ACHE OF SOUTH FLORIDA MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: MONICA PUGA, APRN, RN
MAY 2023
Monica Puga began her career more than 21 years ago as an RN at Memorial Healthcare System, but since that time has moved into the role of senior vice president & chief nurse executive. As she pointed out, “There are significant alignments between nursing and other healthcare disciplines; we are all a family of caregivers.”
Puga said that when she stepped into this position in October, she brought with her other areas of healthcare that already reported to her, namely population health and value-based care. She also mentioned a new service line called the care coordination center. She likened it to an air traffic control center for a healthcare system, saying that “it manages patient flow and patient throughput, so we are delivering the right care in the right setting at the right time, safely and efficiently.”
Puga started in 2001 as an interventional radiology nurse, and then moved into various leadership roles. “I was nurse manager of the cardiac cath lab and interventional radiology department at Memorial West. That’s where I received a lot of my training with respect to hospital-based nursing, as well as a strong leadership foundation.”

THE PHYSICIAN ADVOCATE
By Rafael J. Fernandez, Jr., MD
As the 2023 Florida Legislative streaks to a close it offers an opportunity to reflect on missed opportunities and hope for future efforts to advance the practice of medicine in our state. The real story of the session will be written over the coming months as we witness the implementation of new laws and the regulation and legal challenges that are likely to linger on. What is clear is the start of our efforts as physicians to advocate for meaningful reform starts in our community and it needs to start immediately.
As your Dade County Medical Association delegation recently spent a productive week in Tallahassee I was struck by the sheer volume of voices that are ever present in Tallahassee. Countless passionate advocates supported by their hired lobbyists fill the halls pressing Legislators to consider the value of their requests. I empathize with our elected officials as they weigh the numerous issues before them and the well-articulated perspectives all of their constituents bring to the forefront.
The most glaring observation however is that physician voices need to be heard now more than ever. As professionals we view our current practice climate with trepidation.

BAPTIST HEALTH AND FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY TO BEGIN EXCLUSIVE NEGOTIATIONS ON COMPREHENSIVE ALLIANCE
The organizations will work together to expand physician training, research and care
MIAMI – April 27, 2023 – Baptist Health and Florida International University, through its Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine, today announced they have entered into exclusive negotiations to develop a comprehensive alliance, which will drive clinical, research and education advancements for the benefit of the South Florida community. Together, Baptist Health – South Florida’s largest not-for-profit healthcare system – and FIU – South Florida’s public research university – will work to enhance access to specialized care, novel therapies and physician training.
The two organizations intend to join forces to expand undergraduate and graduate medical education programs, develop clinical and teaching facilities, grow faculty-physician practices, and deepen capabilities around pioneering research.
“FIU and Baptist share a common mission to educate and provide high quality, evidence-based and cost-effective care that leads to excellent patient outcomes,” said FIU President Kenneth A. These include highly ranked programs and brilliant researchers in the basic sciences and in our Nicole Wertheim College of Nursing and Health Sciences and the Robert Stempel College of Public Health and Social Work. “This relationship with FIU, a fast-rising leader in medical education and research, promises to transform the future of medicine in South Florida,” said Bo Boulenger, president and CEO of Baptist Health. “We look forward to working with our partners at the FIU Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine to train the next generation of physicians, recruit world-class experts, engage in cutting-edge research and improve care for our community, together.”

Motorman for Miami-Dade Police Department Reunites with His Care Team at Ryder Trauma Center One Year After Devastating Accident
April 26 ,2023 – The Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital is hosted a press conference on Wednesday, April 26, from 10:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. to celebrate the recovery of Matthew Larsh, a motorman for Miami-Dade Police Department, who suffered extensive injuries to his upper and lower extremities as a result of a motorcycle accident last year. Larsh reunited with his Ryder Trauma care team, the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue unit who saved him at the crash site, and his home district on the one-year anniversary since his accident.
On April 21, 2022, Larsh was driving his motorcycle at the intersection of Northwest 36th Street and Northwest 53rd Avenue when he collided head-on with an SUV. At impact, he was flung 20 feet into the air. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Station 59 rushed Larsh to Ryder Trauma, where he was diagnosed with a torn aorta, multiple severe pelvic fractures, an open dislocated elbow, an open knee with a tibia fracture, and multiple foot fractures.
His trauma team, led by Antonio C. Marttos, Jr., MD, a UHealth – University of Miami Health System trauma surgeon at Ryder Trauma, evaluated the need for emergency surgeries; identified possible sources of internal bleeding; and placed Larsh on a ventilator to support his breathing. Multiple surgeons worked together to stabilize him while treating his multiple fractures, including a contained ruptured aorta and a fractured pelvis, while treating sources of internal bleeding.

HCA FLORIDA ST. PETERSBURG HOSPITAL OPENS NEW PELVIC FLOOR PHYSICAL THERAPY CLINIC
March 23, 2023— HCA Florida St. Petersburg Hospital recently announced the opening of its new pelvic floor physical therapy clinic. The new clinic provides specialized treatment to educate patients and target their pelvic floor muscles.
“Pelvic floor conditions, like incontinence and organ prolapse, can sometimes be seen as taboo subjects, but they are so much more common than many women realize,” said Sally Seymour, CEO of HCA Florida St. Petersburg Hospital. “With the launch of our new clinic, we are aiming to help reduce the stigma around common challenges that most women experience at some point in their lifetime, and we are excited to be able to offer this much needed resource for patients in our community.”
The pelvic floor muscles support the bladder, reproductive organs and the rectum. Pelvic floor therapy helps treat a variety of symptoms, such as frequent urination, accidental leakage of urine when sneezing our laughing, pain or pressure in the pelvic region, constipation, sexual dysfunction or organ prolapse.
“We want women to understand that just because they’ve had a baby, undergone surgery or are getting older, they shouldn’t have to put up with any of these debilitating symptoms,” said Marcey Wright, MPT, supervisor of the hospital’s physical therapy department. “We are looking forward to helping more women improve their lives in more ways through this new program.”

