Memorial Healthcare System Participates in Groundbreaking Clinical Trial for Innovative Pleural Effusion Treatment
March 27, 2025 – Memorial Healthcare System is one of only four healthcare centers in the nation to have participated in a clinical trial for the Pleural Dynamics ACES™ System, a game-changing device that uses a patient’s normal breathing to provide continuous relief from pleural effusion—excess fluid buildup in the pleural space between the lungs and chest wall. This fully internal, patient-friendly system eliminates the need for external catheters, frequent drainage, and prolonged hospital stays.
The trial concluded March 25, and with FDA approval already secured, the device is expected to reach the general market soon after. With its participation, Memorial Healthcare System continues its commitment to pioneering innovative treatments that enhance patient care and transform lives.
“The ACES™ System represents a significant leap forward in pleural effusion management,” said Dr. Mark Block, Chief, Division of Thoracic Surgery Program, at Memorial Healthcare System. “This fully internal, patient-friendly device is designed to offer relief without the complications of traditional treatments, and we’re excited to be part of the study advancing this technology.”
Pleural effusion affects 1.5 million Americans annually, often linked to conditions such as cancer, heart failure, pneumonia, and kidney or liver disease.

New da Vinci 5 Surgical System is a Game Changer for Patient’s Surgery at Broward Health Coral Springs
March 28, 2025 – When 71-year-old Boynton Beach resident Audrey Berkowitz was told she needed a total hysterectomy, she was prepared for a long and painful journey. She recalled how past generations of female family members and friends faced long and difficult recoveries from that surgery. Thanks to groundbreaking robotic-assisted surgical technology at Broward Health Coral Springs, her experience was seamless.
“I couldn’t be more pleased with my medical care,” Audrey said. “I expected to be in significant pain, but I was up and moving the same day and discharged with minimal discomfort. It’s truly not like the hysterectomies of past generations.”
Audrey was the first patient at Broward Health Coral Springs to undergo surgery using the hospital’s newly acquired da Vinci 5 Surgical System, a state-of-the-art robotic-assisted technology designed to enhance precision and improve patient outcomes. Her total hysterectomy, performed by Zoyla Almeida, M.D., an obstetrician-gynecologist with 3,000 robotic-assisted surgeries to her credit, was completed with extraordinary efficiency, allowing for a shorter recovery time and significantly less post-operative pain than traditional surgical methods.

My Cancer Treatment Checklist of Questions
The early part of a cancer journey will be filled with questions. Keep a running list of them and bring it to every appointment.
MIAMI, FLORIDA (March 28, 2025) – As a cancer patient, it can be challenging to ask questions of your health care providers. Even though I am a trained journalist who practically asks questions for a living, I struggled with all the questions I had during the early parts of my cancer journey.
It’s easy to be intimidated by the experts who are your professional caregivers or to worry that you’re taking up too much of their valuable time. Then there’s the desire to appear well-informed and well-educated about your health.
“Sometimes, people think they kind of get it or don’t get it at all and are embarrassed to ask questions,” says Andrea Marie Cook, M.S., B.S.N, RN, CSN, patient and family education and health literacy manager for Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, part of UHealth – the University of Miami Health System. She explains that asking and understanding the answers to questions about your health is a key aspect of health literacy, which is the ability to access, understand, and use health information. “People with lower health literacy have a higher rate of death, even when controlling for age and income,” she says.

Mayo Clinic Laboratories and Amprion announce collaboration to advance neurodegenerative disease diagnostics
ROCHESTER, Minn. and SAN DIEGO, March 26, 2025 – Mayo Clinic Laboratories and Amprion, a global leader advancing diagnosis of neurodegenerative disorders through seed amplification testing, today announced a collaboration to expand access to Amprion’s SAAmplify–αSYN (CSF) test across the United States. The test (test ID ASYNC) is available today for clients of Mayo Clinic Laboratories through the collaboration that combines the expertise of both organizations to enhance patient care and improve diagnostic accuracy for neurodegenerative diseases.
Amprion's SAAmplify™–αSYN (CSF) test has gained attention as a reliable laboratory-based test that aids in the diagnosis of synucleinopathies, including Parkinson's disease (PD), Lewy body dementia (LBD), multiple system atrophy (MSA), and Alzheimer’s disease + DLB. This test can identify the presence of alpha-synuclein pathology several years before overt clinical features of PD, LBD, or MSA appear, providing a critical tool for early diagnosis and differentiation from other conditions such as Alzheimer's disease (AD), frontotemporal dementia (FTD), and progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP). The assay is also the only seed amplification assay commercially available to detect synucleinopathies in CSF.

DOH-Miami-Dade Issues Rabies Alert
March 27, 2025 – The Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade County (DOH-Miami-Dade) is issuing a rabies alert in Miami-Dade County in response to a confirmed case of rabies in a horse tested on March 26, 2025, in unincorporated Miami-Dade County off State Road 997 (Krome Ave). DOH-Miami-Dade is monitoring rabies among wild animals in the area. All residents and visitors should be aware that rabies is currently present in the wild animal population.

If you are exposed to rabies, receiving appropriate treatment after exposure will protect you from the risk of rabies.
This rabies alert is for 60 days and includes the following boundaries in Miami-Dade County:
Northern boundary: SW 128th St.
Southern boundary: SW 161st St. Eastern boundary: SW 177th Ave. (Krome Ave.) Western boundary: SW 197th Ave.

NNU statement on HHS layoffs
The nation’s largest union of registered nurses provided the following statement in response to today’s announcement of mass layoffs in the Health and Human Services department.
March 27, 2025- “Registered nurses continue to be shocked and disturbed by the current administration’s starving of critical public health care resources.
“Our nation’s public health depends on the dedicated civil servants who ensure the smooth delivery of health care to our nation’s elderly, young, and poor through Medicaid, prevent the spread of infectious diseases through the CDC, and develop health promotion and disease and injury prevention programs across all federal agencies. The knowledge, expertise, and resources they provide enable state and local governments to support the health of our communities. The 225,000 nurses in our union and the millions of nurses across the country depend on these federal agencies to keep us safe and to keep our patients safe.
“These staffing cuts, in concert with recent funding and grant cuts – like the CDC’s withdrawal of $11.4 billion in infectious disease response – should be alarming to anyone who is invested in improving our country’s health care outcomes. It is clear to union nurses that the goal of this administration and Congressional Republicans is not to improve health, but to slash services and ultimately privatize the goods and services that are meant to serve all of us, so that their billionaire donors can boost their profits. The nation’s largest union of registered nurses will be mobilizing to protect our patients and fight back against these cruel and short-sighted cuts

HHS Announces Transformation to Make America Healthy Again
March 27, 2025 — Today, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced a dramatic restructuring in accordance with President Trump’s Executive Order, “Implementing the President’s ‘Department of Government Efficiency’ Workforce Optimization Initiative.”
The restructuring will address this and serve multiple goals without impacting critical services. First, it will save taxpayers $1.8 billion per year through a reduction in workforce of about 10,000 full-time employees who are part of this most recent transformation. When combined with HHS’ other efforts, including early retirement and Fork in the Road, the restructuring results in a total downsizing from 82,000 to 62,000 full-time employees.
Secondly, it will streamline the functions of the Department. Currently, the 28 divisions of the HHS contain many redundant units. The restructuring plan will consolidate them into 15 new divisions, including a new Administration for a Healthy America, or AHA, and will centralize core functions such as Human Resources, Information Technology, Procurement, External Affairs, and Policy. Regional offices will be reduced from 10 to 5.
