ROGER DUNCAN III, MD, RECEIVES FMA’S HIGHEST AWARD

August 12, 2023 - For his “unparalleled generosity and dedication to those less represented in medicine,” Palm Beach County anesthesiologist Roger Duncan III, MD, FASA, received the 2023 FMA Award of Distinguished Service on Sunday, July 30, in the House of Delegates. This award, which is the FMA’s highest honor, reflects Dr. Duncan’s exceptional service to the association, the medical profession and the public.

In 2012, under the auspices of the T. Leroy Jefferson Medical Society (TLJMS), Dr. Duncan founded and implemented the Healthcare and Science Stars of Tomorrow Career Symposium — a program that has given more than 10,000 students from surrounding areas a closer look at future careers in medicine, pharmacy, and biomedical engineering, among others. As he told Palm Beach Illustrated magazine in 2019, the symposium aims to broaden participants’ ideas about careers in science and healthcare and, ultimately, their own potential.

“These students from underrepresented or lower socioeconomic areas don’t dream big dreams because they don’t have the opportunities nor the role models in their day-to-day world,” Dr. Duncan told the magazine. “They have omni-potential but (need) people who believe in them.”

MEMORIAL HEALTHCARE SYSTEM’S COMPREHENSIVE APPROACH TO HIGH-RISK PREGNANCIES SAFEGUARDS MOTHERS AND BABIES IN COMPLEX PREGNANCIES

Offering the only Placenta Accreta Spectrum Program in Broward

August 10, 2023 – Memorial Healthcare System’s high risk pregnancy hospitalist team includes a specialized focus on obstetric care for placenta accreta spectrum patients at Memorial Regional Hospital. This program, which offers a 24/7 on-call team of experts, reinforces Memorial’s commitment to delivering the highest level of care to expecting mothers and their babies, particularly in cases where complications, such as placenta previa and placenta accreta, pose significant risks.

“Our teams have the processes and plans in place to safely deliver your child if you have Placenta Accreta. We have years of experience treating this condition and providing safe outcomes,” said Julie Kang, MD, medical director of High-Risk Obstetrics Surgery at Memorial Healthcare System. “We like to put our patients at ease because this really is an emotional battle when it comes to the surgery.”

Placenta accreta spectrum is a high-risk pregnancy condition that affects one in 272 births annually in the United States. It occurs when the placenta attaches itself and grows too deeply into the uterine wall, making separation difficult during delivery. This can lead to severe complications like heavy vaginal bleeding, premature delivery, and, in extreme cases, a hysterectomy or even loss of life.

MAYO CLINIC ‘MINI-BRAIN’ STUDY REVEALS POSSIBLE KEY LINK TO AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER

August 10, 2023 – Using human “mini-brain” models known as organoids, Mayo Clinic and Yale University scientists have discovered that the roots of autism spectrum disorder may be associated with an imbalance of specific neurons that play a critical role in how the brain communicates and functions. The specific cells are known as excitatory cortical neurons.

The new study is published in Nature Neuroscience.

FINDINGS
The team found an abnormal imbalance of excitatory neurons in the forebrain of people with the disorder, depending on their head size.

“This organoid technology allowed us to recreate the brain development alteration that happened in the patients when they were in the uterus, which is believed to be the time when autism spectrum disorder originates,” says Alexej Abyzov, Ph.D., a genomic researcher in the Department of Quantitative Health Sciences at the Mayo Clinic Center for Individualized Medicine. Dr. Abyzov is a senior author of the study.

WHAT IS AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER
Autism spectrum disorder is a neurological condition that affects the way people perceive and interact with others, leading to challenges in social communication and behavior. The term “spectrum” emphasizes the broad range of symptoms and severity, and includes autism, Asperger’s syndrome, childhood disintegrative disorder and an unspecified form of pervasive developmental disorder.

Nearly 1 in 36 children in the U.S. has been identified with autism spectrum disorder, according to estimates from the Centers for Disease Control’s Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring Network.

LEE HEALTH REMINDS THE COMMUNITY TO PRACTICE LIGHTNING SAFETY

August 11, 2023 — As the community turns to water-related activities to stay cool during this extremely hot summer, Lee Health would like to remind the public about lightning safety. As thunderstorms increase during this time, so does lightning and the chance for lightning-related incidences.

According to the National Lightning Safety Council, 34% of lightning-related fatalities are water-related, based on 293 cases from 2006 through 2022. Florida is also the lightning capital of the United States, averaging 223 lightning events per square mile last year.

As we enjoy pools, beaches and other water-related activities to stay cool with our friends and loved ones during these historically hot days, it’s important to remember how to stay lightning safe.
