LOURDES A. BOUE ASSUMES NEW LEADERSHIP ROLE AT BAPTIST HEALTH
November 6, 2023 – Baptist Health today announced that Lourdes A. Boue has been appointed chief executive officer of Baptist Health Doctors Hospital. She will succeed Javier Hernandez-Lichtl, who maintained executive positions with Baptist Health for more than three decades. Boue will also continue in her existing position as chief executive officer of Baptist Health West Kendall Baptist Hospital, expanding her role as the leader of both community hospitals.
Boue’s previous positions include vice president of operations for West Kendall Baptist Hospital, vice president of Baptist Outpatient Services and corporate director of strategic planning and business development for Baptist Health.

PIONEERING SYLVESTER PHYSICIAN ELECTED TO SOCIETY OF NEURO-ONCOLOGY BOARD
Macarena de la Fuente, MD, becomes first Hispanic elected to multidisciplinary board
MIAMI, FLORIDA – November 7, 2023 – Macarena de la Fuente, MD, chief of neuro-oncology at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, has been elected to the Society of Neuro-Oncology (SNO)’s board of directors.
She will serve as the neurology representative and becomes the first Hispanic elected to the multidisciplinary board, which strives to advance brain tumor research, education and collaboration.
De la Fuente has been an SNO member for over a decade and previously served as chair of the society’s membership and women and diversity committees. During her three-year term, she will be the voice of neurology on a board representing several other specialties, including neurosurgery, medical oncology, radiation oncology, pathology, pediatrics and basic science.
She plans to use her leadership platform to advance long-overdue coordination between basic and clinical neuro-oncology research that ultimately will enable revolutionary advances in brain tumor treatment and management.

AMERICAN HERITAGE SCHOOLS HOSTS ANNUAL SUPERHERO PARTY AT SALAH PEDIATRIC ONCOLOGY HOSPITAL AT BROWARD HEALTH MEDICAL CENTER
Recently, students from American Heritage Schools’ Pre-Medical Program, from both of their Broward and Palm Beach campuses, donned their capes and organized the 24th Annual Superhero Party at the Salah Pediatric Oncology Hospital at Broward Health Medical Center for pediatric cancer patients.
Young heroes decorated the auditorium with superhero-themed ornaments and lights the night before the event. The students had a blast interacting with the pediatric cancer patients while playing games and creating crafts.
The main goal of the event was to help the children write their wish lists for Santa! For each list, American Heritage Schools Pre-Medical Program students plan to raise funds to make those wishes come true and celebrate with the children at their holiday party taking place on Dec. 8, at 12 p.m., at the Broward Health Medical Center Heliport.
The hospital staff, along with Mina Amini, Regional Director of Physician Services, supported the students in their mission to brighten the lives of young superheroes battling cancer at the Salah Pediatric Oncology Unit. The Salah Foundation Children’s Hospital at Broward Health Medical Center is a vital resource for comprehensive pediatric hematology-oncology care in South Florida, committed to research and compassionate patient support.

Tamryn’s Story:
At age 6 Tamryn Lee was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a type of bone cancer, and began to receive treatment at TGH Children’s Hospital. Over the past 10 months, Tamryn has braved 29 weeks in the hospital to receive high-dose chemotherapy to help treat her condition. During these many treatments, Tamryn and her family truly became a part of the TGH family.
“The pediatric hematology/oncology providers, 5E (pediatric) nurses, and staff all treated us like family and have gone above and beyond in taking care of Tam during her most vulnerable moments,” said Ashanda Lee, Tamryn’s mom, who has been a Tampa General nurse for 15 years. Tamryn’s grandmother Yvonne Johnson, now retired, also dedicated 37 years of nursing to the academic health system.

The Leapfrog Group Announces Fall 2023 Hospital Safety Grades
November 6, 2023 — The Leapfrog Group released its Fall 2023 Hospital Safety Grades, awarding HealthPark Medical Center, Cape Coral Hospital, Gulf Coast Medical Center and Lee Memorial Hospital an “A” grade, which is the highest honor that can be received. This marks the 12th straight reporting period that all Lee Health Hospitals have received a grade of a “B” or higher.
HealthPark Medical Center earned an “A” grade for the 10th straight reporting period, and Gulf Coast Medical Center earned an “A” for the fourth straight reporting period and sixth since 2013. Lee Memorial Hospital and Cape Coral Hospital maintained their “A” grade for the third reporting period in a row.

WHAT PRESIDENT BIDEN’S EXECUTIVE ORDER ON AI MEANS FOR HEALTHCARE

This requirement extends to systems with implications for national security and economic stability.
In the healthcare sector, the Department of Health and Human Services will implement a safety program aimed at mitigating potential harm or unsafe practices linked to AI. The order also encompasses measures to increase funding for AI research in healthcare and the formulation of a strategic blueprint for the responsible deployment of AI. Additionally, it addresses important issues like fortifying privacy protections, enforcing thorough safety assessments, and implementing measures to deter the improper use of AI.

