Broward Health Names Cornelius Powell, M.D. New Chief Medical Officer of Broward Health North
JUNE 4, 2026 – Broward Health is pleased to announce the appointment of Cornelius Powell, M.D., MBA, CHCQM, as the new chief medical officer of Broward Health North.
“Dr. Powell is a dynamic physician leader with a proven record of advancing clinical excellence, operational performance and patient-centered care,” said Matthew Garner, CEO of Broward Health North. “His extensive leadership experience, commitment to quality and ability to drive meaningful results make him an outstanding addition to Broward Health North, and our entire healthcare system.”
A board-certified emergency physician and accomplished healthcare executive, Dr. Powell brings extensive experience leading complex hospital operations, quality initiatives and physician engagement strategies across major health systems nationwide. Most recently, he served as vice president and chief medical officer of Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center in Virginia, overseeing medical affairs, quality, infection prevention, trauma services, critical care, hospital medicine and multiple clinical service lines.
During his tenure at Sentara Williamsburg, Dr. Powell helped launch new programs in trauma, minimally invasive gynecologic surgery and obstetrics, while achieving top system-wide performance metrics in patient safety, quality outcomes and patient experience. Under his leadership, the hospital earned a Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade “A” recognition and achieved significant improvements in readmissions, emergency department throughput and length of stay metrics.
Prior to his role at Sentara Williamsburg, Dr. Powell held several senior leadership positions, including regional medical director and vice president of operations for American Physician Partners, where he supervised more than 200 physicians and advanced practice clinicians across multiple states. He also served in leadership roles at Tucson Medical Center and John Peter Smith Hospital, overseeing large emergency departments and implementing operational improvements that significantly enhanced patient satisfaction, efficiency and clinical quality.

| $1 Million Culverhouse Donation Establishes New University of Miami Endowment for Lung Disease Care
Funding will expand a specialized clinic and support research into complex respiratory conditions
June 11, 2026 — A $1 million gift from Coral Gables attorney, businessman and philanthropist Hugh Culverhouse Jr. will expand specialized care and research at UHealth – the University of Miami Health System, and the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, for patients with serious lung diseases that are often underdiagnosed, difficult to treat and capable of causing long-term damage when care is delayed.
The donation will support the Miller School’s Bronchiectasis and Nontuberculous Mycobacteria Clinic, led by renowned pulmonologist, Lisa Domaradzki, M.D. helping expand access to physicians and researchers focused on complex respiratory conditions that can leave patients struggling for years with persistent coughing, recurring infections, shortness of breath and declining lung function.
After completing her residency and fellowship training at Penn State University, Dr. Domaradzki joined the faculty at the University of Miami in 2020, she is now the director of the Bronchiectasis and Nontuberculous Mycobacterial Clinic and the associate director of the Cystic Fibrosis Center. Through these roles, she provides dedicated care to patients with complex respiratory conditions, leveraging advanced therapies and personalized treatment approaches.
“Our goal is to shorten the time to diagnosis and expand access to specialty care” said Dr. Domaradzki. “The more we educate physicians and the public, the faster patients can reach the care they deserve—and the less they suffer.”

JUNE 11, 2026- Broward Health proudly celebrated its largest Graduate Medical Education (GME) graduating class. A total of 111 physicians completed their residency and fellowship training across 20 clinical programs.
A notable group among this year’s graduates was the Family Medicine Residency Class, which marked a significant milestone as the program’s 30th graduating group. The ceremony honored the achievements of the graduating residents while recognizing the faculty members, chief residents and mentors whose dedication helped guide the next generation of physicians. The event celebrated the commitment, resilience and professional growth demonstrated by residents throughout their training journey.

Established Provider Will Nearly Triple Capacity with Relocation

Study: Mesothelioma Cases and Deaths Rise Despite Decades of Asbestos Regulation
JUNE 11, 2026 – Mesothelioma deaths and diagnoses continue to rise in the United States despite decades of asbestos regulation and reduced industrial use, according to a new national analysis from Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, part of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. The study also found little improvement in survival and showed that this overwhelmingly preventable cancer continues to disproportionately affect women and several high-risk states tied to shipbuilding, mining and legacy asbestos exposure.
Mesothelioma is often described as a disease of the past, an echo of an era when asbestos was woven into ships, factories and buildings across the country. But the new study shows that this rare cancer still casts a long and uneven shadow across the United States, shaped by geography, sex and decades‑old exposures that continue to surface today.
In one of the most comprehensive national and state‑level analyses to date, researchers tracked mesothelioma incidence, mortality and disability burden across all 50 states from 1990 to 2023. Their findings reveal a paradox: while rates have declined overall, the absolute burden of disease continues to rise, and progress has not been shared equally.
The study, “Geographic, Temporal, and Sex-Specific Trends in Mesothelioma Burden in the United States, 1990–2023,” appears in JCO Global Oncology.

