Baptist Health Foundation Announces Historic $100 Million Gift from Dr. Herbert Wertheim
May 20, 2026 – Baptist Health Foundation today announced the largest single philanthropic gift in the 66-year history of Baptist Health South Florida: a $100 million donation from internationally recognized optometric physician, inventor, entrepreneur and philanthropist Dr. Herbert (“Herbie”) Wertheim, who views the gift as a continuation of his commitment to public service. By focusing exclusively on this partnership and prioritizing this investment, he aims to create a scalable model for increasing healthcare access and innovation across America.
Dr. Herbie Wertheim is the founder of Brain Power Incorporated, a Miami-based optical products manufacturer and visionary member of the Florida Inventors Hall of Fame for his pioneering innovations in optical technology, including the invention of ultraviolet (UV) and Blue Light absorbing tint protection for eyeglass lenses, which have saved millions of lives from Cataracts disease and macular degeneration worldwide; he was the first doctor to discover and alert the dangers the harmful damages of UV light and Blue Light for eyesight. An internationally recognized healthcare and education philanthropist, Dr. Wertheim has dedicated much of his career to expanding access to scientific discovery, preventative healthcare, medical innovation and higher education.
The gift advances Power Extraordinary: The Campaign for Baptist Health, the Foundation’s multi-year initiative supporting patient care, medical research, clinical expertise and innovation across the organization.
In recognition of Dr. Herbert (“Herbie”) Wertheim’s inspiring generosity, Baptist Health Miami Cancer Institute will be renamed the Baptist Health Herbert Wertheim Cancer Institute. The gift will also establish the Herbert Wertheim Cancer Institute Transformational Impact Fund, a $100 million designated fund dedicated to advancing cancer care, research, prevention, education and innovation across Baptist Health. The Fund will provide strategic, long-term support to strengthen and grow the Institute, including expanding cancer research, clinical excellence and innovative models of care.

| Holy Cross Health’s $41 Million Deerfield Beach Center Is Now Open
New freestanding emergency department and multispecialty health center brings 24/7 care to northern Broward County for the first time
May 18, 2026 – Holy Cross Health marked a major step forward in expanding access to care with the opening of the Holy Cross Health Center & Emergency Care — Deerfield Beach. The outpatient health center and emergency department began welcoming patients on Monday, May 18.
This $41 million investment expands access to high-level care in a region where demand has continued to grow, building on 70 years of Holy Cross caring for South Florida communities.
Located at 340 South Federal Highway, the 25,000 square-foot center brings together a freestanding emergency department and a full outpatient health center with primary care, specialty services, physical therapy, and on-site lab and imaging, allowing patients to transition from urgent needs to ongoing care in one place.
“For decades, families have turned to Holy Cross Health during some of the most important moments in their lives,” said Pierre Monice, MBA, FACHE, President and CEO of Holy Cross Health. “This center brings that same care closer to home. It means less time on the road and more time getting the care you need. When something feels wrong, where you go matters. This gives our community a place they can count on.”
That level of care is carried through in the emergency department, open 24/7 and staffed by board-certified emergency physicians, with 14 private exam rooms; a dedicated ambulance bay; advanced imaging such as CT, X-ray and ultrasound; and an on-site lab to support timely diagnosis and treatment of serious illnesses and injuries. If additional care is needed, patients can be transferred directly to Holy Cross Health in Fort Lauderdale, where shared medical records through MyChart help keep care connected from arrival through follow-up.
At the Holy Cross Health Center, 21 exam rooms and multiple specialties are all in one place, allowing patients to see their primary care provider, visit a specialist, attend physical therapy and complete lab work without leaving the building. For people living in Deerfield Beach, Boca Raton and surrounding communities, it changes how care fits into everyday life. It means fewer long drives for routine care, easier follow-ups after an emergency visit and a place families can rely on without leaving their community.

