Memorial Healthcare System’s (Hollywood, FL) Frank V. Sacco Passes Away

August 23, 2024 – Frank V. Sacco, FACHE, a visionary healthcare leader and the former president and CEO of Memorial Healthcare System (MHS), has died. He was 77 years old.

Mr. Sacco led Memorial for 29 years and oversaw the Hollywood-based organization’s growth from a single hospital to one of the largest public healthcare systems in South Florida. His relentless focus on safety, quality, and the highest quality patient-centered care was the foundation on which the modern-day Memorial was built. Those values and the internal culture he cultivated and instilled remain in place to this day, nearly a decade after his retirement.

Memorial Primary Care Opens City of Hollywood’s Employee Health Center

August 21, 2024 – It will now be easier for those connected to the City of Hollywood’s self-insurance program to access medical services, thanks to a unique alliance with Memorial Healthcare System that provides a dedicated primary care office exclusively for their use.

The “City of Hollywood Employee Health Center” offers primary and urgent care services, vaccines, lab work, and chronic disease management for both adults and children eight years and older to more than 2,000 of the city’s employees, dependents, and area retirees. Its Stirling Road location and six day a week availability makes it easier for individuals to proactively access care and avoid crisis situations that could require visits to hospital emergency rooms.

Transforming Treatment Through Research Clinical Trials Offer Hope for the Future of Gynecologic Cancer Treatment

August 22, 2024- Clinical trials at Broward Health are transforming the treatment of advanced gynecologic cancers, offering new lifelines to patients in the fight for their lives. The health system is participating in clinical trials designed to provide new treatment options for patients with advanced and recurrent ovarian and endometrial cancer.

“At Broward Health, we are very passionate about gynecologic cancer research,” said Scott E. Jordan, M.D., FACOG, gynecologic oncologist with the Broward Health Physician Group. “We prioritize research in our practice model.”

THE GLORIOSA TRIAL

The first trial, GLORIOSA, offers new maintenance therapy options for patients with recurrent platinum-sensitive ovarian, fallopian tube or primary peritoneal cancer with high folate receptor-alpha expression.

“The world of ovarian cancer treatment is changing rapidly, and many former recurrence therapies are now first-line treatments, so we are working on new second-line options,” Dr. Jordan said. “We are hoping this trial will keep patients disease-free for as long as possible, and if they do experience a recurrence, they will hopefully respond better to chemotherapy.”

THE SELINEXOR TRIAL

In the past two years, endometrial cancer treatment has changed completely.

“Where survival often used to be less than a year, we’re now seeing survival on the order of multiple years,” Dr. Jordan said. “Patients who we never thought would have a chance of cure now have a very realistic chance of cure.”

Mpox – African Region by WHO

Situation at a glance

On 14 August 2024, the WHO Director-General determined that the upsurge of mpox in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and a growing number of countries in Africa constitutes a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) under the International Health Regulations (2005) (IHR), the highest level of alarm under the IHR. Here we describe the latest countries in the region newly reporting cases since the start of the multi-country outbreak in 2022. The clade Ib MPXV outbreak, which began in September 2023 in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, is having an increasing number of cases in the country and also expanding to neighbouring countries. Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda have each reported their first mpox cases. Several of these cases have travel links to eastern parts of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and each of these countries has identified clade Ib monkeypox virus (MPXV). Based on available epidemiological data, this clade has been spreading rapidly among adults through close physical contact, including sexual contact identified within networks of sex workers and their clients. As the virus spreads further, the affected groups are changing, with the virus also taking hold within households and other settings. Additionally, Cote d’Ivoire is reporting cases of clade II mpox for the first time since the start of the multi-country outbreak in 2022.

Description of the situation

Described below are the latest countries in the African region newly affected by mpox, either clade I or clade II, since the start of the multi-country outbreak in 2022. Additional countries in the region are continuing to report cases, please refer to the latest situation report published for an update on these countries including the latest epidemiological trends.

