DUNKIN’ ‘PROM TO REMEMBER’ THRILLS TEENS AT JOE DIMAGGIO CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL
June 12, 2023 – More than 40 teens whose health may have prevented them from attending a traditional school prom were treated to an evening of food, drink, music, and party favors at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. The ‘Prom to Remember,’ a collaboration of the Dunkin’ Joy in Childhood Foundation and the children’s hospital’s nonprofit foundation, made sure the kids didn’t miss the opportunity to get dressed up, celebrate with friends, and enjoy a teenage milestone.
Attendees were provided Macy’s gift cards to purchase a special outfit for the ‘Disco Fever’-themed prom in Hollywood. They were surprised to see what the hospital’s Child Life Zone had been transformed into, with disco balls, marquee lights, and shimmer walls making it feel like a real dance club. A caricature artist, airbrushed tattoos, 360-degree video and photo booths, and raffle prizes added to the fun. The two most recent Miss Florida USA title holders, Caroline Dixon and Taylor Fulford, were on hand to share the special occasion with those whose lives have been turned upside-down by illness.

The full-service mental and behavioral health organization is positioned to meet the growing need for mental and behavioral health in the community
June 12, 2023 – SalusCare celebrates 10 years since it was created after a merger between two long-standing mental and behavioral health agencies, Southwest Florida Addition Services and Lee Mental Health. The merger created the largest nonprofit mental health and substance abuse treatment agency in Southwest Florida.

“We offer the full continuum of behavioral health services,” says Stacey Cook, who had been with Lee Mental Health for 18 years before becoming the CEO of Salus Care in 2016. “It’s a huge win for the community to have all services truly connected.”
SalusCare is working to address the growing need for mental, behavioral and addiction services, which has been on the rise in the past few years. Cook says she expects the need to triple in the next five to 10 years.

JESSE M. EHRENFELD, M.D., INAUGURATED AS 178TH AMA PRESIDENT
June 13, 2023 – Jesse M. Ehrenfeld, M.D., M.P.H, an anesthesiologist from Wisconsin, was sworn in today as the 178th president of the American Medical Association (AMA), the nation’s premier physician organization. At his inauguration, Dr. Ehrenfeld spoke about health inequities and injustices, saying “the AMA has made tremendous strides in recent years to recognize past wrongs, to take a stand against discriminatory practices in medicine, to stand on the side of justice and equity, and to partner with allies who are committed to advancing the rights of all patients to receive equitable care.”
Additionally, throughout his presidential year, Dr. Ehrenfeld will focus on advocating for the AMA Recovery Plan for America’s Physicians.
“Both physicians and the public look to the AMA for leadership … for guidance … for reassurance … and for help making sense of our complex world,” Dr. Ehrenfeld said in prepared remarks. “At a time when so many aspects of society have become dangerously polarized, we have seen the proliferation of medical disinformation, junk science, the criminalization of medical care, and a growing distrust in medical institutions and experts.

BIDEN-HARRIS ADMINISTRATION ANNOUNCES NEW YORK’S MEDICAID AND CHIP POSTPARTUM COVERAGE EXPANSION; 35 STATES & D.C. NOW OFFER FULL YEAR OF COVERAGE AFTER PREGNANCY
Thanks to the Biden-Harris Administration’s efforts to strengthen maternal health, an estimated 509,000 Americans annually are now eligible
On June 13, 2023 the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), through the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), announced New York’s extension of comprehensive coverage after pregnancy through Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) for postpartum individuals for a full 12 months. Today’s announcement marks critical progress in implementing the CMS Maternity Care Action Plan, which supports the Biden-Harris Administration’s Maternal Health Blueprint, a comprehensive strategy aimed at improving maternal health, particularly in underserved communities. New York is the 35th state to be approved for the extended coverage, made possible by President Biden’s American Rescue Plan (ARP) and made permanent by the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2023 (CAA, 2023), which President Biden signed into law earlier this year.
“New York’s decision to extend postpartum coverage for a full year after pregnancy marks a significant milestone for improving maternal health,” said HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra. “The Biden-Harris Administration has demonstrated leadership in confronting the nation’s maternal mortality and morbidity crisis, and HHS will continue to support policies and programs that help ensure the health of mothers and babies.”

NIH AND FDA LEADERS CALL FOR MORE RESEARCH, LOWER BARRIERS TO IMPROVE AND IMPLEMENT DRUG-CHECKING TOOLS AMID OVERDOSE EPIDEMIC
Tools such as fentanyl test strips hold promise to reduce drug-related harms and save lives.
JUNE 12, 2023 – In a new Commentary in the New England Journal of Medicine, leaders at the National Institutes of Health and U.S. Food and Drug Administration highlight the urgent need to address current gaps in the research, development, and implementation of fentanyl test strips and other rapid drug-detecting tools that could help prevent overdose deaths. These tools have the potential to save lives and to serve as an important part of harm reduction toolkits but often remain inaccessible because of gaps in research and various other barriers, including state or legal prohibitions. This call to action encourages new collaborations among researchers and agencies to ensure the effectiveness of fentanyl test strips and promote the development of additional drug-checking technologies. It also encourages the reduction of barriers that inhibit use of these technologies where not prohibited by law.

INTRAOCULAR CORTICOSTEROIDS BEST FOR TREATING COMPLICATIONS OF CHRONIC INFLAMMATORY EYE CONDITION
Uveitis is inflammation of the eye originating in the uvea, which includes the iris, ciliary body, and choroid. Credit: Lesley Earl, NEINEI
JUNE 13 2023 – Repeat treatment with corticosteroid injections improved vision in people with persistent or recurrent uveitis-related macular edema better than two other therapies, according to results from a clinical trial funded by the National Eye Institute (NEI). Compared with methotrexate or ranibizumab intravitreal (in-the-eye) injections, the corticosteroid treatment achieved greater reductions in retinal swelling and was the only therapy in the study that improved vision. The report was published today in the journal Ophthalmology. NEI is part of the National Institutes of Health.
“Prior to this study, we didn’t know the best treatment for persistent or recurrent macular edema, a major cause of vision loss in people with uveitis,” said Douglas A. Jabs, M.D., Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, Baltimore, chair of the study. “This trial strongly indicates that repeat intraocular corticosteroid injections are superior to either intravitreal injections of methotrexate or ranibizumab.”
