TAMPA GENERAL HOSPITAL DIGESTIVE HEALTH CENTER OFFERS UPDATED SCREENINGS FOR NONALCOHOLIC FATTY LIVER DISEASE
Dr. Sonja Olsen, a board-certified internist, gastroenterologist, and transplant hepatologist, provides screenings for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease which is frequently undiagnosed and can cause serious health conditions.
Palm Beach Gardens, FL – October 12, 2023 ─ October is National Liver Awareness Month and Tampa General Hospital Digestive Health Center, formerly TGH Gastro Group of the Palm Beaches, is following the new guidelines of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinology (AACE) for the early screening and diagnosis of an often undetected condition called nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Dr. Sonja K. Olsen, a board-certified gastroenterologist and hepatologist, is trained in the AACE’s updated screening for NAFLD and offers it at TGH Digestive Health Center.
According to the AACE, a vast majority of Americans with NAFLD, nearly 96 percent, are unaware they have the chronic disease in which fat accumulates in the liver. NAFLD can affect liver function and result in a range of progressive conditions. When left untreated, NAFLD can result in liver scarring or fibrosis, cirrhosis, liver cancer or death.
The AACE advises that individuals who have risk factors such as Type 2 diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure and high cholesterol, or metabolic syndrome should be screened for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease by their primary doctor or endocrinologist. NAFLD screening consists of a FibroScan, a noninvasive diagnostic device used to measure the fat content of the liver, and liver stiffness, which is a marker for scarring. Individuals with abnormal results will be referred to a specialist for further evaluation and management.

FORT MYERS, Fla. October 13, 2023 – Childhood Cancer Awareness month in September and events for Barbara’s Friends, including the Frank Haskell Endowment Fund match, raised more than $375,000 to benefit kids with cancer at Golisano Children’s Hospital.
The 6th Annual Clips for Cancer, presented by Florida Radiology Consultants, is the catalyst and signature event that brings the community together and inspired record giving. “We are humbled and gratified by this year’s record-breaking total from everything that happened in 30 days. The community rallied to inspire and empower children with cancer,” said Amy Frith, senior director of Barbara’s Friends. “We are so grateful for generous donors, our many event sponsors and the local businesses that held promotions during September to ensure that no child is denied lifesaving care or turned away because of their family’s inability to cover the cost of treatment. PHILIPS VISUAL PATIENT AVATAR PIONEERS AT-A-GLANCE PATIENT DATA FOR FASTER, BETTER DECISION-MAKING IN THE OPERATING ROOM
Animations, colors, and shapes help to improve poor situational awareness, which is responsible for 81.5% of anesthesia-related errors
Amsterdam, the Netherlands- October 13, 2023 – Royal Philips (NYSE: PHG, AEX: PHIA), a global leader in health technology, today announced the launch of Visual Patient Avatar, a revolutionary new monitoring solution that translates critical, yet complex patient data into a straightforward visual design as an easy-to-understand avatar display.
In today’s operating rooms (ORs), time constraints and information overload contribute to poor situational awareness, which is responsible for 81.5% of anesthesia-related errors [1]. In the past, monitors in the OR told the patient’s story by displaying vital signs and numbers that took time to interpret, potentially affecting the caregiver’s ability to absorb information and make timely clinical decisions. Visual Patient Avatar is designed to improve situational awareness with ground-breaking elegance by visualizing vital information through animations, colors and shapes. By glancing at a monitor with Visual Patient Avatar, anesthesiologists and nurse anesthetists can recall and process critical data more quickly, efficiently and confidently – ultimately helping to save lives. This new view has the potential to provide clinical teams with the peace of mind to concentrate on what matters most and prepare for what may come next.

NIH RESEARCHERS WORK TO PRESERVE FERTILITY FOR PEOPLE UNDERGOING GENE THERAPY
Novel conditioning agent shows promise in animal models of sickle cell disease.
October 12, 2023 – Researchers at the National Institutes of Health have created a novel gene therapy procedure that could preserve fertility in people with sickle cell disease and other genetic blood conditions. Infertility is a high-risk and long-term side effect associated with current bone marrow transplantation and gene therapy approaches to treat sickle cell disease. It is a common reason people of reproductive age give for not pursuing these therapies.
The study, which appears in Nature Communications, describes the successful testing in animals of an antibody-drug conjugate, or conditioning agent, that exclusively targets blood-forming stem cells in the bone marrow. Conditioning agents are used in gene therapy to remove diseased stem cells and allow healthy stem cells to form. This new agent, called CD117-ADC, does not appear to damage other organs during the conditioning process. It is less toxic than the conventional agent now used for gene therapy in humans, called busulfan, which may cause ovarian failure in women and may stop sperm production in men, resulting in infertility.

SCIENTISTS UNVEIL DETAILED CELL MAPS OF THE HUMAN BRAIN AND THE NONHUMAN PRIMATE BRAIN
Incredibly detailed cell maps help pave the way for new generation of treatments.
October 12, 2023 – A group of international scientists have mapped the genetic, cellular, and structural makeup of the human brain and the nonhuman primate brain. This understanding of brain structure, achieved by funding through the National Institutes of Health’s Brain Research Through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies® Initiative, or The BRAIN Initiative®, allows for a deeper knowledge of the cellular basis of brain function and dysfunction, helping pave the way for a new generation of precision therapeutics for people with mental disorders and other disorders of the brain. The findings appear in a compendium of 24 papers across Science, Science Advances, and Science Translational Medicine.
“Mapping the brain’s cellular landscape is a critical step toward understanding how this vital organ works in health and disease,” said Joshua A. Gordon, M.D., Ph.D., director of the National Institute of Mental Health. “These new detailed cell atlases of the human brain and the nonhuman primate brain offer a foundation for designing new therapies that can target the specific brain cells and circuits involved in brain disorders.”

STUDY REVEALS HOW YOUNG CHILDREN’S IMMUNE SYSTEMS TAME SARS-COV-2
NIH-supported research finds key differences between children & adults with COVID-19.
October 13, 2023 – New research helps explain why young children have lower rates of severe COVID-19 than adults. A study of infants and young children found those who acquired SARS-CoV-2 had a strong, sustained antibody response to the virus and high levels of inflammatory proteins in the nose but not in the blood. This immune response contrasts with that typically seen in adults with SARS-CoV-2 infection. Co-funded by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of the National Institutes of Health, the research appears in the journal Cell.
