was 6,000 people and 2,000 are no longer there, it’s safe to say we can expect to see some impact downstream.

ACHE of South Florida Member Spotlight: Paul Hakimata

By Lois Thomson

Paul Hakimata is a problem solver.  Hakimata currently works in Precision Care at the Molecular Genetic Pathology Lab at Memorial Regional Hospital South and is also a principal investigator for the Memorial Cancer Institute and Florida Atlantic University collaborative.  As a specialist in molecular genomics, he explained, “What we do is very complex testing; we look at the DNA and RNA of patients, and we look at mutations and try to match targeted drugs to them.”

He said those in the lab try to determine what the mutations mean, and the information then goes into databases where the drugs are listed, and are matched with the particular drug – if one is available.  “My role is to implement new tests, develop protocols to troubleshoot, and streamline the turnaround time.”

Hakimata pointed out that normal turnaround time is about 30 days, whereas most other lab tests are done in a day.  “As a field we’re far behind, but simply because it’s very complex and the work flow itself is very difficult.  I come up with strategies to streamline so the patients can actually get their medications faster.  That’s something I took on myself, and it influences everything we do.”

Because he likes to problem solve, Hakimata enjoys this work and admitted, “I get bored very quickly if every day is the same thing, so I let my team focus on what they do best, and let all the problems come to me so I can enhance my team’s performance.”

His current work wasn’t Hakimata’s first choice.  “I’ve been in this field for 25 years now, always in research, but right after my wife’s passing (nearly 10 years ago) I decided to move into the clinical world to see where I could help.”

Naples Children & Education Foundation and Nicklaus Children’s Pediatric Behavioral Health Program Now Delivering Care in Collier County

May 29, 2025 –  In recognition of May as Mental Health Awareness Month, Nicklaus Children’s Health System is proud to highlight the successful launch and ongoing expansion of its pediatric behavioral health services in Collier County. These services are being delivered through a generous $1 million grant from the Naples Children & Education Foundation (NCEF). A Safe Haven for Newborns Seeks a Permanent Home

Join Us In Building Our New Home

Miami, FL — May 29, 2025 —The Gloria M. Silverio Foundation, 501(c)(3), d/b/a/ A Safe Haven for Newborns has one mission, to end infant abandonment. In order to meet and expand the services offered to teens and women in crisis, the Foundation is looking to purchase a permanent structure they can call home.

Infant abandonment transcends socioeconomic status, ethnic background, and age. The primary factors that connect this group of teenagers and women who face an unexpected pregnancy are isolation and denial. Isolation can lead them to keep their pregnancy a secret and dispose of the infant in unsafe places once the infant is born, such as dumpsters, canals, or roadside, resulting in the infant’s demise. Through education, prevention, community involvement, and direct assistance, A Safe Haven for Newborns seeks to reach them before they do the unthinkable.

The new building will house the offices of The Gloria M. Silverio Foundation. “A new home will enable us to grow the organization’s infrastructure and focus on long-term sustainability,” said Founder Nick Silverio. The structure was designed with functionality in mind and an eye towards the future by Coastal Construction and the Murphy Family. It will include a space where the Safe Haven personnel can work together to offer more services, grow the outreach program and increase community awareness.

“We see the building as being a multi-functional space,” said Silverio. The major portion of the building will house the administrative offices, working space for volunteers, a meeting area, and dedicated space to house the 24/7 helpline personnel. Another area would be a thrift shop for donated new or gently worn baby items with its separate entrance. The last section would be leased as office space.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. For Florida’s community behavioral health providers, mental health is a priority every day.

May 29, 2025 – To honor this ongoing commitment, the Florida Behavioral Health Association (FBHA) is featuring a month-long video campaign with heartfelt testimonials from social workers, clinicians, program supervisors, and leaders across the state, sharing why they have committed their careers to mental health and what inspires them. Immunotherapy boosts chemotherapy in combating stage 3 colon cancer

By: Alison Satake

June 1, 2025 – ROCHESTER, Minn. — Colon cancer is the third most prevalent form of cancer in the U.S., and while screening has helped detect and prevent colon cancer from spreading, major advancements in treating colon cancer have lagged.

Now, new research led by Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Cancer Center found that adding immunotherapy to chemotherapy after surgery for patients with stage 3 (node-positive) colon cancer — and with a specific genetic makeup called deficient DNA mismatch repair (dMMR) — was associated with a 50% reduction in cancer recurrence and death compared to chemotherapy alone. Approximately 15% of people diagnosed with colon cancer exhibit dMMR and, to date, these tumors appear less sensitive to chemotherapy. The results of the multi-center study were presented during a plenary session at the 2025 American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Annual Meeting in Chicago.

