NOVEL STEREOTACTIC RADIOSURGERY TECHNOLOGY ZAPS BRAIN TUMORS AT BAPTIST HEALTH
New novel Stereotactic Radiosurgery Technology
June 25, 2024 – Using a novel stereotactic radiosurgery technology, experts at Miami Neuroscience Institute and Miami Cancer Institute, both part of Baptist Health, now have another option to treat patients with a variety of brain tumors and disorders painlessly and without cutting through the skull. The therapy is only available at a handful of locations worldwide.
From its appearance, the gyroscopic linear accelerator could almost be mistaken for a futuristic space capsule or a napping pod, but it delivers highly precise radiation with hundreds of angled radiation beams directed at the target in the brain, sparing nearby vital tissues. Its innovative, self-shielding design requires no expensive, heavily shielded vaults that house other types of radiation equipment, and the healthcare team can be at the patient’s bedside safely.
“Because we have every stereotactic radiosurgery modality in one location, we can individually match the patient to the technology that is best suited for them,” said neurosurgeon Michael McDermott, M.D., chief medical executive of Miami Neuroscience Institute. “It’s giving patients better access to the care they need.” Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) is a non-invasive established treatment for many brain tumors.

| SASHA BARKOV HELPS WIN THE STANLEY CUP WHILE BENEFITING SERIOUSLY-ILL KIDS WITH EACH GOAL AND ASSIST
June 25, 2024 — While Florida Panthers Captain Aleksander “Sasha” Barkov was leading his team to a Stanley Cup championship, he was also making a difference off the ice with his #BarkovScores4JoeD philanthropic campaign for Joe DiMaggioChildren’s Hospital Foundation.
Barkov donates $1,600 for each goal he scores and $800 for each he assists on during the regular season and playoffs. He also provides a suite at each Panthers home game for use by those connected to the hospital.
Through five seasons (two of them impacted by COVID-19) of #BarkovScores4JoeD, the captain has committed $420,000 to support kids, families, and programs at the pediatric facility in Hollywood. The NHL star’s dollars have aided the recent expansion of the children’s hospital, including its new child life zone, where he regularly interacts with patients, playing games, taking photos, and signing autographs.

BALANCING ACT: NOVEL WEARABLE SENSORS AND AI TRANSFORM BALANCE ASSESSMENT
FAU Engineering Researchers’ Approach Addresses Crucial Gap in Balance Assessments in Health Care
BOCA RATON, Fla. June 26, 2024 – Balance can be impacted by various factors, including diseases such as Parkinson’s disease, acute and chronic injuries to the nervous system, and the natural aging process. Accurately assessing balance in patients is important to identify and manage conditions that affect coordination and stability. Balance assessments also play a key role in preventing falls, understanding movement disorders, and designing appropriate therapeutic interventions across age groups and medical conditions.
However, traditional methods used to assess balance often suffer from subjectivity, are not comprehensive enough and cannot be administered remotely. Moreover, these assessments rely on expensive, specialized equipment which may not be readily accessible in all clinical settings and depend on the clinician’s expertise, which can lead to variability in results. More objective and comprehensive assessment tools in balance evaluation are greatly needed.
Using wearable sensors and advanced machine learning algorithms, researchers from Florida Atlantic University’s College of Engineering and Computer Science have developed a novel approach that addresses a crucial gap in balance assessment and sets a new benchmark in the application of wearable technology and machine learning in health care. The approach is a significant advance in objective balance assessment, especially for remote monitoring in home-based or nursing care settings, potentially transforming balance disorder management.

