ACHE of South Florida Member Spotlight: Drew Tyrer
By Lois Thomson
Drew Tyrer’s father was a hospital administrator and his mother was a physical therapist. It’s only natural, then, that he would end up with a career in healthcare, right? Well, yes, but not right away.
Tyrer, chief executive officer at HCA Florida Westside Hospital, admits, “I grew up in a hospital. My dad was passionate about supporting the hospital in our community where I grew up in Frankfort, Kentucky, which was an HCA hospital. “He said throughout his life he realized that he’s very comfortable being in that atmosphere. “I enjoy it, I thrive on the energy and expertise that all of our providers and staff bring to the table.”
That’s why he began his career as a … college golf coach. “I played golf in college and thought I wanted to be coach and eventually an athletic director,” he said. “I loved it, l still love those four years of my life.”
However, practicality set in, and Tyrer said he began to realize that as a father with a young family, traveling 50 nights a year as a coach “was not as attractive as it once was.” In addition, he said he wanted to be challenged. “I was missing something that had meaning and purpose.”

| KIDZ Medical Services at Forefront of Advances in Pediatric Oncology
By Vanessa Orr
As more children continue to receive devastating cancer diagnoses, it’s more important than ever that treatments continue to advance in order to find cures. Fortunately, the hematology/oncology specialists at KIDZ Medical Services are at the forefront of this effort in South Florida, resulting in more positive outcomes for the pediatric patients they serve.
“Pediatric oncology has very much improved in the last two decades because of advances in diagnostic technique and analysis, which has helped us learn more about tumors and how they behave, and what therapy we can provide in order to affect a cure,” explained Dr. Ossama Maher, a KIDZ Medical Services board-certified pediatric hematologist oncologist practicing at the Helen & Jacob Shaham Cancer & Blood Disorders Institute at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital. Dr. Maher serves as the medical director of the blood and marrow transplant program, and associate clinical director of the neuro-oncology program.
“Every child seen by our practice that is diagnosed with a solid tumor or even liquid malignancies, such as leukemia, are sent for advanced molecular testing on this tumor in order to allow us to learn more about it,” he said. “This way, we can combine chemotherapy with precise medicine or targeted therapy, which can synergistically help to increase the tumor’s cure rate.”

Baptist Health Orthopedic Care Now Offering Minimally Invasive Treatment for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Boca Raton, FL – October 1 2024 – Michael Cohn, M.D., an orthopedic hand surgeon with Baptist Health Orthopedic Care, is now offering the most advanced, minimally invasive surgery to treat carpal tunnel syndrome that uses live ultrasound visualization and a sophisticated single-use device. Dr. Cohn is the first hand surgeon in Boca Raton performing this innovative procedure.
The procedure known as “carpal tunnel release” is done in minutes using only local anesthesia and does not require stitches. The procedure has been shown to decrease patients’ pain and reduce their recovery time significantly, compared with the standard open and endoscopic carpal tunnel release.
“Unlike traditional surgery for carpal tunnel syndrome, this minimally invasive approach involves a very small incision and less disruption to the surrounding tissue allowing patients to return to their daily activities much sooner”, said Dr. Cohn. “With the latest tools and technology at our hospital, we are proud to offer this innovative procedure to our community and improve outcomes and recovery experiences.”

Delray Medical Center Completes 150th FARAPULSE™ Pulsed Field Ablation System for Atrial Fibrillation
October 1, 2024 – Delray Medical Center completes its 150th FARAPULSE™ Pulsed Filed Ablation system, a device approved earlier this year to teat atrial fibrillation, the most common type of heart arrhythmia. The milestone procedure was completed by Dr. Yoel Vivas, who also completed the first case in April this year. Delray Medical Center was the first hospital in Palm Beach County to utilize this new technology.
“In less than six months, we have already been able to help 150 patients with this innovative technology, which is incredibly rewarding,” said the hospital’s CEO Heather Havericak. “This is a tribute to our incredible team who are all focused on quality patient outcomes. This mark underscores Delray Medical Center’s commitment to investing in medical technology.”
The FARAPULSE PFA System, which is manufactured by Boston Scientific, received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in January.[i] The new system offers an alternative treatment for atrial fibrillation than traditional thermal ablation, in which a catheter placed in the interior of the heart generates extreme temperatures – hot or cold – to destroy targeted areas in the heart associated with abnormal heart rhythms. Instead, the FARAPULSE PFA System relies on tissue-selective, non-thermal electric fields to ablate heart tissue and avoid damage to surrounding structures.