LEADINGAGE FLORIDA URGES CMS TO RECONSIDER PROPOSED STAFFING STANDARDS
November 7, 2023 – LeadingAge Florida, the state’s only association representing the entire continuum of care for older adults, announced today it submitted comments to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) strongly urging them to reconsider and refrain from implementing the proposed minimum staffing standards for nursing homes.

THE FLORIDA CENTER FOR NURSING RELEASES SUPPLEMENT REPORT ON NURSING WORKFORCE
Tampa, Fla. – November 7, 2023 – The Florida Center for Nursing published a supplement to “The State of the Nursing Workforce in Florida” which takes a deeper dive into the supply data. “Florida’s Nursing Workforce Supply by County” provides a summary of the supply of nurses for each county in Florida.
Nursing workforce characteristics at the county level are compared to the state and national workforce characteristics. Additionally, the county level nursing demographic characteristics are compared to state and national population characteristics per the U.S. Census Bureau. This report sheds new light on the extent to which the demography of the nursing workforce matches the communities they serve.

PREVIOUS GENETIC ASSOCIATION STUDIES INVOLVING PEOPLE WITH EUROPEAN ANCESTRY MAY BE INACCURATE
NIH study finds that failing to account for mixed genetic lineages could lead to inaccuracies.
November 7, 2023 – Researchers have found that previous studies analyzing the genomes of people with European ancestry may have reported inaccurate results by not fully accounting for population structure. By considering mixed genetic lineages, researchers at the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI), part of the National Institutes of Health, demonstrated that previously inferred links between a genomic variant that helps digest lactose and traits such as a person’s height and cholesterol level may not be valid.

PET SCANS MAY PREDICT PARKINSON’S DISEASE AND LEWY BODY DEMENTIA IN AT-RISK INDIVIDUALS
A biomarker of norepinephrine deficiency in the heart may help to detect Lewy body diseases before symptoms appear.
NOVEMBER 7. 2023 – In a small study, researchers at the National Institutes of Health have found that positron emission tomography (PET) scans of the heart may identify people who will go on to develop Parkinson’s disease or Lewy body dementia among those at-risk for these diseases. The findings, published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation and led by scientists at the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), part of NIH, may advance efforts to detect the earliest changes that years later lead to Parkinson’s disease and Lewy body dementia.

RESEARCHERS IDENTIFY BRAIN NETWORK THAT IS UNIQUELY ACTIVATED THROUGH INJECTION VS. ORAL DRUG USE
NIH study suggests the brain’s “salience network” is important for understanding substance use disorder, could be a future therapeutic target.
November 7, 2023 – Results from a new clinical trial(link is external) suggest that a group of brain regions known as the “salience network” is activated after a drug is taken intravenously, but not when that same drug is taken orally. When drugs enter the brain quickly, such as through injection or smoking, they are more addictive than when they enter the brain more slowly, such as when they are taken orally. However, the brain circuits underlying these differences are not well understood. This study offers new information that helps explain what may be causing this difference.

Currently Vice President/CFO of Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, Urquia provides executive oversight over all revenue cycle functions of the hospital, which include Patient Access, Health Information Management, Billing and Collections. TRULIEVE ANNOUNCES NOTICE OF REDEMPTION FOR ALL US$130 MILLION OF ITS 9.75% SENIOR SECURED NOTES DUE 2024
TALLAHASSEE, Fla., November 8, 2023 — Trulieve Cannabis Corp. (CSE: TRUL) (OTCQX: TCNNF) (“Trulieve” or “the Company”), a leading and top-performing cannabis company in the U.S., today announced it has issued a notice of redemption for all of its outstanding 9.75% senior secured notes due 2024 (CUSIP: 89788CAB0 / ISIN: CA89788CAB06) (the “Notes”). The aggregate principal amount of the Notes currently outstanding is US$130,000,000. As set forth in the notice of redemption, the redemption date will be December 1, 2023 (“the Redemption Date”), and the redemption price is 100% of the principal redeemed, plus accrued and unpaid interest up to, but excluding, the Redemption Date. The Notes trade on the Canadian Securities Exchange under the symbol “TRUL.DB.U”. In conjunction with the redemption, the Notes will be delisted from the Canadian Securities Exchange.
On November 8, 2023, a copy of the notice of redemption was issued to record holders. Payment of the redemption price and surrender of the Notes for redemption will be as of December 1, 2023 and will be made through the facilities of Odyssey Trust Co. in accordance with the applicable procedures of the trust indenture governing the Notes and Odyssey Trust Co.