Miami Dade College and Jackson Health System Announce Plans to Launch Health Science Charter High School
May 14, 2026 — Miami Dade College (MDC) and Jackson Health System are uniting to open Health Science Charter High School, designed to prepare students for careers in health care and address South Florida’s growing workforce needs. Leaders from the two institutions will share details of this transformative partnership during a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signing ceremony on Monday, May 18, at 1:30 p.m. at MDC’s Medical Campus. Working media are welcome to attend.
The school represents a first-of-its-kind collaboration between MDC and Jackson Health System focused on developing the next generation of health care professionals while expanding educational and career opportunities for Miami-Dade County students.
“The launch of the Health Science Charter High School reflects what is possible when education and industry come together to advance student success and strengthen our community,” said MDC President Madeline Pumariega. “Through this partnership with Jackson Health System, we are building a powerful pipeline of future health care professionals who will serve with skill, compassion and purpose, while helping meet one of South Florida’s most critical workforce needs.”
Set to open in August 2027 in Miami’s Health District, the Health Science Charter High School will create an innovative educational pathway for students interested in pursuing careers in nursing, allied health, health care administration and other high-demand medical fields. Through early exposure to health care education, hands-on learning opportunities and access to college-level coursework, students will gain the academic foundation and practical experience needed to thrive in the health care industry.
“As Miami-Dade County continues to grow, so does the need for world-class health care and a strong pipeline of skilled medical professionals,” said Carlos A. Migoya, CEO of Jackson Health System.

Camille Ruvo Honored for Advancing Alzheimer’s Research and Care at Global Women’s Health + WAM Forum
May 19, 2026 – Camille Ruvo, chairwoman and co-founder of Keep Memory Alive, was recognized with the Women’s Alzheimer’s Movement (WAM) Award for Leadership in Philanthropy and Alzheimer’s Prevention Research during the Cleveland Clinic Global Women’s Health + WAM Forum last week. Ruvo was honored for her instrumental role in helping establish Las Vegas as an international hub for women-focused Alzheimer’s research.
“We wanted to honor Camille for taking her own journey of caring for someone with Alzheimer’s disease and turning it into a powerful, motivating force to drive change in the lives and futures for thousands of other families in similar circumstances,” said Maria Shriver, founder of WAM and co-founder of Cleveland Clinic’s Comprehensive Women’s Health and Research Center. “Her vision of an innovative, holistic model of care is today being emulated by other institutions around the country.”
After seeing firsthand the impact Alzheimer’s disease can have on families, Ruvo and her husband, Larry Ruvo, dedicated themselves to advancing how the disease is studied, prevented and supported. She has been a driving force behind the growth of the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health, supporting research, clinical care and caregiver services. She also played a key role in launching the Women’s Alzheimer’s Movement (WAM) Prevention and Research Center in Las Vegas to address women’s disproportionate risk for the disease, as well as the program’s expansion to serve women in Ohio.

Bay of Pigs Veteran Honored in Heartfelt Bedside Ceremony in Miami
May 20 ,2026 – Humberto Solis Jurado, an 89-year-old Bay of Pigs veteran whose extraordinary journey included surviving the failed 1961 invasion of Cuba and escaping to safety, was recently honored with a heartfelt bedside recognition ceremony at Noelito Assisted Living in Miami. Organized by his VITAS Healthcare hospice team, the tribute celebrated Humberto’s military service, resilience and enduring legacy.
A member of Brigade 2506, Humberto was among the Cuban exiles who took part in the 1961 Bay of Pigs invasion, an effort backed by the U.S. to liberate Cuba from Fidel Castro’s regime. After the mission failed and many were captured or killed, Humberto survived by hiding in Cuba’s mangroves before ultimately escaping to the United States.
Now living with advanced dementia, Humberto was recognized by his hospice care team after Chaplain Asdrúbal Forte Verea learned of his extraordinary story during a routine visit. Working alongside Nancy Auster, VITAS veteran liaison and admissions nurse, the team organized a personalized bedside tribute honoring Humberto’s courage and sacrifice.

