Peripheral artery disease: Leg pain, leg cramps, lingering foot wounds among symptoms
September 25, 2024 — Leg pain and leg cramps aren’t always an orthopedic issue: Both can be signs of peripheral artery disease, or PAD, a serious blood-flow issue with implications for the heart. In this expert alert, Young Erben, M.D., a vascular surgeon at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida, explains how the most common form, PAD that affects the legs and feet, is treated. Options include a surgical technique from the past that Mayo surgeons are reviving and refining to offer new hope to patients with advanced PAD.
In peripheral artery disease, narrowed arteries reduce blood flow to the affected limbs. They do not get enough blood flow to keep up with the demand. It is important to manage PAD as early as possible, Dr. Erben says. In the worst cases, PAD can progress to open sores that do not heal, causing tissue death and limb loss.

Florida Blue NCH Media Update – September 24
SEPTEMBER 24, 2024 –
Quote from Phillip Lee, Florida Blue’s West Florida Market President:
“Florida Blue will continue working to reach an agreement with NCH before the Sept.30 deadline. We value their doctors, nurses and medical personnel, and want NCH to remain in our network. However, if NCH leadership choose to exit our network, we are ready to support our members with finding other high-quality, in-network providers in the region.”
Latest Updates:
Despite what members and the community may be hearing, negotiations do continue. Florida Blue’s current contract with Naples Comprehensive Health expires in 6 days (Sept. 30, 2024). NCH is continuing to stand firm on its latest proposal, which still adds up to a 30% increase in rates over the next several years. We have offered NCH fair and reasonable rates that exceed medical inflation. NCH has continued to reject this offer.
NCH refuses to consider an agreement that would tie any portion of their revenue to improvements in efficiency or patient outcomes. Florida Blue has similar arrangements with many other top health systems across the state.

Healthcare Network provides Florida Blue in-network primary care services
Appointments are available for patients impacted by the NCH stalemate with Blue Cross/Blue Shield insurance negotiations
Naples, Fla. – Sept. 24, 2024 – Healthcare Network is in-network for Blue Cross/Blue Shield’s Florida Blue insurance plan, offering an option for care to residents who may be impacted by stalled negotiations between the insurer and NCH over insurance reimbursements. The lack of an agreement between NCH and the insurer by the end of September could cause patients to pay higher out-of-network prices for NCH services.
“We’re concerned about the well-being of the community and want to make sure everyone is informed that there are places they can go for care,” said Jamie Ulmer, CEO of Healthcare Network. “Since 1977, we have worked to support the community’s primary care needs, striving for a community where every person has access to appropriate health care.”

WIRELESS CALLS TO 988 TO GET A MORE LOCALIZED RESPONSE WITH GEOROUTING
FCC to Vote Next Month on a Final Rule to Require All U.S. Wireless Carriers to Implement Georouting
WASHINGTON, September 25, 2024—Today, the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline announced that the process to start routing cellular phone calls to 988 contact centers based on the caller’s approximate location, versus by area code – known as “georouting” – began last week with two major U.S. wireless carriers that combined make up about half of all wireless calls to 988. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and the 988 Network Administrator, Vibrant Emotional Health, have been working with all of the major U.S. cell phone carriers for more than a year to improve call routing to 988 so that callers on a cell phone can be connected more locally to centers that are better equipped to provide nearby resources and services. Building on this latest development, Federal Communications Commission Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel today announced that the FCC, which established 988 as the three-digit dialing code for the Lifeline in 2020, will vote on final rules to codify georouting at its Oct. 17 Open Meeting.

Higher doses of buprenorphine may improve treatment outcomes for people with opioid use disorder
NIH-funded analysis suggests higher doses of buprenorphine were associated with lower rates of future behavioral health-related emergency department and inpatient care.
September 25, 2024 – Adults with opioid use disorder who receive a higher daily dose of the opioid addiction treatment medication buprenorphine may have a lower risk of subsequent emergency department visits or use of inpatient services related to behavioral health (such as for mental health and substance use disorders) than adults receiving the recommended dose, according to an analysis funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). These findings suggest that higher buprenorphine doses could be more effective in managing opioid use disorder, which may be particularly relevant for improving treatment for those who use fentanyl, a major driver of the overdose crisis.