Cross-Country Motorcyclist Rides Again After Brain Surgery at Broward Health Medical Center

August 22, 2024 – In August 2022, Thomas Lee, an information technology director, began experiencing frequent slight headaches. Initially, he didn’t think much of it, attributing it to spending long hours in front of a computer. However, his condition quickly escalated.

“I had the worst headache of my life and felt nauseous,” Lee said. Initially dismissing it as a typical headache, he pushed through his workday. However, by lunchtime, the pain had worsened significantly, so the Fort Lauderdale resident decided to leave work early, hoping rest would help.

For the next four days, Lee felt very ill and weak. “I thought I had the flu, COVID-19 or food poisoning,” Lee said. “I decided to ride out whatever I had and mostly slept during those days.”

Lee’s mother became very concerned after not hearing from him. She flew in from Arizona and took him to the Emergency Department at Broward Health Medical Center.

“I was having trouble seeing, it was difficult to focus and everything looked blurry,” Lee said. “That’s when I realized I was losing my vision.”

Blood pressure program launches at Mandel Public Library in downtown West Palm Beach

American Heart Association’s “Libraries with Heart” gives patrons free access to blood pressure monitors and guidelines

Fall Sports in South Florida: Safety and Health Tips from West Boca Medical Center

AUGUST 22, 2024 – As the temperatures in South Florida start to cool down slightly, the excitement for fall sports heats up. From football to soccer, and from cheerleading to cross country, the region comes alive with athletic activities. However, while these sports offer numerous benefits, they also come with certain risks. West Boca Medical Center is dedicated to ensuring that young athletes stay safe and healthy through the season. With our specialized pediatric emergency room and a free-standing ER in Coconut Creek, we are always prepared to handle sports-related injuries and emergencies.

Concussion Safety

Concussions are a significant concern in contact sports such as football and soccer. These injuries occur when a blow to the head or body causes the brain to move rapidly within the skull. It’s crucial to recognize the signs of a concussion, which include headaches, confusion, dizziness, nausea, and balance problems. At West Boca Medical Center, our medical professionals emphasize the importance of proper diagnosis and treatment.

Here are some key safety tips for preventing and managing concussions:

Wear Proper Gear: Ensure that helmets and other protective gear fit properly and are in good condition.

Educate Players and Coaches: Everyone involved should be aware of the signs and symptoms of concussions.

Update on pending Medicare payment cuts by FMA

By Jarrod Fowler, MHA, FMA Director of Health Care Policy and Innovation

What’s happening?
Next year, physicians face a 2.8% Medicare conversion factor cut. This significant pay reduction is largely the result of Congress’ unwillingness to statutorily fix the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule. For years, physicians have been telling federal lawmakers that the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule is unsustainable. Year after year of cuts have further destabilized the traditional Medicare program and left physicians wondering whether they’ll have to cut back on providing care to vulnerable seniors to keep their practices economically solvent.

How did we get here?
Medicare payments to physicians have lagged behind inflation for decades, even as payments to hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, Medicare Advantage plans, and other entities have received considerable pay increases. Despite strong advocacy from physician organizations, Congress has yet to take action to prevent this pending crisis. Meanwhile, more and more physicians are being forced to consolidate their practices, limit Medicare patients, and contemplate whether they’ll be able to continue seeing Medicare patients in the future. The CMS Office of the Actuary and the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission have acknowledged the problem that this lack of payment updates has created.

NIH-funded study finds long COVID affects adolescents differently than younger children

Adolescents were most likely to experience low energy/tiredness while children were most likely to report headache.

August 21, 2024- Scientists investigating long COVID in youth found similar but distinguishable patterns between school-age children (ages 6-11 years) and adolescents (ages 12-17 years) and identified their most common symptoms. The study, supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and published in JAMA, comes from research conducted through the NIH’s Researching COVID to Enhance Recovery (RECOVER) Initiative(link is external), a wide-reaching effort to understand, diagnose, treat, and prevent long COVID, a condition marked by symptoms and health problems that linger after an infection with SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19.

Children and adolescents were found to experience prolonged symptoms after SARS-CoV-2 infection in almost every organ system with most having symptoms affecting more than one system.
