More than $3 Million raised for young hearts and it keeps coming
December 2, 2025 – The Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Foundation’s Red Gala at Pier Sixty-Six Resort & Marina recently brought together community leaders, healthcare champions and philanthropic supporters to raise well over $3 million at the event alone and then additional amounts are being donated as a result of those who attended and had an opportunity to see what Joe DiMaggio can do. The funds raised will go toward advanced life-saving care for congenital heart disease, heart failure and pediatric heart transplantation at the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Heart Institute, among other service lines provided to the patients and families treated at Joe DiMaggio.
“The Red Gala is all about community in action,” said Kelley Morris, President Memorial Foundation and Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Foundation. “When we come together with a shared purpose, we make extraordinary things happen. Our mission is simple but powerful, and it’s to ensure every child in our community has access to the very best care close to home.”

It’s Time to End Stopgap Health Care Policy

The short-term federal funding bill enacted last month reopened the federal government after the longest government shutdown on record. It also provided much-needed relief for hospitals and the patients and communities they serve.
The bill extended until January 30, 2026, vital health care programs, from telehealth and hospital-at-home to Medicare-dependent and low-volume designations for rural hospitals. It also restarted the moratorium on cuts to Medicaid disproportionate share hospital (DSH) payments.
That’s the good news.
The challenge now is to avoid additional disruptions to hospital planning and care delivery by extending the rural hospital designations for a longer term, providing long-term relief from Medicaid DSH cuts, and making hospital-at-home and telehealth permanent health care policy. January 30 will be here before we know it, and the persistent threat of expirations and the need for additional short-term extensions are not conducive to health care stability and reliability.
Predictability, reliability, and continuity of care are at stake. Rural Hospital Designations
Low-volume and Medicare-dependent designations help compensate for rural hospitals’ very real patient demographic differences. Rural residents are often older, have lower incomes, and have higher rates of chronic illness, making Medicare rural hospitals’ predominant payer. With Medicare covering only about 82 percent of hospital costs, on average, the enhanced payments made possible with the low-volume and Medicare-dependent designations help protect rural hospitals’ financial viability and, most importantly, their ability to provide care in their communities.
Short-term extensions and the continued threat of expiration of these designations put rural hospitals in an uncertain position that makes long-term financial planning more difficult and starves them of essential resources.

December 1, 2025 – Ashok Kumar Coimbatore Jeyakumar, M.D., FACS, an internationally trained cardiothoracic surgeon and recognized leader in complex aortic care, has joined Baptist Health Miami Cardiac & Vascular Institute with Baptist Health Heart & Vascular Care as director of aortic disease. Widely known as Dr. CJ, he is respected for his expertise in complex thoracic aortic surgeries, off-pump total arterial and multi-arterial coronary revascularization, and minimally invasive and robotic cardiac surgery.
Before joining Baptist Health, Dr. CJ held senior leadership roles at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, where he directed adult cardiac surgery and served as surgical director of advanced coronary revascularization and thoracic aortic surgery. There, he led programs focused on high-acuity, complex and redo cardiac operations.

Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Foundation Receives $15,000 Grant from The Toy Foundation™’s Play Fund™ to Support Children with Special Needs
December 1, 2025 – Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital (JDCH) Foundation has been awarded a $15,000 grant from The Toy Foundation™’s Play Fund to improve access to multi-sensory environments in order to ease anxieties and create a more positive and joyful patient experience.
The new project, C.A.T.C.H. (Creating a Therapeutic and Calming Hospitalization), is designed to enhance the hospital experience for children with autism spectrum disorder, neurodevelopmental disorders and behavioral health conditions by creating sensory-friendly environments that promote comfort, healing and emotional well-being.
The grant was used to fund a dedicated sensory room in Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital’s Child Life Zone and a mobile multi-sensory cart that will allow staff to quickly create customized calming and enjoyable environments for patients in any area within the hospital. The sensory environments at JDCH now feature a variety of sights, sounds and textures to reduce stress and overstimulation. These tools augment the education of staff working with special needs patients.

