BROWARD HEALTH PATIENT TESTIMONIAL: HIP, HIP, HOORAY!
August 23 ,2023 – After two hip replacement surgeries at Broward Health North, Stephen Schwartz is ready to celebrate being free from pain.
Before his first surgery on his left hip, Schwartz could barely walk. He says getting in and out of bed was excruciating. After months of living in pain, he went to see Adam J. Lipman, M.D., an orthopaedic surgeon and sports medicine doctor.
After Dr. Lipman performed a physical examination, X-rays and other tests, he diagnosed Schwartz with osteoarthritis of the hip. Based on Schwartz’s disease state and pain level, Dr. Lipman recommended a total hip replacement.
“Stephen was a good candidate for an anterior total hip replacement, a procedure in which we use minimally invasive techniques and a muscle-sparing approach to perform the surgery accurately and with rapid recovery,” Dr. Lipman said. “With this technique, we use live, x-ray imaging to precisely prepare the hip socket and position the implant.”

PREVENTING MEASLES OUTBREAKS IN THE US THROUGH VACCINATION
August 25, 2023 – The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) lists India as the top country for measles outbreaks, with more than 57,500 reported cases. In the U.S., there have been 19 cases of the highly infectious virus this year.
“Measles is a viral infection that is highly contagious if you’re not immune to it,” says Dr. Nipunie Rajapakse, a pediatric infectious diseases physician with the Mayo Clinic Children’s Center. “It’s generally characterized by fever, cough, runny nose and a pretty characteristic rash that can involve much of the skin surface.”
Measles was declared eliminated in the U.S. in 2000 through a successful vaccine program, yet it persists globally. People can bring it to the U.S. if they’re not vaccinated and get infected when they travel. The CDC says travelers should seek medical care if they develop symptoms of measles, including a rash, high fever, cough, runny nose or red, watery eyes.
