MEMORIAL FACILITIES EARN TEACHING HOSPITAL DESIGNATION FROM STATE AGENCY
OCTOBER 26, 2023 – Memorial Regional Hospital (including Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital), Memorial Regional Hospital South, and Memorial Hospital West have all achieved statutory teaching hospital designation from the State of Florida’s Agency for Health Care Administration (ACHA). Prior to Memorial’s inclusion, fewer than 12% of the more than 325 hospitals in Florida had been accorded this status.
The statutory teaching hospital designation is granted to hospitals with at least 100 or more full-time resident physicians in seven or more graduate medical education programs accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or the Council on Postdoctoral Training of the American Osteopathic Association.
“We were able to secure these designations after only five years as a graduate medical education (GME) program, solidifying our standing as a major academic medical center,” said Saima Chaudhry, MD, Memorial Healthcare System’s chief academic officer. “It also makes our program more attractive to residents, fellows, and teaching faculty as we maintain our commitment to train South Florida’s next generation of physicians and specialists.”

TAMPA GENERAL HOSPITAL PERFORMS THE FIRST PEDIATRIC SLEEP APNEA IMPLANT SURGERY IN FLORIDA
The first use of the implant device reflects the academic health system’s commitment to an integrated, multidisciplinary approach to care that addresses the varied and unique needs of pediatric patients.
November 1, 2023 – Tampa General Hospital (TGH) is announcing a significant milestone for its comprehensive, nationally recognized, TGH Ear, Nose & Throat (ENT) Institute, the successful completion of an Inspire® implant surgery on a pediatric patient diagnosed with Down syndrome and sleep apnea. The groundbreaking procedure is the first of its kind in Florida.
The surgery was performed by University of South Florida (USF) Health otolaryngologist Dr. Abhay Sharma, assistant professor and director of the Division of Interventional Sleep Surgery at the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine. He was assisted by Dr. Tapan Padhya, chief of the TGH ENT Institute, professor, chair and chief, Division of Head and Neck Oncology, professor and chair of the Department of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery, USF Health Morsani College of Medicine, and founder and co-director of the USF Health ENT Sleep and Snoring Center. Both are full-time academic faculty members in the Department of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery, USF Health Morsani College of Medicine.
“More than half of children with the genetic disorder Down syndrome have sleep apnea,” Padhya said. “This implantable device marks a substantial improvement in obstructive sleep apnea care for preteens and teenagers with Down syndrome and provides greater peace of mind for their parents.”“The Inspire implant surgery is minimally invasive and the recovery time for the patient is minimal,” Sharma said. “Before this procedure, traditional treatments for Down syndrome patients with obstructive sleep apnea could include major facial surgery to separate and move a patient’s upper and lower jaws. The implantable device offers a gentler treatment for these young patients.”

ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE AWARENESS MONTH: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
by Isabel Souffront, M.D.
Chief Medical Officer of Conviva Broward County
The most common form of dementia, Alzheimer’s Disease, affects an estimated 6.7 million American seniors. That’s about 1 in 9 people aged 65 and older.
November marks Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month, an important time to know the facts of this illness that affects so many but has yet to have a cure. Researchers are still working to discover what causes the disease.
A progressive loss of memory that affects its victims both cognitively and physically, Alzheimer’s symptoms start to manifest in patients after age 60. About 3 million new cases are diagnosed each year. Aside from its prevalence among seniors, Alzheimer’s tends to more commonly prey on women and minorities. Consider these statistics:
Women represent two-thirds of the nation’s Alzheimer’s cases.
Older African-Americans are about twice as likely to have Alzheimer’s or other dementias versus their White counterparts. Older Hispanics are about 1.5 times as likely to have Alzheimer’s or other dementias compared to older Whites.

FLOSPINE REVOLUTIONIZES TREATMENT FOR SPINAL STENOSIS WITH FDA CLEARANCE OF KEYLIFT™ SYSTEM
KeyLift is the fifth FDA-approved product developed by FloSpine, all invented at the Research Park at Florida Atlantic University®.
BOCA RATON, Fla. – November 1, 2023 – Together with FloSpine, the Research Park at Florida Atlantic University® is pleased to announce that FloSpine has achieved 510(k) clearance for its KeyLift™ Expandable Interlaminar Stabilization System from the FDA, and has expanded out of the Global Ventures entrepreneur support center into a new, larger office to support its growth.
The newly approved device addresses spinal stenosis, a common and debilitating condition that affects more than 100 million people worldwide, resulting in approximately 600,000 surgeries annually in the United States alone. It occurs when the spinal canal narrows, causing pressure on the nerves and leading to severe back and leg pain, weakness, and numbness. Traditional treatment options for spinal stenosis have often involved invasive surgical procedures with lengthy recovery times. The KeyLift system introduces a less invasive alternative, enabling spine and interventional pain physicians to administer this revolutionary treatment in an outpatient surgery center.

EXTREME HEAT PROJECTED TO INCREASE CARDIOVASCULAR DEATHS
NIH-funded study predicts older and Black adults will suffer most.
October 30, 2023 – Cardiovascular-related deaths due to extreme heat(link is external) are expected to increase between 2036 and 2065 in the United States, according to a study supported by the National Institutes of Health. The researchers, whose work is published in Circulation(link is external), predict that adults ages 65 and older and Black adults will likely be disproportionately affected.
While extreme heat currently accounts for less than 1% of cardiovascular-related deaths, the modeling analysis predicted this will change because of a projected rise in summer days that feel at least 90 degrees. This heat index, which factors in what the temperature feels like with humidity, measures extreme temperature. Older adults and Black adults will be most vulnerable because many have underlying medical conditions or face socioeconomic barriers that can influence their health – such as not having air conditioning or living in locations that can absorb and trap heat, known as “heat islands(link is external).”