CYBERATTACKS: NOT IF, BUT WHEN
The cyber breach that occurred at Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare System (TMH) in January 2023 highlights the importance of cyber insurance for organizations of all sizes. The TMH cyber breach compromised the protected personal and medical information of 20,376 patients, including their social security numbers, dates of birth, treatment information, health insurance information and more.
The breach is one of the largest cyberattacks in Florida healthcare industry history, and the potential financial impact on TMH could be significant. The healthcare system could face legal and regulatory penalties, as well as the costs associated with notifying affected patients and providing them with identity theft protection services.
“Cyberattacks like this occur almost every day – it’s not if it will happen, but when,” said Julie Danna, Senior Vice President, National Health Care Practice, Danna-Gracey, a Division of Risk Strategies. “A trusted staff member might open a spreadsheet that they think was sent from their employer, but it is a breach designed to put the computer system on lockdown until the company pays a ransom. If the company doesn’t have cyber insurance, they might have to come up with hundreds of thousands of dollars to pay the ransom, get their system running again, and reach out to every patient who was affected by the breach.
“There may also be fees and fines to be paid, as well as the cost of a public relations campaign to help restore the company’s reputation,” she added.

HCA FLORIDA BRANDON HOSPITAL WELCOMES VOLUNTEERS DURING NATIONAL VOLUNTEER MONTH
April 27, 2023 – HCA Florida Brandon Hospital is full of friendly faces during April, National Volunteer Month. The hospital relaunched its volunteer program after a brief hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Volunteers are crucial to Brandon Hospital as they provide additional support to our professional staff by contributing to the comfort, care and happiness of patients.
With the relaunch of our volunteer program, Brandon Hospital welcomed back Jackie, a local retired law enforcement captain. Jackie has contributed over eight years of volunteer services to the hospital. Jackie volunteers at the front desk entrance of both entrance towers greeting visitors and employees as they arrive to work, issuing visitor passes and escorting visitors to various areas in the hospital. “I wanted to continue my service to the community after retirement. There is no better way than volunteering at HCA Florida Brandon Hospital with this group of professional staff,” explains Jackie. “Spending time at the hospital is so rewarding no matter who or how I help here.”
Since relaunching the volunteer services program in the fall, there are over 60 people who volunteer alongside Jackie, including members of our pastoral care team. Brandon Hospital hopes to expand its volunteer services with the help of volunteer manager Angela Anderson, who has taken the lead in reestablishing volunteer efforts. “I am proud of the volunteer team and I hope we can continue to grow our volunteer program as time goes on with the individuals who look to serve their community.”

HCW BIOLOGICS SECURES $26.25 MILLION NON-DILUTIVE FINANCING WITH ASSET-BACKED DEVELOPMENT LOAN
Provides funding for buildout of new headquarters and manufacturing facility
Capital requirements now funded into 2025
MIRAMAR, Fla., April 27, 2023 — HCW Biologics Inc. (the “Company” or “HCW Biologics”) (NASDAQ: HCWB), a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company focused on discovering and developing novel immunotherapies to lengthen healthspan by disrupting the link between inflammation and age-related diseases, entered into a $26.25 million development line of credit agreement on April 21, 2023. This five-year, non-amortizing loan, collateralized with real estate assets, provides project financing for the buildout of the Company’s new headquarters and manufacturing facility. Funds formerly earmarked for this purpose will be redeployed for clinical development, including multiple Phase 2 clinical trials in cancer indications to continue to evaluate HCW9218, the Company’s injectable, bifunctional fusion protein molecule for reduction of senescence; and a Phase 1b clinical study in an autoimmune disease to evaluate HCW9302, the Company’s injectable, IL-2-based fusion compound.

BEING HOSPITALIZED WITH ACUTE KIDNEY INJURY MAY INCREASE RISK FOR REHOSPITALIZATION AND DEATH
April 27, 2023 – A study supported by the National Institutes of Health found that people who experienced acute kidney injury (AKI) during a hospitalization, including those admitted with AKI or who developed AKI in the hospital, were more likely to revisit the hospital or die shortly after discharge, compared to people hospitalized without AKI. AKI is a sudden loss of kidney function that usually lasts for a short time. The research, funded by NIH’s National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), was published in the American Journal of Kidney Diseases(link is external).
According to the findings, people who had been hospitalized with AKI, whether or not they had pre-existing kidney disease, were 62% more likely to be readmitted to the hospital for any reason and 266% more likely to die of any cause within 90 days after discharge from the hospital. During the year following discharge, those hospitalized with AKI were re-hospitalized nearly 60% more often than those hospitalized without AKI and more than twice as likely to die. Heart failure, sepsis, and pneumonia were among the most common causes for readmission after discharge with an AKI hospitalization.