The widening war on breast cancer shows promise for women
Sylvester experts attack breast cancer on multiple fronts to advance cures, reduce racial disparities and save lives. New imaging and surgical techniques help.
Sept. 30, 2024 – About 42,000 women in the United States die each year of breast cancer and experts at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, part of University of Miami Health System, strive to reduce those numbers. Their arsenal consists of sophisticated imaging technology, improved surgical procedures, a program for high-risk women and research into the cellular mechanisms of cancer. Breast cancer affects one in eight U.S. women. Sylvester has breast cancer survivors available for interviews as well as these experts who offer ideas for news stories …
Susan Kesmodel, M.D., is director of breast surgical oncology at Sylvester and co-leader of the Breast Site Disease Group. She sees opportunities for better use of surgery.
“We are seeing a de-escalation of surgery for breast cancer. In many women with early-stage breast cancer, mastectomy is not necessary and long-term survival is equivalent with lumpectomy. In some cases where we have multifocal or multicentric breast cancers we can do two lumpectomies with radiation and patients do not necessarily need a mastectomy,” Kesmodel said.

Sylvester study: MRI provides early warning system for glioblastoma growth
The research suggests this technology could one day guide rapid treatment adaptation during radiation therapy
OCTOBER 1, 2024 – A new study shows the potential power of imaging paired with radiation to shape treatment for glioblastoma patients in real time.
The study, led by researchers at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, part of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, is the first to quantify tumor changes in glioblastoma patients receiving MRI-guided radiation therapy. This novel technique, also known as MRI-linear accelerator or MRI-linac, pairs daily imaging with radiation. Sylvester was the first to use this technology for patients with glioblastoma and remains one of the few cancer centers to offer it for the disease.
The Sylvester researchers found that this daily imaging can serve as an important monitoring system to signal tumor growth during treatment earlier than standard imaging, providing evidence that the method could one day be used to guide rapid treatment adaptation during radiation therapy.
The study was published Sept. 30 in the International Journal of Radiation Oncology – Biology – Physics and simultaneously presented at the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) meeting by the study’s first author, Kaylie Cullison, Ph.D., an M.D./Ph.D. student in the Miller School’s Medical Scientist Training Program.
“Our study shows that these daily scans can serve as an early warning sign for potential tumor growth,” Cullison said.
In the study, which was led by Eric A. Mellon, M.D., Ph.D., a radiation oncologist and co-leader of Sylvester’s Neurologic Cancer Site Disease Group, the researchers followed 36 glioblastoma patients over a six-week course of daily radiation and MRI scans using MRI-linac. They then compared the data from these daily scans to standard-of-care imaging to measure tumor size, namely, a single MRI image with contrast performed one week before radiation treatment and another a month after the radiation course is completed. Although MRI-linac could be paired with a contrast agent, some patients are concerned about frequent use of these heavy metals, so the study was conducted without contrast for the daily scans.

Highlights from the Meeting of the Strategic Advisory Group of Experts (SAGE) on Immunization
The Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization (SAGE) held their regular biannual meeting from 23 to 26 September, to discuss, among others, recommendations on strategies and the use of a range of vaccines to prevent infectious diseases including RSV, cholera, polio and universal rubella vaccine.
Key highlights:
Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) vaccine: SAGE recommends the introduction of passive immunization (maternal vaccination and monoclonal antibody administration in infants) for the prevention of severe RSV disease in young infants in all countries. For countries that decide to use the maternal vaccine to prevent severe RSV disease in infants, SAGE recommends a single dose of vaccine in the third trimester of pregnancy.
Universal rubella vaccine: SAGE discussed the current WHO recommendation requiring 80% coverage threshold with measles-containing vaccines as a requirement for the introduction of rubella containing vaccine (RCV), and recommended that this threshold be lifted.
Poliomyelitis: SAGE expressed support for the planning for the eventual global cessation of bivalent oral poliovirus vaccines (bOPV) use and endorsed the evolving policy framework, triggers and principles of risk tiering of countries for bOPV cessation, noting that further work on the plan is ongoing.
Mpox: SAGE received an update on the current status of the ongoing mpox public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC) and the progress in implementing their recommendations from the WHO mpox vaccine position paper published in August 2024.
Immunization coverage: Global coverage of the human papillomavirus (HPV) has increased substantially in 2023 and malaria vaccines are now in use in 13 African countries, with additional countries to introduce in 2024 and 2025.
Immunization Agenda 2030: While trends in vaccination coverage and zero-dose children have remained flat or seen a reversal in several WHO regions, there are exemplary countries that are sustaining high coverage. High political will and strong accountability processes at the subnational levels appear to be common attributes in such countries.