Encompass Health announces pricing of $500 million of senior notes due 2034 in a private offering
May 14, 2026 — Encompass Health Corp. (NYSE: EHC) today announced the pricing of a private offering of $500 million in aggregate principal amount of 5.875% senior notes due 2034 (the “Notes”) at a price of 100% of the principal amount thereof. The Company will pay interest on the Notes semiannually in arrears on June 1 and Dec. 1 of each year, beginning on Dec. 1, 2026. The Notes will be jointly and severally guaranteed on a senior unsecured basis by all of its existing and future subsidiaries that guarantee borrowings under the Company’s credit agreement and other capital markets debt. This offering is expected to close on May 29, 2026, subject to customary closing conditions.
The Company intends to use the net proceeds from this offering, together with available cash on hand, to redeem at par $400 million in aggregate principal amount of its outstanding 4.500% Senior Notes due 2028, to repay $100 million of the outstanding amounts under the Company’s senior secured revolving credit facility and to pay certain related fees and expenses in connection with the foregoing.
The Notes have been offered in the United States only to persons reasonably believed to be qualified institutional buyers pursuant to Rule 144A under the Securities Act of 1933, as amended (the “Securities Act”), and to certain non-U.S. persons in transactions outside the United States pursuant to Regulation S under the Securities Act. The offer and any sale of the Notes and the related guarantees have not been and will not be registered under the Securities Act or any state securities laws, and the Notes may not be offered or sold in the United States absent registration or an applicable exemption from the registration requirements of the Securities Act and applicable state securities laws.

May 19, 2026 — Mayo Clinic and Bayesian Health today announced they have co-developed an artificial intelligence (AI) solution to identify hospitalized patients who may benefit from palliative care earlier in their stay. The solution is designed to support timely consultations, with the objective of improving goal-concordant care for patients with serious illness and reducing non-beneficial readmissions.
Roughly one-third of readmissions involve patients with serious illness, many of whom experience repeated hospitalizations. However, fewer than half of these patients receive palliative care consultations.

Stanford Medicine’s Leanne Williams was chosen to lead the Precision Mental Health Commission to redefine and streamline how psychiatric conditions are diagnosed and treated. She’s pushing for a data-driven approach that begins with brain imaging.
Leanne Williams, PhD, often tells her Stanford Medicine colleagues who aren’t in psychiatry that her field has no data-based markers to determine what’s wrong with a patient. And then she watches their jaws drop.
“They can’t believe it,” said Williams, the inaugural Vincent V.C. Woo Professor, a professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences, and the founding director of the Stanford Center for Precision Mental Health. “It’s like walking in with an ankle injury and the doctor having no tools to assess whether it’s sprained or broken — instead they make that determination by asking you how you feel.”

NIH-supported project expands access to care for children with amblyopia
May 15, 2026 – A group of pediatric eye disease researchers supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has launched an open-access tool designed to help manage pediatric cases of amblyopia, a condition in which the brain fails to properly develop normal vision in one or both eyes early in life. It is the leading cause of preventable single-eye (monocular) vision loss, affecting three of every 100 children in the nation. The tool is aimed at expanding access to evidence-based amblyopia clinical-decision-making expertise amidst a shortage of pediatric eye care specialists in the United States.
“This online tool quickly distills the relevant literature into individualized treatment advice for busy clinicians anywhere with internet access. Those without internet access can utilize the article figures as clinical reference sheets,” said article lead author, Allison Summers, O.D., associate professor, Oregon Health & Science University, Portland.

CDC Provides Update on Hantavirus Outbreak Linked to M/V Hondius Cruise Ship
On May 18, 2026, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed that 18 recently repatriated U.S. passengers from the M/V Hondius cruise ship were requested to remain at the Nebraska Quarantine Facility through May 31, 2026, which would be the 21-day mark of their monitoring period. Since the passengers disembarked from the ship, three additional cases of hantavirus have been identified — one each in France, Spain, and recently, Canada.

Tampa General Hospital Opens TGH Weight Management and Metabolic Health Center
The program provides comprehensive, physician-supervised medical care for patients with obesity in the Palm Beaches.
May 18, 2026– Tampa General Hospital (TGH) has launched a new clinic, TGH Weight Management and Metabolic Health Center, to deliver comprehensive, physician-supervised medical care for adults with obesity in the Palm Beaches and on the Treasure Coast. The center is supported by the advanced clinical expertise and coordinated services of Tampa General Hospital, Florida’s premier academic health system.
Dr. David B. Schwimmer, a gastroenterologist board certified in obesity medicine, will serve as medical director and supervise the clinic, which will be located in Palm Beach Gardens and West Palm Beach.
The TGH Weight Management and Metabolic Health Center serves adults age 18 and older who meet one or more of the following criteria:
