Despite Urgent Warnings, Child Drownings Continue to Rise Across Florida
South Florida Leaders Renew Call to Action as State Remains on Pace for Deadliest Year on Record
July 23, 2026 Despite repeated warnings from healthcare providers, first responders, elected officials and community organizations, children continue to lose their lives in preventable drownings across Florida at an alarming rate.
Just three weeks after community leaders gathered to sound the alarm ahead of the Fourth of July holiday, another series of tragic drownings has underscored a sobering reality: the message is still not reaching enough families.
“The heartbreaking reality is that we are standing here again because children are still dying,” said Malvina Duncan, Injury Prevention Coordinator at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital and SAFE KIDS Miami-Dade Coordinator.
Florida has now recorded 74 child drownings in 2026, including 15 across Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties. The state remains on pace to surpass 2025, the deadliest year for child drownings in Florida history.
On Wednesday, Nicklaus Children’s Health System, Broward Health, YMCA of South Florida, Children’s Services Council of Broward County, Florida Panthers, Water SMART Broward, Florida Department of Health, Florida Atlantic University CARD and community leaders gathered in Fort Lauderdale to deliver an urgent message.

The transformational gift is the first major philanthropic investment in TGH Brooksville since the hospital joined Tampa General’s academic health system in 2023.
July 24, 2026 – The Tampa General Hospital (TGH) Foundation has received a transformational $5 million gift from philanthropists Frank and Carol Morsani to enhance emergency services at TGH Brooksville.
It is the first major gift supporting the region since TGH Brooksville, TGH Spring Hill and TGH Crystal River joined Tampa General’s not-for-profit academic health system in the Community and Specialty Hospital division.

JULY 22, 2026 – When Veneita Dempster began experiencing weeks of shortness of breath and a persistent cough, her family knew something wasn’t right. They brought the 102-year-old Tamarac resident to Broward Health Coral Springs, where caregivers discovered she had outlived her pacemaker.
Pacemakers typically need to be replaced every seven to 10 years, and Veneita’s device had reached the end of its lifespan. She was admitted, and Sameer Satija, M.D., a cardiac electrophysiologist, implanted a new pacemaker to help restore her heart’s rhythm.

HCA Healthcare Reports Second Quarter 2026 Results – Revenues increased 8.7 percent to $20.230 billion
NASHVILLE, Tenn.- JULY 24, 2026 — HCA Healthcare, Inc. (NYSE: HCA) today announced financial and operating results for the second quarter ended June 30, 2026.
The Company’s financial and operating results, as well as its updated guidance and key assumptions, are consistent with its July 14, 2026 second quarter preview.
Key second quarter metrics (all percentage changes compare 2Q 2026 to 2Q 2025 unless otherwise noted):
-Revenues increased 8.7 percent to $20.230 billion
-Net income attributable to HCA Healthcare, Inc. increased 2.8 percent to $1.699 billion
-Diluted earnings per share increased 11.6 percent to $7.62 per diluted share, and diluted earnings per share, as adjusted, increased 11.0 percent to $7.59 per diluted share
-Adjusted EBITDA increased 4.6 percent to $4.027 billion
-Cash flows from operating activities totaled $2.335 billion, compared to $4.210 billion in the second quarter of 2025
-Same facility admissions increased 2.5 percent and same facility equivalent admissions increased 2.7 percent
Second Quarter Commentary
During the second quarter, the Company experienced a payer mix shift driven by an increase in uninsured volume, primarily due to patients who lost coverage on the health insurance exchanges. The Company estimates this payer mix shift had an unfavorable impact on income before income taxes of approximately $400 million during the second quarter. This amount includes an increase of approximately $75 million related to the Company’s previous estimate of the first quarter health insurance exchange impact. In addition, to a lesser degree the Company experienced a service mix shift primarily related to a decline in surgical volume.

Researchers identify a rare mutation that blocks both BTK inhibitors and next-generation BTK degraders
July 24, 2026 – Scientists at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, part of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, and collaborators have uncovered a rare genetic mutation that enables some blood cancers to evade both approved Bruton tyrosine kinase (BTK) inhibitors and newer BTK degraders, a finding that could help shape the next generation of therapies for patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and related malignancies.
Published in Cancer Discovery, the study, “Molecular and Structural Basis of Pan-Resistance to BTK Degraders and Inhibitors,” identifies a mutation known as BTK A428D as a powerful mechanism of resistance to virtually every BTK-targeted therapy currently available or in development. The findings provide new insight into how cancers evolve under treatment pressure and why some patients eventually exhaust their targeted therapy options.
