Maintaining Florida’s Economic Success Depends on Extending the ACA Enhanced Premium Support
By Mary C. Mayhew
Congress has a full plate of must-pass legislation before the end of the year. Chief among them is extending the successful enhanced premium support that makes purchasing individual health insurance coverage more affordable.
Without immediate Congressional action, federal funding to maintain this support expires at the end of the year. And, hundreds of thousands of Floridians, many of whom are powering the small business engine of Florida’s thriving economy, will lose health insurance coverage.
If Congress fails to extend the enhanced premium support, the number of uninsured Floridians is expected to increase by more than 40 percent. And, Florida’s small business success story will come to a close. Florida currently leads the nation in both the total number of marketplace enrollees and the number of small business owners with marketplace coverage. Nearly 800,000 small business owners in Florida and more than 500,000 self-employed Floridians have private health insurance coverage through the marketplace. That’s more than any other state.
Enhanced premium support, which comes in the form of tax credits, provides additional subsidies to people who are already eligible for the regular tax credits because of their incomes.

ACHE of South Florida Member Spotlight – October 2025: Neil Mayo
Neil Mayo remembers the day he made the decision to go into healthcare as a career. As he explained, “When I graduated college with my bachelor’s degree I was discussing with my advisor if I wanted to get my masters. We talked healthcare, and I knew healthcare was never going to go away. At the time, pharmaceutical sales was in its heyday, but something inside of me said, ‘I don’t want to do that, but I want to be in healthcare.'”
Mayo earned both his undergraduate and his masters in healthcare administration from the University of New Haven in Connecticut, then came back to Florida to start his career. He initially worked in IT staffing and recruiting until he got his first opportunity in healthcare, and then he said, “I knew my calling was dealing with seniors.” Mayo has been in the private duty sector for 15 years, and when it was time for a change he pointed out, “Senior Nannies had immense upside so that’s why I chose them.”
Senior Nannies Care Service has been in business for more than 30 years, and according to Mayo, “We do a lot of things that revolve around seniors – sending caregivers into the home for seniors who need extra help, or sending nurses into homes for those who may need more skilled care. Placing seniors into assisted living, independent living – it’s all based around caregivers helping people.”

UPDATED NEWS INFORMATION FROM THE LAST THREE DAYS IN SOUTH FLORIDA |
Nicklaus Children’s and Mystic Force Foundation Celebrate Patient Legacy Through Annual Gold Ribbon Parade
September 29, 2025 – One in five children loses their fight against childhood cancer every day in the United States. Children in South Florida are no exception. The South Florida community rallied this weekend to renew its commitment to lead the way in treating and helping find a cure for childhood cancer. Nicklaus Children’s and Mystic Force Foundation in collaboration with the North Miami Police Department wrapped-up Childhood Cancer Awareness Month by honoring Nicklaus Children’s patient, Salvatore, lovingly known as Sal, who tragically lost his battle 14 years ago.
At the age of 4, Sal was diagnosed with stage IV neuroblastoma cancer. Sal’s parents learned quickly the many challenges that come with having a child with cancer, but also the reality of how little funding is allocated to childhood cancer treatment and research. Knowing the prognosis for Sal was not one they were prepared for, his parents were certain that his legacy would be the beacon of hope for families in South Florida and around the world in this fight against all childhood cancers.

Phase III trial presented at ASTRO in San Francisco finds five-treatment regimen poised to become new standard of care.
September 29, 2025 — Men with intermediate-risk prostate cancer can receive a complete course of radiation in just five treatments — rather than the typical 20 to 28 — while maintaining excellent cancer control and improving quality of life, according to results of an international phase III trial conducted by Dr. Rodney J. Ellis.
The principal investigator of the trial, Ellis is a radiation oncologist and physician-scientist at the Tampa General Cancer Institute, Tampa General Hospital and serves as director of Clinical Research, Department of Radiation Oncology; and professor of Radiation Oncology, USF Health Morsani College of Medicine.

The NRG Oncology GU-005 trial is among the first large, international Phase III randomized trials directly comparing stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) with a longer course of moderately hypofractionated IMRT for men with localized, intermediate-risk prostate cancer, with co-primary endpoints of disease-free survival and patient-reported outcomes.

New Autoinjector Device for Severe Bleeding Emergencies is a Faster, Simpler Solution Compared With IV Treatment
JERUSALEM, September 29, 2025 — Lifesaving treatment for severe bleeding emergencies can now be rapidly delivered via a new tranexamic acid (TXA) autoinjector device developed by a team including the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (HU).
Severe bleeding is the leading cause of preventable death in trauma situations, from combat zones to highway accidents. TXA—an antifibrinolytic drug known to significantly improve survival in severe bleeding by helping to stabilize blood clots and reduce blood loss—is already widely used in hospitals, trauma centers, and by pre-hospital emergency responders. Research has shown that for every 15-minute delay in administering TXA, its effectiveness drops by 10%, underscoring the need for a faster, simpler solution. However, the standard IV method of administration can be difficult to perform in chaotic, high-stress environments, leading to dangerous delays in treatment.
According to the research published in Injury, the new autoinjector is as effective as traditional intravenous methods, but only takes five minutes and doesn’t require medical expertise. This breakthrough could transform trauma care in emergencies, making rapid, easy-to-administer treatment available in hospitals, roadside accidents, or in military situations when every second counts.
The group of researchers was led by Prof. Arik Eisenkraft and Prof. David Gertz of the HU Faculty of Medicine. The simplicity and portability of the autoinjector device allows it to be used widely by paramedics, first responders, and military medics, ensuring that TXA can be administered within the critical early minutes following severe injury.