Holy Cross Health Primary Care Physician Dr. Robert Gioia Elected Chairperson of the Board for American Academy of HIV Medicine’s Florida Chapter
December 1, 2025 – Holy Cross Medical Group primary care physician Robert Gioia, DO, MHA, FAAFP, AAHIVS has been elected board chair of the Florida chapter of the American Academy of HIV Medicine (AAHIVM) for a two year term and will represent the state on the organization’s national board.
AAHIVM provides doctors, nurses, pharmacists and other health care workers who are not infectious disease specialists with credentials to provide HIV preventative care, treat patients with HIV and advocate for the cause.
Dr. Gioia joined AAHIVM in 2021, but this is his first time serving in a leadership position. Although it’s less than before, he feels there’s still a stigma associated with HIV that he hopes to dispel.
“HIV isn’t just a LGBTQ+ illness. It can affect anyone who is sexually active. The medications now available enable people who are being treated for HIV to live a long and healthy life,” he said. “We are effectively helping to decrease the spread of HIV in Broward County, one of the highest counties in the U.S. for new HIV cases. I have a passion for teaching and education, and in this role as chair, I’ll be able to educate other primary care physicians on how to treat HIV patients, provide preventative services and where to direct patients to receive free HIV testing and PrEP services.”
In addition to being certified by AAHIVM as an HIV specialist, Dr. Gioia is a Diplomate of the American Board of Family Medicine. Prior to joining Holy Cross Health in 2024, he was a primary care physician at Chen Senior Medical Center in North Lauderdale.

Sylvester Researchers Lead Major Treatment Overhauls for Acute Myeloid Leukemia
New guidelines call for most older adults to be offered treatment for AML, not just supportive care
DEC. 1, 2025 – A new generation of targeted treatments and gentler chemotherapy options for older adults with a new diagnosis of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is driving better survival and cure rates. Led by Mikkael Sekeres, M.D., M.S., chief of the Division of Hematology at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, part of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, the updated 2025 American Society of Hematology (ASH) AML treatment guidelines, appear Dec. 1, 2025, in the journal Blood Advances. In addition, the updated guidelines will be presented Dec . 7 at the American Society of Hematology (ASH) annual meeting in Orlando.
“The landscape of AML treatment has changed dramatically with more effective therapies,” said Sekeres. “Our clinical studies have led to FDA approval of three drugs to treat acute leukemia over the past two years.” But incorporating these new drugs into patients’ regimens is a long process.
A physician-scientist, Sekeres led the 2020 and updated 2025 official ASH AML guideline panels. The panels include leukemia experts, geriatricians and patients who reviewed and discussed the best available research. The guideline recommendations aim to walk patients and their doctors through the AML treatment decisions in a meaningful and relevant way.
For decades, the standard treatment for AML was intensive chemotherapy to destroy leukemia cells and induce remission rapidly. Even just 20 years ago, two-thirds of people over 65 didn’t get access to chemotherapy.
“We developed these guidelines to mirror the experience of an older adult’s conversations with their doctor as they’re considering treatment. The very first of those conversations is whether or not a person should receive any treatment,” said Sekeres. “We didn’t shy away from hard questions that patients and doctors ask, and I’m really proud of that.”

Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center Completes Its First Aquablation Procedure
Milestone marks another advancement in minimally invasive urologic care
December 1, 2025 – Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center is announcing the completion of its first Aquablation procedure, a minimally invasive operation to treat enlarged prostate, also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). HHS’ Cleanup of Federal Nursing Home Minimum Staffing Standards Rule Expands Access to Rural and Tribal Health Care
DECEMBER 2, 2025—Today, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) repealed provisions of the Minimum Staffing Standards for Long-Term Care (LTC) Facilities and Medicaid Institutional Payment Transparency Reporting Final Rule, originally finalized by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).
HHS takes this action after determining the final rule imposed by the Biden Administration disproportionately burdened facilities, especially those serving rural and Tribal communities, and jeopardized patient’s access to care.
Today’s decision to repeal these provisions, in alignment with the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, underscores HHS’s commitment to practical, sustainable approaches to improving nursing home care, and allows for further opportunity for engagement with community and Tribal stakeholders.
“Safe, high-quality care is essential, but rigid, one-size-fits-all mandates fail patients,” said HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. “This Administration will safeguard access to care by removing federal barriers—not by imposing requirements that limit patient choice.”