June 11, 2026 – United Way Broward’s Coalition on Behavioral Health & Drug Prevention, in partnership with the Broward Behavioral Health Coalition (BBHC) and the Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF), successfully hosted the 11th Annual South Florida Behavioral Health Conference: The Power of Prevention, held May 27-28, 2026, at The Diplomat Beach Resort in Hollywood. The two-day Conference brought together nearly 1,000 clinicians, policymakers, educators, prevention specialists, community leaders, and behavioral health professionals from across Florida and beyond to explore innovative approaches to prevention, treatment, recovery, and mental wellness.
The Conference featured nationally recognized keynote speakers including Kevin Hines, a globally renowned suicide prevention advocate; Ryan Jenkins, leadership futurist and bestselling author; Allan Kehler, mental health advocate and addictions counselor; and Rick Griffin, neuroscience educator and founder of the Neuro Leadership Academy. Through keynote presentations, workshops, and continuing education sessions, attendees examined critical topics including trauma-informed care, suicide prevention, workforce development, resilience, integrated care models, and behavioral health policies. Weston Girl Scout Troops Donate 110 Pounds of Cereal to Cleveland Clinic Florida’s Food Drive
June 11, 2026 – Cheerio! Girl Scout Troops 10055 and 10330 from Weston, Florida want to be the lucky charms for peers whose families face food insecurity. They donated more than 110 pounds of cereal to Cleveland Clinic Florida’s cereal drive in hopes that no kid will go hungry this summer. Cleveland Clinic Florida will sort the donations, and the cereal will be given to local food banks. During their hospital visit, the girls also learned about careers in medicine from Katrin Arnolds, MD, an OB/GYN and mom of a Girl Scout.
The Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida recently held their own successful food drive called Feeding Florida Together. Eight hundred forty girls from 82 troops in Broward, Palm Beach, Martin, St. Lucie, Indian River and Okeechobee Counties clocked 327 volunteer hours and donated 6,560 pounds of food to 45 pantries and collection centers.

Endometriosis and fibroids: Expert explains advances giving women less invasive treatment options
JUNE 11, 2026 – — Endometriosis and uterine fibroids are two of the most common gynecological conditions. While they have important differences, they also have things in common. Both can lead to serious complications, affect fertility and have symptoms related to the menstrual cycle. And both are the focus of medical innovations to give women better treatment options, explains Megan Wasson, D.O., a gynecologist and chair of gynecology at Mayo Clinic in Arizona.
“They’re both relatively common,” Dr. Wasson says. “There can be some overlapping symptoms, but the majority of symptoms vary and the diseases progress differently. Fibroids and endometriosis can run in families. Neither condition is preventable.”
Fibroids
Fibroids grow in the uterus. They are almost always noncancerous. You can have one or more. A fibroid may be too small to see with the eyes alone or it can grow as big as a grapefruit or larger, even filling the pelvis or stomach area and making someone appear pregnant.
“These are not just little inconveniences. These are very large, very significant masses and they can really impact quality of life,” Dr. Wasson says.

UT MD Anderson joins global consortium committed to eliminating cervical cancer
JUNE 10, 2026 – The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center today announced it has joined a global consortium dedicated to accelerating the elimination of cervical cancer worldwide. The collaboration agreement with the Elimination Partnership in Cervical Cancer (EPICC) expands UT MD Anderson’s global oncology efforts, further strengthening its commitment to advancing cancer prevention and control in medically underserved regions.
The EPICC program, led by the University of Sydney in collaboration with a consortium of local and global partners, is funded by the Australian Government and the Minderoo Foundation. The initiative works to improve sustainable health outcomes and equity and to support national cervical cancer elimination strategies around the world. The program provides a mix of technical, policy and implementation support for vaccination, screening and treatment in more than nine countries.

Dr. Raymond Jacobson selected as director of the NIH Center for Scientific Review

JUNE 11, 2026 – National Institutes of Health (NIH) Director Jay Bhattacharya, M.D., today announced the selection of Raymond H. Jacobson, Ph.D., as the director of NIH’s Center for Scientific Review (CSR), which ensures expert and fair review of the tens of thousands of grant applications received by the agency each year. Dr. Jacobson will begin his role on June 14, 2026.
“Dr. Jacobson will continue strengthening NIH’s centralized peer review system so that we can continue backing the most scientifically meritorious research ideas in support of NIH’s mission,” said Dr. Bhattacharya. “His leadership will help ensure the first level of NIH review remains rigorous, fair, and transparent for all applicants.”
Prior to his selection, Dr. Jacobson served as CSR’s acting director following the retirement of Dr. Bruce Reed. Dr. Jacobson helped guide NIH’s centralization of peer review, and as Acting Deputy Director of the NIH Office of Extramural Research in 2025, he advanced efforts to reduce administrative burden and address challenges faced by applicants. Additionally, he was the director of the CSR Division of Receipt and Referral beginning in December 2024, where he led efforts to simplify application receipt and referral policies.

NIH research establishes new framework for the role of senescence in aging
First large-scale atlas of senescent cells could help inform future therapies for age-related diseases.
JUNE 11, 2026 – A research consortium funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH)has established a new framework to identify and catalog senescent cells – cells that stop dividing but remain active in the body. Because senescent cells accumulate with age and are thought to contribute to many age-related conditions, researchers are working to better understand the roles they play in health and disease. In a compendium of papers published in the June 11 issue of Cell, the consortium presents the first comprehensive atlas of senescent cells across the human body, a foundational step toward developing new therapies for age-related diseases.
In healthy tissues, senescent cells support wound healing and serve as a defense mechanism by preventing the growth of tumors. They are normally cleared by the immune system, but as immune function declines with age, senescent cells accumulate in the body instead of being eliminated. Over time, these cells then release harmful signals that contribute to chronic disease and other age-related conditions. While removing these cells has been shown to diminish the impact of aging, their rarity and diversity have made them difficult to study.