SALUSCARE WORKS WITH COMMUNITY PARTNERS TO LINK PATIENTS TO DETOXIFICATION AND TREATMENT
The effort is part of the Coordinated Opioid Recovery (CORE) Network in Florida
FORT MYERS, Fla. June 24, 2024 – SalusCare is coordinating with community partners including Lee County EMS and Family Health Centers to link overdose patients to treatment, including detoxification and Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT). The program, funded by grants from the state’s Opioid Settlement Agreement, is administered by the Central Florida Behavioral Health Network in partnership with the state’s Department of Health, Department of Children and Families and the Agency for Health Care Administration.
“We are utilizing this program to create a pathway for individuals with substance use disorder to lifesaving information and treatment,” said Jessica Plazewski, vice president and COO of SalusCare, which has 24/7 detoxification services and is a free distribution site for Narcan, an emergency nasal spray used by others to reverse the effects of an opioid overdose. “We are working with Lee County EMS to link patients to substance use disorder treatment where appropriate instead of taking them to the emergency room. The goal is to help patients receive treatment and tools necessary to help break the cycle of addiction.”
The statewide CORE program was the first of its kind in the nation and started in 2022 in 12 counties with an announcement from Gov. Ron DeSantis. Lee County was added to the program in 2024 along with 16 other counties. According to state data, EMS in Lee responded to 4,453 overdose calls in 2022.

HOME-GROWN HEALTH CARE FROM HEALTHCARE NETWORK
By Dr. Jaime Khemraj, chief medical officer
June 25, 2024 – According to the Florida Hospital Association, Florida is expected to be short nearly 60,000 nurses by 2035. A Florida Medical Association study shows a need for 18,000 physicians across the state by 2035, one-third for primary care physicians and the rest for specialists.
While a national shortage of health care providers began before COVID-19, that shortage became worse after the pandemic, causing many to rethink the stress and pressure of the profession. In addition, labor costs are growing, with providers having to take measures like salary adjustments and incentives to attract and retain staff.
It has resulted in the perfect storm in Southwest Florida, with a lack of affordable housing, high cost of living and the need for more health care workers to care for a growing aging population, often with complex medical needs.
Healthcare Network began working with farmworkers in Immokalee in 1977 and continues to provide care to underserved and remote communities in Collier County. For years, the nonprofit has recognized the need to train physicians locally, with the hope that they will embrace the mission of closing the gap in care by staying after their training is complete.

NAACOS OUTLINES THOUGHTS ON MEDICARE PHYSICIAN PAYMENT REFORM
Highlights
Value-based care has grown tremendously over the last decade, but existing incentives are expiring. Congress has been working to identify how to improve physician payment while supporting and better incentivizing value-based care.
NAACOS has offered a number of recommendations, including around financial and non-financial incentives, along with reforms to the CMS Innovation Center.
By Aisha Pittman, MPH, Senior Vice President, Government Affairs, NAACOS, and Robert Daley, Director, Legislative Affairs, NAACOS
June 25, 2024 – In addition to generating billions of dollars in savings and improvements in quality, value-based care models have had a profound impact on the daily lives of patients and their families. Millions of patients in these models benefit from better coordinated care and services not covered by Medicare, including patient outreach and social supports like housing and transportation assistance.
Incentives to participate in Medicare’s advanced alternative payment models (APMs) have proven successful in transitioning clinicians to value-based care models. In the last decade, the number of clinicians qualifying for Medicare’s advanced APM incentive has increased by nearly 300 percent or quadrupled.

FOR HEALTHY ADULTS, TAKING MULTIVITAMINS DAILY IS NOT ASSOCIATED WITH A LOWER RISK OF DEATH
Findings come from an NIH analysis of more than two decades of dietary data from 390,124 U.S. adults.
JUNE 26, 2024 – A large analysis of data from nearly 400,000 healthy U.S. adults followed for more than 20 years has found no association between regular multivitamin use and lower risk of death. The study, led by researchers at the National Institutes of Health’s National Cancer Institute, was published June 26, 2024, in JAMA Network Open.
Many adults in the United States take multivitamins with the hope of improving their health. However, the benefits and harms of regular multivitamin use remain unclear. Previous studies of multivitamin use and mortality have yielded mixed results and been limited by short follow-up times.
To more deeply explore the relationship between long-term regular multivitamin use and overall mortality and death from cardiovascular disease and cancer, the researchers analyzed data from three large, geographically diverse prospective studies involving a total of 390,124 U.S. adults who were followed for more than 20 years. The participants included in this analysis were generally healthy, with no history of cancer or other chronic diseases.