“The findings from our study represent a major advance in the adjuvant treatment of dMMR stage 3 colon cancer and will now change the treatment for this type of cancer,” says oncologist Frank Sinicrope, M.D., who led the study. “It’s extremely rewarding to be able to offer our patients a new treatment regimen that can reduce the risk of recurrence and improve their chances of survival.”

CMS Launches Oversight Initiative on Hospitals Performing Experimental Sex Trait Modification Procedures

CMS Launches Oversight Initiative on Hospitals Performing Experimental Sex Trait Modification Procedures

May 28,2025- The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) today sent a letter to select hospitals performing pediatric sex trait modification procedures outlining urgent concerns with both the quality standards adherence and profits related to these harmful procedures

“These are irreversible, high-risk procedures being conducted on vulnerable children, often at taxpayer expense,” said CMS Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz. “Hospitals accepting federal funds are expected to meet rigorous quality standards and uphold the highest level of stewardship when it comes to public resources—we will not turn a blind eye to procedures that lack a solid foundation of evidence and may result in lifelong harm.”

CMS has previously noted the lack of reliable clinical evidence supporting the quality and safety of puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, and sex trait modification surgeries for minors. These procedures also raise serious questions about informed consent protocols, adverse outcomes, and financial incentives driving these interventions, many of which are reimbursed by federal health care programs.

HHS Office for Civil Rights Settles HIPAA Ransomware Cybersecurity Investigation with Comstar, LLC

Settlement Marks OCR’s 13th Ransomware Enforcement Action and 9th Enforcement Action in OCR’s Risk Analysis Initiative

May 30, 2025 – Today, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (“HHS”), Office for Civil Rights (“OCR”) announced a settlement with Comstar, LLC (“Comstar”), a Massachusetts company that provides billing, collection, and related services to non-profit and municipal emergency ambulance services, concerning potential violations of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) Security Rule. The settlement resolves an OCR investigation concerning a ransomware breach that affected 585,621 individuals.

OCR enforces the HIPAA Privacy, Security, and Breach Notification Rules, which set forth the requirements that covered entities (health plans, health care clearinghouses, and most health care providers), and business associates – such as Comstar – must follow to protect the privacy and security of protected health information (PHI). The Risk Analysis provision of the Security Rule requires a regulated organization to conduct an accurate and thorough assessment of the potential risks and vulnerabilities to the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of electronic protected health information (ePHI) held by that organization.

NIH scientists pioneer promising treatment for intractable cancer pain

RTX is a non-addictive pain therapy derived from a cactus-like plant.

National Institute of Health (NIH) scientists report that a first-in-human clinical trial of a new therapy based on the plant-derived molecule resiniferatoxin (RTX) shows that it is a safe and effective agent for pain control in patients with intractable cancer pain. Researchers tested a single injection of small quantities of RTX into the lumbar cerebral spinal fluid (by lumbar puncture) of advanced-stage cancer patients and found that it reduced their reported worst pain intensity by 38% and their use of pain-relieving opioids by 57%.

“The effects are immediate,” said Andrew Mannes, M.D., lead study author and chief of the NIH Clinical Center Department of Perioperative Medicine. “This is a potential new therapy from a new family of drugs that gives people with severe cancer pain an opportunity to return some normality to their lives.”

The trial enrolled research participants with terminal end-stage cancer who were among the 15% of cancer patients unable to find pain relief from standard of care pain interventions, including vast quantity of opiates without relief.

Learn CPR this summer – you just might save a life

American Heart Association offers summer safety checklist for families ahead of CPR & AED Awareness Week, June 1-7

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. May 27, 2025 — Palm Beach County and Treasure Coast schools are out for the summer, and the American Heart Association is calling on parents and families to learn Hands-Only CPR so this summer break can be as safe as it is fun.

More than 350,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur in the United States each year[1], and 90% of people who have a cardiac arrest will not survive.

According to the American Heart Association, more than 23,000 children experience cardiac arrest each year, with nearly 40% related to sports and nearly 20% occurring in infants. If performed immediately, CPR can double or even triple a person’s chance of survival, yet less than half of people actually receive the help they need from a bystander. With school out for summer, children will be away from teachers and coaches who might be trained in CPR, making it crucial for parents to know this life-saving skill.
